Hide Your Wallet

May’s New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • Beach Read

    Beach Read by Emily Henry

    Author: Emily Henry
Released: May 19, 2020 by Berkley
    Genre: ,

A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

    They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they’re living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer’s block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

Amanda: One of my fellow booksellers practically shoved this into my face and told me to read it. I did. She was right. It’s great.

Catherine: I loved this SO MUCH. A romance writer and a writer of literary fiction dare each other to try to write a book in each other’s genres, and it is DELIGHTFUL and funny and clever and just about perfect and did I mention it was hilarious?

    Genre: ,
    Series: Consortium Rebellion #3

As the youngest member of her High House, Catarina von Hasenberg is used to being underestimated, but her youth and flighty, bubbly personality mask a clever mind and stubborn determination. Her enemies, blind to her true strength, do not suspect that Cat is a spy—which makes her the perfect candidate to go undercover at a rival House’s summer retreat to gather intelligence on their recent treachery.

Cat’s overprotective older sister reluctantly agrees, but on one condition: Cat cannot go alone. Alexander Sterling, a quiet, gorgeous bodyguard, will accompany her, posing as her lover. After Cat tries, and fails, to ditch Alex, she grudgingly agrees, confident in her ability to manage him. After all, she’s never found a person she can’t manipulate.

But Alex proves more difficult—and more desirable—than Cat anticipated. When she’s attacked and nearly killed, she and Alex are forced to work together to figure out how deep the treason goes. With rumors of widespread assaults on Serenity raging, communications down, and the rest of her family trapped off-planet, Catarina must persuade Alex to return to Earth to expose the truth and finish this deadly battle once and for all.

  • Dirty Charmer

    Dirty Charmer by Emma Chase

    Author: Emma Chase
Released: May 19, 2020 by Emma Chase, LLC
    Genre: ,

Abigail Haddock is stunning, sensible, and some would say . . . stuffy. But it’s not really her fault. She was raised in one of Wessco’s oldest, most affluent, aristocratic families—“stuffy” is their middle name. So is successful. Abby’s working overtime to distinguish herself as a top-notch physician, just as her family legacy demands.

She doesn’t have time for nonsense.

    Tommy Sullivan’s all about nonsense.

Sure, he’s an elite bodyguard with lethal skills and co-owner of the renowned, S&S Securities Firm—protector of the wealthy and titled. But he’s also rowdy, fun and thoroughly irresistible.

Tommy knows how to have a good time, and he’s never seen someone more in need of a good time than Abby. The lass needs long, wet, filthy kisses—STAT—and he’s just the man for the job.

It doesn’t take long for a wildly sexy, sinfully satisfying, no-strings attached arrangement to turn into something more. Something sweet and addictive and real. But Tommy and Abby are too royally stubborn to admit it.

Opposites attract, everyone knows that. But can they last—can they love…for forever?

Amanda: Chase is always a good time when you want something hot and also fluffy.

  • No, You Shut Up

No, You Shut Up by Symone Sanders

    Author: Symone Sanders
Released: May 19, 2020 by Harper
    Genre:

In this rousing call to leadership, the self-described millennial spokesperson for the culture, CNN’s designated “woke AF” former commentator, and the youngest national press secretary in the history of the United States shares her take-no-prisoners approach to life, politics, and career success, and shows a new generation how to be loud and powerful in their own right.

Many people—most notably white older men—may try to stop Symone Sanders from speaking up and out. But Symone will NOT shut up. And neither should you. In this inspiring call-to-action, Symone tells stories from her own life of not-shutting-up alongside loud young revolutionaries who came before her to help you find your authentic voice and use it to your advantage; to fight ideological battles more effectively; and to resist those who try to silence you.

We are all gurus, masterminds, artists, entrepreneurs—we are the change agents we have been waiting for. IT IS US. And the time is RIGHT NOW. I know you’re wondering, “But HOW?” And we don’t have all the answers! Symone is the first to admit we’re all winging it in one way or another. But the point is we’re out there doing it. So get started. Open your mouth and start talking. Loudly.

No You Shut Up goes beyond the surplus of “Vote-Or-Die” books we’ve seen before. Because change doesn’t just happen at the ballot box. We need people fighting oppression, injustice, and inequality—in the workplace, on the cultural battlefield, in government, in every corner of the world. With spirited storytelling filtered through a voice that cannot and will not be ignored, Symone inspires you to start now. You don’t need to have all the answers, or wait your turn to help create the change you want to see. All you need is a new toolbox, an unshakeable commitment, and the confidence and guidance to wield those tools effectively.

Sneezy: A loud and proud Black woman sharing how to find and use our voices, and the ways we can affect change are things I’m absolutely here for. The next US election has boiled down to be between two sexual offenders, and from the blurb, it looks like this is the dose of hope I need.

His brothers want to tie off loose ends and close shop….

But the more time they spend together, the stronger the chemistry builds between them. • Reaping the Benefits

Reaping the Benefits by E.J. Noyes

    Author: E.J. Noyes
Released: May 19, 2020 by Bella Books
    Genre: , ,

Morgan Ashworth isn’t having a good day. The award for Minion of the Year is slipping out of reach, and she has to administer an afterlife package to one of her human employees. An employee she’s attracted to. An employee who’ll soon know Morgan isn’t quite what she seems.

Jane Smith was having a great day. Until her hot boss dropped a bombshell. It’s time for Jane to complete the questionnaire to decide where she’ll spend her afterlife. Oh, and her boss is immortal and also Death’s Head Minion. Yes, Death, as in the Grim Reaper.
Jane decides to bargain—if Morgan needs her to sign the afterlife document, she can use her unlimited resources to help Jane with her bucket list. Seems straightforward. Except for the matter of their mutual attraction, and the fact one of the items on Jane’s list is “Sleep with my boss.”

The more time Morgan and Jane spend together, the more they realize mutual attraction barely scratches the surface. But can Jane heal the broken heart Morgan has nursed for centuries? And will Morgan risk loving, then losing, another mortal woman when she knows it means an eternity of heartbreak?

Tara: The cover is kind of bananas, but the premise is quirky and has me interested.

    Author: Eloisa James
Released: May 19, 2020 by Avon
    Genre: ,
Series: The Wildes of Lindow Castle #5

A shy wallflower meets her dream man–or does she?–in the next book in New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James’ Wildes of Lindow series.

Miss Viola Astley is so painfully shy that she’s horrified by the mere idea of dancing with a stranger; her upcoming London debut feels like a nightmare.

So she’s overjoyed to meet handsome, quiet vicar with no interest in polite society — but just when she catches his attention, her reputation is compromised by a duke.

Devin Lucas Augustus Elstan, Duke of Wynter, will stop at nothing to marry Viola, including marrying a woman whom he believes to be in love with another man.

    A vicar, no less.

Devin knows he’s no saint, but he’s used to conquest, and he’s determined to win Viola’s heart.

Viola has already said Yes to his proposal, but now he wants her unruly heart…and he won’t accept No for an answer.

Catherine: This was such a lovely read, with two really decent, kind people at the heart of it, and a delightful comic subplot/secondary romance that dominated the second half of the book.

Ellen: I love this series for light, relaxing historical fluff!

  • The Girl Next Door

The Girl Next Door by Chelsea Cameron

    Author: Chelsea Cameron
Released: May 26, 2020 by Carina Adores
    Genre: , ,

New York Times bestselling author Chelsea M. Cameron is back with the opposites-attract, sweet-and-sexy small-town romance you’ve been waiting for.

Iris Turner hightailed it out of Salty Cove, Maine, without so much as a backward glance. Which is why finding herself back in her hometown—in her childhood bedroom, no less—has the normally upbeat Iris feeling a bit down and out. Her spirits get a much-needed lift, though, at the sight of the sexy girl next door.

No one knows why Jude Wicks is back in Salty Cove, and that’s just how she likes it. Jude never imagined she’d be once again living in her parents’ house, never mind hauling lobster like a local. But the solitude is just what she needs—until Iris tempts her to open up.

A no-strings summer fling seems like the perfect distraction for both women. Jude rides a motorcycle, kisses hard and gives Iris the perfect distraction from her tangled mess of a life. But come September, Iris is still determined to get out of this zero-stoplight town.

That is, unless Jude can give her a reason to stay…

Shana: I love a small town romance, especially when the heroine has to figure her shit out in her hometown…so what could be better than TWO heroines doing that together? The blurb also makes lobster fishing sounds sexy, which is just the distraction I need right now.

Sneezy: Cute, cozy romance, opposites attract, and there are also lobsters. Please, thank you, with a cherry on top.

Tara: The whole “summer fling” thing makes me think this going to be a breezy, fun book. Plus, Chelsea M. Cameron writes my very favourite comfort reads, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting this one.

  • Hideaway

    Hideaway by Nora Roberts

    Author: Nora Roberts
Released: May 26, 2020 by St. Martin's Press
    Genre: ,

A family ranch in Big Sur country and a legacy of Hollywood royalty set the stage for Nora Roberts’ emotional new suspense novel, Hideaway.

Caitlyn Sullivan had come from a long line of Hollywood royalty, stretching back to her Irish immigrant great-grandfather. At nine, she was already a star—yet still an innocent child who loved to play hide and seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared.

Some may have considered her a pampered princess, but Cate was in fact a smart, scrappy fighter, and she managed to escape her abductors. Dillon Cooper was shocked to find the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his house—but when the teenager and his family heard her story they provided refuge, reuniting her with her loved ones.

Cate’s ordeal, though, was far from over. First came the discovery of a shocking betrayal that would send someone she’d trusted to prison. Then there were years spent away in western Ireland, peaceful and protected but with restlessness growing in her soul.

Finally, she would return to Los Angeles, gathering the courage to act again and get past the trauma that had derailed her life. What she didn’t yet know was that two seeds had been planted that long-ago night—one of a great love, and one of a terrible vengeance…

Elyse: Nora Roberts is an auto buy for me.

He’s spent years reinventing himself and won’t let his past dictate his future.

But on his way to New Hope, Vince gets stuck in the middle of nowhere and his past might be the only thing that can get him to his future. Specifically Tack O’Leary, the gorgeous, easygoing farm boy who broke his heart and who picks Vince up in his dilapidated truck.

  • The Jane Austen Society

The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner

    Author: Natalie Jenner
Released: May 26, 2020 by St. Martin's Press
    Genre: ,

Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England’s finest novelists. Now it’s home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen’s legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen’s home and her legacy. These people—a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others—could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society.

A powerful and moving novel that explores the tragedies and triumphs of life, both large and small, and the universal humanity in us all, Natalie Jenner’s The Jane Austen Society is destined to resonate with readers for years to come.

Lara: The promise of Austen easter eggs hidden throughout the book makes me salivate!

  • Marry in Scarlet

Marry in Scarlet by Anne Gracie

    Author: Anne Gracie
Released: May 26, 2020 by Berkley
    Genre: ,
    Series: Marriage of Convenience #4

A marriage born of passion and scandal turns into something more from the bestselling author of Marry in Secret.

    When a duke denied…

The proud and arrogant Duke of Everingham is determined to secure a marriage of convenience with heiress Lady Georgiana Rutherford. He’s the biggest prize on the London marriage mart, pursued by young unmarried ladies and their match-making mamas, as well as married women with a wandering eye. He can have any woman he wants. Or so he thinks…

    …Hunts an independent lady…

Lady Georgiana Rutherford—irreverent and unconventional—has no plans to marry. Having grown up poor, Lady George has no intention of giving up her fortune to become dependent on the dubious and unreliable goodwill of a man. Especially a man as insufferable as the Duke of Everingham, whose kisses stirs unwelcome and unsettling emotions…

    …Sparks are sure to fly

The more she defies him, the more the duke wants her, until an argument at a ball spirals into a passionate embrace. Caught in a compromising position, the duke announces their betrothal. George is furious, and when gossip claims she deliberately entrapped the duke—when she was the one who was trapped—she marches down the aisle in a scarlet wedding dress. But the unlikely bride and groom may have found love in the most improbable of places—a marriage of convenience.

Catherine: Finally we get George’s book! This was a heap of fun, though I found the first half of the book hard to read. The hero undergoes an almost Darcy-like transformation, and is absolutely magnificent after that point, but it was stressful waiting for him to get there.

Elyse: Sonali Dev writing a homage to Austen? Put it in my eyeballs.

Catherine: OK, Jane Austen retelling with cooking? Let me at it!

  • Something to Talk About

Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner

    Author: Meryl Wilsner
Released: May 26, 2020 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,

A showrunner and her assistant give the world something to talk about when they accidentally fuel a ridiculous rumor in this debut romance.

Hollywood powerhouse Jo is photographed making her assistant Emma laugh on the red carpet, and just like that, the tabloids declare them a couple. The so-called scandal couldn’t come at a worse time—threatening Emma’s promotion and Jo’s new movie.

As the gossip spreads, it starts to affect all areas of their lives. Paparazzi are following them outside the office, coworkers are treating them differently, and a “source” is feeding information to the media. But their only comment is “no comment”.

With the launch of Jo’s film project fast approaching, the two women begin to spend even more time together, getting along famously. Emma seems to have a sixth sense for knowing what Jo needs. And Jo, known for being aloof and outwardly cold, opens up to Emma in a way neither of them expects. They begin to realize the rumor might not be so off base after all…but is acting on the spark between them worth fanning the gossip flames?

Shana: This sounds like a Hollywood plot after my own heart. I’ve been looking forward to reading this for what feels like years.

Sneezy: The whole world singing K-I-S-S-I-N-G, and Jo and Emma realize maybe everyone is on to something. *swoon*

Tara: When I heard about this one last year I immediately made grabby hands. F/F celebrity romances are my jam, so I am READY for this one!

  1. DonnaMarie says:

My may list was pretty slim pickings. Really just the new Nora Roberts, but now I’ll be adding a few. Thank goodness the GBPL opened the drive through otherwise I’d be looking at an epic pile of books in another month.

  2. Anna C says:

My preorder of Say Yes to the Duke arrived two weeks early, and I really enjoyed it. It was light, and fluffy, and exactly what I needed right now. Eloisa James is an auto-buy for me, and she generally doesn’t disappoint. I may be in the minority, but I also really enjoyed Say No to the Duke. Betsy was delightful.

The new releases from Sonali Dev & Nora Roberts were already on my hold list, but I’m definitely going to add Jackie Lau and Kennedy Ryan’s books.

Also can I just say how much I love the covers for Sonali Dev’s new series? They’re bright and fun without being too cartoonish.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Now that Ainsley Booth’s FILTHY LIAR (the fifth and final book in her Forbidden Bodyguards series) has been moved from May 19 to July 21, I have no new books left on my May calendar. This means I’ll have more money in my book budget for June’s new releases and for the rest of May I’ll be trying to catch up on my KU queue—where the books are lined up like planes waiting to take off.

  4. Frida says:

Leather and Lace by Rebel Carter is out next week. It’s an f/f novella in her Montana set historical series. I’ve been meaning to try her books for a while now and this seems like a good place to start!

  5. Julia says:

I normally enjoy Eloisa James but I have not been able to get through a single one of the Wildes books- although to be fair I didn’t even attempt book #4 because 1-3 were so lackluster.

  6. HeatherS says:

I’m basically signing up for all the Carina Adores books. My local indie bookstore will see me every month for sure.

  7. MaryK says:

Ashley Gardner’s Blood of a Gladiator comes out on 5/21. It’s the first in a mystery series. I’ve been waiting for it since I read the novella.

  8. Blackjack says:

I’m literally counting down the days until Emily Henry’s Beach Read is out. I can’t remember a time when I’ve been this excited for a new release. I’ve yet to see anything less than 5 stars from friends and reviewers.

I’ve never read Sonali Dev but have a strong sense I need to fix that. Recipe for Persuasion sounds charming and fun.

  9. Blackjack says:

@Julia – I’ve really enjoyed some of Eloisa James’s older novels but like you, I haven’t cared much for this most recent series and after the first two, I’ve not picked any more of them up.

  10. denise says:

Highly recommend The Jane Austen Society. Read the netgalley a few months ago.

  11. Crystal says:

I have Beach Read on preorder. It comes out on the same day as A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins, which I am fervently hoping is not trash, since I have that preordered too, but….Coriolanus Snow. Erm. I threw some orders on the new Emma Chase and Eloisa James, too, since either way, I’m going to need something joyful as a palate cleanser. Either Collins is about to rewrite the game (pun intended) or I’m going to read it and I swear if she tries to make that genocidal shithead a hero, something’s getting broken. I’ll pull a Dusty Springfield, buy some cheap glassware, and take it all out on it.

  12. KatiM says:

I added Beach Read and the Nora Roberts book to my library hold list. Numbers 48 and 180. Might be awhile before I see these so I might break down and buy them. Both seem like great summer reads.

  13. MirandaB says:

The Turning Tide by Catriona McPherson. I adore her Dandy Gilver mysteries!

  14. Carol S. says:

I really enjoyed Sonali Dev’s first 2 books, but A Change of Heart threw me off — very angsty and dark. I like the sound of her new series (although I’m a wee bit tired of the Jane Austen tropes).

  15. Maite says:

I pre-ordered the Jackie Lau solely because previous book, “Mr. Hotshot CEO” hit my feels in all the right ways. Sibling relationships, a millionaire that actually works for a living, well-meaning interferring elders, peoplewho make mistakes, acknowledge, and learn.
and what’s the most realistic and hopeful account of living with chronic depression.
(To the point I was honestly tempted to gift it to ex- boyfriend with a “It’s not the money, it’s how he LISTENS!”. )

So I do NOT expect to love this one, but it would have to be a really big disappointment for me not to preorder the next one as well.

  17. Terrierhead says:

@maite I was intrigued by your description of Mr. Hotshot CEO and found it on Kindle for free!
