The Undead, a Thriller, & More

  • Mating the Huntress

Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert

RECOMMEND: Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert is $2.99! That might be the regular price for this paranormal romance novella. Elyse loved this one and gave it an A:

Overall this book was a delight. It locked on to my need for female rage, for men to support that rage, and for cupcakes, and it was funny.

This Halloween, love bites back… hard.

Chastity Adofo knows a monster when she sees one. As soon as Luke Anthony wanders into her family’s coffee shop, she recognises the evil lurking beneath his charming smile and fantastic arse. The handsome werewolf is determined to have her—but she’s determined to cut out his heart.

Little does she know, Luke’s plans for her are far more pleasurable than murder. And when the full moon rises, all bets are off…

Warning: Mating the Huntress is 30,000+ words of red-hot, Halloween-themed romance. This novella contains one flirtatious, cursed creature of the night, one badass, knife-happy heroine, and forbidden lust at first sight. Please read responsibly!

  • Deadmen Walking

    Deadmen Walking by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Deadmen Walking by Sherrilyn Kenyon is $2.99! This is book one in I believe Kenyon’s newest series. I remember be slightly confused about the genre, since it didn’t seem like her typical paranormal romance. Anyone read this and care to give us a genre breakdown?

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon debuts a sweeping new epic saga sure to appeal to her millions of fans!

    Deadmen tell their tales . . .

To catch evil, it takes evil. Enter Devyl Bane– an ancient dark warlord returned to the human realm as one of the most notorious pirates in the New World. A man of many secrets, Bane makes a pact with Thorn– an immortal charged with securing the worst creations the ancient gods ever released into our world. Those powers have been imprisoned for eons behind enchanted gates . . . gates that are beginning to buckle. At Thorn’s behest, Bane takes command of a crew of Deadmen and, together, they are humanity’s last hope to restore the gates and return the damned to their hell realms.

But things are never so simple. And one of Bane’s biggest problems is the ship they sail upon. For the Sea Witch isn’t just a vessel, she’s also a woman born of an ancient people he wronged and who in turn wronged him during a centuries long war between their two races— a woman who is also sister to their primary target. Now Marcelina, the Sea Witch, must choose. Either she remains loyal to her evil sister and almost extinct race against Bane and his cause, and watches humanity fall, or she puts faith in an enemy who has already betrayed her. Her people over the totality of humanity— let’s hope Bane can sway her favor.

  • The Stillwater Girls

The Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent

The Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent is $1.99! Elyse gave this mystery/thriller a B, as it was a little less scary than she likes:

Basically if you want to be a little scared (because the premise is weird and spooky), but also know you’re safe reading about people who will be okay and nothing violent will happen, this book will work for you.

Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

  • Undead Girl Gang

Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson

Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson is $2.99! This is a paranormal young adult novel and we featured its new cover update on Cover Awe. The new one has a nice ode to the old one. I wonder if they shot both at the same time.

Mila Flores and her best friend Riley have always been inseparable. There’s not much excitement in their small town of Cross Creek, so Mila and Riley make their own fun, devoting most of their time to Riley’s favorite activity: amateur witchcraft.

So when Riley and two Fairmont Academy mean girls die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone’s explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders, but they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer…before the killer strikes again.

Presumably the issues Sherrilyn Kenyon had, have been solved.

  2. Courtney M says:

I also loved Mating the Huntress. Goodreads has it listed first in a series, and I am continually disappointed that it remains a stand-alone novella.

  3. footiepjs says:

I bought Mating the Huntress after it came up in the Sex Puppy Rec League post (Jul 18, 2019). While the sex puppy is not my favorite trope, I really liked this novella. I mean, it’s Talia Hibbert so that’s practically a given.

  4. Jess says:

What is the sex puppy trope?

  5. footiepjs says:

    As defined by Olivia Waite:

There’s a particular type of hero I’ve come to call the Sex Puppy: hot, cheerful, usually funny but not too bright, and absolutely here for the heroine’s pleasure and happiness, exactly as she wants it, no more, no less.

There’s more examples named in that Rec League.

  6. Kareni says:

@Jess, it’s defined in the post that @footiepjs mentioned above. Here is a link ~

  7. Jess says:

    @footiepjs & @Kareni

Thank you both! Would you say the sex puppy trope is different from a HIMBO?

  8. Courtney M says:

@Jess – IMO, they can overlap, but are not necessarily synonymous. First, the sex puppy can be intelligent; a lot sex puppy heroes have a great deal of emotional intelligence and charisma, but not necessarily book smarts. Some of my fave sex puppy heroes (like Colin in a Week to be Wicked or Drew in A Play of Passion from the post) appear “simple” to the heroine at first, but the more they’re around them, the more they realize that having good “people skills” is actually really useful and give the hero more credit. Second, a HIMBO is not necessarily there for the heroine or good at sex.

That said, if a HIMBO is showing up in a romance as a hero, I give good odds he’s a sex puppy.

I need to read Undead Girl Gang! It looks amazing!

The MEET ME UNDER THE MISTLETOE anthology is currently free in the Kindle Store. It’s part of the Midnight Dynasty series that features two powerful rival families—the Constantines and the Morellis—who love and hate each other in equal measure. The stories in the anthology are all connected in some way to a Christmas ball being hosted by the Morellis. Writers include:

O Holy Night by Pam Godwin

    Santa Baby by Claire Contreras

All I Want for Christmas Is You by M. Robinson

    Last Christmas by Katee Robert

Carol of the Bells by Maria Luis

    Silver Bells by Alta Hensley

O Come All Ye Faithful by Amelia Wilde

    Silent Night by Sienna Snow

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear by Jenika Snow

Wrapped in Red by Sam Mariano

Little Drummer Boy by M. O’Keefe

Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Giana Darling

Away in a Manger by Jade West

    This Christmas by Theodora Taylor

    Hallelujah by Skye Warren

I downloaded the book last week and have now read almost all the stories. The Contreras and the Luis are my favorites so far, but almost all of them are worth reading—and you can’t beat the price. (I should add that there are a number of books titled MEET ME UNDER THE MISTLETOE, so if you’re looking for this one, search for the title + M. Robinson.)

  11. GradStudentEscapist says:

Mating the Huntress is my favorite novella! And excellent for spooky season feels! Also, it’s hilarious, sweet, and sexy. Highly recommended.

  12. LisaM says:

@Courtney M, I remember Talia Hibbert said somewhere she would be writing more stories. I just don’t remember if I saw it on Twitter, or in her newsletter.

  13. SusanE says:

    Thanks, DDD!
For nook users, B&N has the free mistletoe anthology with the author listed as Skye Warren.

  14. Issa says:

Thanks SusanE. That helped me find it
