  • John Eyre

    John Eyre by Mimi Matthews

John Eyre by Mimi Matthews is $1.99! Thanks to everyone who commented and let us know about this sale! This is a retelling of the Bronte classic and has similar elements of a Gothic historical romance. Have you read this one?

From USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews comes a supernatural Victorian gothic retelling of Charlotte Brontë’s timeless classic.

Yorkshire, 1843. When disgraced former schoolmaster John Eyre arrives at Thornfield Hall to take up a position as tutor to two peculiar young boys, he enters a world unlike any he’s ever known. Darkness abounds, punctuated by odd bumps in the night, strange creatures on the moor, and a sinister silver mist that never seems to dissipate. And at the center of it all, John’s new employer—a widow as alluring as she is mysterious.

Sixteen months earlier, heiress Bertha Mason embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Marriage wasn’t on her itinerary, but on meeting the enigmatic Edward Rochester, she’s powerless to resist his preternatural charm. In letters and journal entries, she records the story of their rapidly-disintegrating life together, and of her gradual realization that Mr. Rochester isn’t quite the man he appears to be. In fact, he may not be a man at all.

From a cliff-top fortress on the Black Sea coast to an isolated estate in rural England, John and Bertha contend with secrets, danger, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Can they help each other vanquish the demons of the past? Or are some evils simply too powerful to conquer?

  • Unwrapping Her Perfect Match

Unwrapping Her Perfect Match by Kat Latham

Unwrapping Her Perfect Match by Kat Latham is 99c! This is a holiday novella and it was also recommended in our Tall Heroines Rec League. The hero is a single father rugby player who’s always had a thing for the heroine. Readers definitely recommend this for a great Christmas read. However, others weren’t a fan of the hero until the very end.

’Twas a week before Christmas, and at the auction house…

At six foot one, Gwen Chambers has felt like a giant her whole life. She’s a calm, capable nurse saving lives in a busy London hospital, but healthy men give her heart palpitations. When larger-than-life rugby player “Little” John Sheldon convinces her to bid on him in his team’s fundraising auction, she discovers how pleasurable heart palpitations can be.

A rugby player was stirring, with desire no one could douse…

John has wanted Gwen since he first saw her, but when he’s injured in a match just before Christmas he suddenly needs her too. Not only can the sexy nurse help him recover, but she might be able to help him look after his daughter—a shy ten-year-old who speaks only French.

But will it be a Happy Christmas for all, and for all a good night?
From decorating the Christmas tree to ice skating at the Tower of London, Gwen helps father and daughter open up and bond with each other—and she bonds right along with them. But when John’s agent calls with a life-changing offer, Gwen has to decide how far she’s willing to go for her perfect match. Will their first Noël also be their last?

  • A Line in the Dark

A Line in the Dark by Malinda Lo

A Line in the Dark by Malinda Lo is $2.99! This is a queer young adult mystery with some horror elements. I know Malinda Lo’s books are usually a favorite around here, but this hasn’t been reviewed just yet.

Jess Wong is Angie Redmond’s best friend. And that’s the most important thing, even if Angie can’t see how Jess truly feels. Being the girl no one quite notices is OK with Jess anyway. If nobody notices her, she’s free to watch everyone else. But when Angie begins to fall for Margot Adams, a girl from the nearby boarding school, Jess can see it coming a mile away. Suddenly her powers of observation are more a curse than a gift.

As Angie drags Jess further into Margot’s circle, Jess discovers more than her friend’s growing crush. Secrets and cruelty lie just beneath the carefree surface of this world of wealth and privilege, and when they come out, Jess knows Angie won’t be able to handle the consequences.

When the inevitable darkness finally descends, Angie will need her best friend.

  1. Lara says:

I enjoyed John Eyre (almost any retellings or alternate Jane Eyres are a one-click purchase for me), but found that a lot of the tension in the story is removed by making Jane into a John. He is never concerned that he’ll be able to find a tutoring position–why would he be, he’s an educated male. The only reason he resists his attraction to Bertha Rochester is because he respects her too much; there are no societal repercussions for indulging in an affair like there would have been for Jane.

  2. WhimsicalCow says:

Although I agree that the gender swap in John Eyre lowers some of the stakes, it also improves the power dynamics of the primary relationship considerably. (Plus Bertha is a total badass, and I’m always here for a badass heroine.)

  3. SuasnH says:

I’m not usually a fan of retellings, but I enjoyed John Eyre. I noticed direct references to at least two other famous gothic novels. I’m curious if there were more that I missed. If you were Team Bertha in the original, you might appreciate this version.

  4. Bertha is a total badass! And the boys he’s responsible for are something else. (No spoilers!) I thoroughly enjoyed John Eyre.

  5. Jessi says:

I had a GREAT time reading John Eyre – Matthews does a terrific job capturing the mood, and you’ll recognize all the plot elements but they get a fresh twist. I listened to the audiobook on a solo road trip and had a blast.

  6. Vicki says:

I read Unwrapping Her Perfect Match a number of years ago and I recall enjoying it. Not totally excellent but did keep my interest and obviously I still remember it.

  7. Sara says:

Really like Kat Latham & the London Legends series. I remember this one being sweet, but because it’s a novella the plot is pretty compressed. I know she’s been busy with young kids and work, but will be excited when Latham comes out with a new book/series!
