Hide Your Wallet

September 2021 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments. Let’s nerd out about language, especially when it comes to cults and brainwashing.

  • Our Favorite Songs

Our Favorite Songs by Anita Kelly

    Author: Anita Kelly
Released: September 1, 2021 by Tea & Karaoke
    Genre: , , ,
    Series: Moonlighters #2

Restless and disillusioned with his life, Aiden McCarstle is ready for a night out at The Moonlight Café with his best friend Penelope: one night to not think about how much he hates grad school, to watch queer people make fools of themselves singing karaoke. A simple, reliable escape.

But when it’s not Penelope who walks through the door at Moonie’s, but the high school nemesis Aiden hasn’t seen in five years—well, things get a little more complicated.

For Kai Andrews, moving back home after his mother’s death has been harder and lonelier than he anticipated. And running into McCarstle again? That had certainly never been in his plans. But he deserves a night out, away from the responsibilities and grief that have been weighing him down. Sure, it appears McCarstle still hates his guts, for reasons Kai has never quite understood. But maybe, with a decent dose of pop music and Moonie’s magic, Kai can finally, finally make Aiden smile. Just this once. Just for tonight.

As a surprising, intimate night at Moonie’s brings Aiden and Kai closer together, a winter storm moves in. And what was meant to be a simple night out turns into over 24 hours of being snowed in together. Through confessions, memories, and games of Boggle, Aiden and Kai have to figure out if this unexpected second chance at connection was merely a temporary interlude—or if they can each come out better on the other side of the storm.

Aarya: This holiday novella is fantastic and I am ridiculously excited for Kelly’s full-length debut next year. Content notes for grief (hero’s mom recently died of cancer).

As an African tightrope dancer in Victorian London, Iris is used to being strange. She is certainly a strange sight for leering British audiences always eager for the spectacle of colonial curiosity. But Iris also has a secret that even “strange” doesn’t capture…

    She cannot die.

Haunted by her unnatural power and with no memories of her past, Iris is obsessed with discovering who she is. But that mission gets more complicated when she meets the dark and alluring Adam Temple, a member of a mysterious order called the Enlightenment Committee. Adam seems to know much more about her than he lets on, and he shares with her a terrifying revelation: the world is ending, and the Committee will decide who lives…and who doesn’t.

Adam wants Iris to be his champion, and in return he promises her the one thing she wants most: the truth about who she really is.

  • The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova

    Author: Zoraida Córdova
Released: September 7, 2021 by Atria Books
    Genre:

The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations. They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low or empty, or why their matriarch won’t ever leave their home in Four Rivers—even for graduations, weddings, or baptism. But when Orquídea Divina invites them to her funeral and to come and collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives. Instead, Orquídea is transformed, leaving them with more questions than answers. Seven years later, her gifts have manifested in different ways for Marimar, Rey, and Tatinelly’s daughter, Rhiannon, granting them unexpected blessings. But soon, a hidden figure begins to tear through their family tree, picking them off one by one as it seeks to destroy Orquídea’s line. Determined to save what’s left of their family and uncover the truth behind their inheritance, the four descendants travel to Ecuador—to the place where Orquídea buried her secrets and broken promises and never looked backed.

Alternating between Orquídea’s past and her descendants’ present, The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina is an enchanting novel about what we knowingly and unknowingly inherit from our ancestors, the ties that bind, and reclaiming your power.

Aarya: I adore family-centered contemporary fantasies.

  • Saint

    Saint by Sierra Simone

    Author: Sierra Simone
    Released: September 7, 2021
    Genre: , , ,
    Series: Priest #3

    I can’t have Elijah Iverson.

I can’t have him because he’s my older brother’s best friend. I can’t have him because I broke his heart five years ago; because he’s now engaged to someone else—someone kind and dependable who deserves his whiskey eyes, his soft mouth, his fierce intellect.

I can’t have Elijah because I’ve chosen God instead.

The Bell brothers, though . . . well, we don’t exactly have the greatest track record with vows. But I’m determined to do this monk thing right—to pledge myself to a cloistered life and spend the rest of my years in chastity and prayer. But now Elijah’s here. He’s here and he’s coming with me on my European monastery road trip, and between the whispered confessions and the stolen kisses and the moments bent over an ancient altar, my vows are feeling flimsier by the day.

And vows or not, I know in my heart that it would take more than a good and holy monk to resist Elijah Iverson right now. It would take a saint.

And we all know that I’m no saint.

(This is the third full-length standalone in the Priest Collection, featuring Father Bell’s brother, Aiden Bell. You do not have to read Priest or Sinner to read Saint.)

Aarya: I know that the religious premise is a hard nope for many people (for good/understandable reasons). But if you enjoy the taboo, Sierra Simone is an expert at forbidden angst.

  • Witch Please

    Witch Please by Ann Aguirre

    Author: Ann Aguirre
Released: September 7, 2021 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Fix-It Witches #1

Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls in this adorable witchy rom-com with:

    • A bisexual virgin baker with a curse
    • A witch looking to avoid romantic entanglements
    • And a chemistry between them that causes literal sparks

Danica Waterhouse is a fully modern witch—daughter, granddaughter, cousin, and co-owner of the Fix-It Witches, a magical tech repair shop. After a messy breakup that included way too much family “feedback,” Danica made a pact with her cousin: they’ll keep their hearts protected and have fun, without involving any of the overly opinionated Waterhouse matriarchs. Danica is more than a little exhausted navigating a long-standing family feud where Gram thinks the only good mundane is a dead one and Danica’s mother weaves floral crowns for anyone who crosses her path.

Three blocks down from the Fix-It Witches, Titus Winnaker, owner of Sugar Daddy’s bakery, has family trouble of his own. After a tragic loss, all he’s got left is his sister, the bakery, and a lifetime of terrible luck in love. Sure, business is sweet, but he can’t seem to shake the romantic curse that’s left him past thirty and still a virgin. He’s decided he’s doomed to be forever alone.

Until he meets Danica Waterhouse. The sparks are instant, their attraction irresistible. For him, she’s the one. To her, he’s a firebomb thrown in the middle of a family war. Can a modern witch find love with an old-fashioned mundane who refuses to settle for anything less than forever?

Sarah: This is the first on my list of MaNY WitCH bOoKs this fall that I am excited about.

  • Peter Cabot Gets Lost

Peter Cabot Gets Lost by Cat Sebastian

    Author: Cat Sebastian
    Released: September 13, 2021
    Genre: , ,
    Series: The Cabots #2

    Summer 1960:

After years of scraping by, Caleb Murphy has graduated from college and is finally getting to start a new life. Except he suddenly has no way to get from Boston to Los Angeles. Then, to add to his misery, there’s perfect, privileged Peter Cabot offering to drive him. Caleb can’t refuse, even though the idea of spending a week in the car with a man whose luggage probably costs more than everything Caleb owns makes him want to scream.

Peter Cabot would do pretty much anything to skip out on his father’s presidential campaign, including driving across the country with a classmate who can’t stand him. After all, he’s had plenty of practice with people not liking him much—his own family, for example. The farther Peter gets from his family’s expectations, the more he starts to think about what he really wants, and the more certain he becomes that what he wants is more time with prickly, grumpy Caleb Murphy.

As they put more miles between themselves and their pasts, they both start to imagine a future where they can have things they never thought possible.

Aarya: I wish there were more 60s-set historicals. I really enjoyed the previous novella in the series (plus Aster Glenn Gray’s Honeytrap and Emma Barry/Gen Turner’s Fly Me to the Moon series).

    Susan’s pick!

  • Defy the Night

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer

    Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Released: September 14, 2021 by Bloomsbury YA
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Defy the Night #1

King Harristan rules Kandala with an iron fist. He’s had to ever since he and his brother Prince Corrick inherited a kingdom on the verge of collapse after a deadly illness killed most of the population before a cure was found. The one thing keeping his people alive is also driving them apart . . . the cure, made from the nectar of a rare flower. As sickness lingers among the people of Kandala, a sharp divide has formed, as those who control access to the medicine live in luxury–while the rest live in suffering. The only way to keep the peace is to kill anyone who threatens it, and that task falls to young Prince Corrick.

Tessa Cade is a masked outlaw marked for death, but she likes it that way. At night, she and her best friend Weston Lark ride through the streets of the poorest towns, distributing food, money, and medicine they’ve stolen from the elite ruling class. Tessa has reason to hate the king: her parents were publicly executed after they were caught selling medicine on the black market. She has reason to love Weston: he saved her life when she nearly followed her parents to the same fate. She’s come to hate the dawn, which signals that it’s time for Weston to return to his home on the other side of the city, where he spends his days working in the grueling iron forge.

Lately, rumors have been spreading that the cure no longer works, and people are starting to act on their worst impulses. Tessa knows that the only way to save her people–the poor–is to assassinate King Harristan. It’s a mission that is more likely to kill her than save anyone, but if her parents were willing to risk their lives, then so is she. What Tessa doesn’t expect to find is that everything she believed about her kingdom is a lie, and that tipping the balance of power will require her to work with the very people she intended to destroy. . .

Set in a fantasy world startlingly similar to our own, Brigid Kemmerer’s newest series illuminates the divide between those with power and those without. . . and what happens when someone is brave enough to flip the system upside down.

Amanda: I have so many friends pumped for this book and I think I’ll check it out based on their excitement alone.

  • With You Forever

With You Forever by Chloe Liese

    Author: Chloe Liese
    Released: September 14, 2021
    Genre: ,
    Series: Bergman Brothers #4

Cozy up for a heartfelt, humorous, sizzling slow-burn in this marriage of convenience romance about finding love—and home—in the most unlikely of places.

    Axel

Rooney Sullivan is sunshine incarnate. Warm, bright, always smiling, she’s everything I’m not and the last person I have any business desiring. Desperate to hide a hopeless attraction, I’ve done everything possible to keep my distance…until a charades game gone wrong brought that to a grinding halt.

Since then, steering clear of Rooney has been impossible. In a matter of months, she’s kissed me speechless, commandeered my art career, and infiltrated not only my dreams but my home. The woman who was once avoidable has become the last thing I needed: temptingly within reach.

    Rooney

Axel Bergman is a gorgeous grump who doesn’t have the time of day for me. Thankfully, I’ve kept my crush under wraps…well, until I kissed him. Charades got away from me, okay? It was an accident! I haven’t seen him since, which is for the best. My life is a mess, and the last thing I need is to embarrass myself further with the man who avoids me like that’s his job rather than painting modern masterpieces.

It seems the universe, however, has a different plan. When Axel and I unexpectedly find our paths—and problems—converging, a marriage of convenience proves the perfect solution. At least, until I’m facing my most serious problem yet: a once-loveless marriage of convenience that’s inconveniently become a love match, after all.

With You Forever is a sunshine and grump, marriage of convenience romance about a shy artist on the autism spectrum*, and a smiley smartypants who has a chronic IBD. Complete with combustible cooking lessons, interfering family and friends, and a steamy slow burn, this standalone is the fourth in a series of novels about a Swedish-American family of five brothers, two sisters, and their wild adventures as they each find happily ever after.

*This is an #OwnVoices story for its portrayal of autism by an autistic author.

Aarya: I have it on good authority from blogger friends that this is an excellent grumpy-sunshine romance.

A little thing like a Category 5 hurricane and spotty internet access can’t keep me from books! A couple of disappointments for September: Katee Robert cancelled the release of COHEN, the third of her Sabine Valley series, which had been scheduled for September 13. Also, Taylor Fitzpatrick’s AND THEN, the long-awaited second book of her Between the Teeth m/m hockey trilogy, is another September no-show. I do have hopes that Kati Wilde’s shifter romance, SHERIFF’S BAD BEAR, which was cancelled for August release, will show up in September. Only time will tell. As for books that are scheduled for September:

September 1 brings its usual Harlequin Presents ebook bounty: Caitlin Crews’s THE SICILIAN’S FORGOTTEN WIFE includes a revenge-marriage and amnesia. Meanwhile, Jackie Ashenden’s THE WEDDING NIGHT THEY NEVER HAD features a king demanding a divorce from a long-ago, never-consummated marriage. His wife refuses. Sparks fly.

Sierra Simone’s SAINT arrives September 7. The hero is the brother of the heroes from PRIEST and SINNER. This is an m/m romance and, as always with this series, I’m expecting lots of spiritual angst and smoking-hot sexy-times.

    J. Kenner’s RAVAGED WITH YOU, the seventh book in her Stark Security series of romantic-suspense stories, also drops September 7. This book features one of my favorite tropes: a man falling for his late best friend’s widow. H&h discover dead friend/husband was not such a good guy and had some very unsavory associates.

Skye Warren’s BEST KEPT SECRET, the third and final book in her Rochester Trilogy, a modern retelling of Jane Eyre, arrives September 14. Jane came face-to-face with the “Bertha Mason” character at the end of the second book. How will the story be resolved?

Also dropping September 14 is Amelia Wilde’s NET WORTH. This appears to be a standalone featuring a “revenge relationship,” but I won’t be surprised if it ends on a cliffhanger.

The publication date for Ella James’s dark m/m stepbrother romance, WRATH, has been changed yet again—now it’s scheduled for September 17. I’m not holding my breath.

Zoe York’s WILD AT HEART, the third in her new Kinkaids of Pine Harbour series, arrives September 28. This features antagonists-to-lovers with a road trip thrown in. Cue the trope-gasm!

Natasha Knight’s dark mafia romance, STOLEN, arrives September 30. The hero was a secondary character in Knight’s WITH THIS RING/I THEE TAKE duet.

  4. KatiM says:

It feels like I’ve had the Love Hypothesis on pre-order forever. I bought strictly for the Reylo cover.

  5. LJO says:

I absolutely cannot wait for Forever with You. That it’s releasing during my week at the beach makes it even better…..

  6. Carol S. says:

There’s a new badger book but maybe that got covered in August part 2 and I forgot?

Also a new Louise Penny with Gamache just came out plus a thriller by Lisa Jewell.

  7. Kareni says:

Glad to see you here, @DDD!

  8. KitBee says:

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS is already on hold at my library! I’m also excited for Evie Dunmore’s PORTRAIT OF A SCOTSMAN, which comes out September 7 in the US.

  9. Taylor says:

The Love Hypothesis lost me with the PhD student/prof pairing. That’s a hard no.

  10. Gillian B says:

I hear you on that, Taylor, although he’s not *her* prof. Hey, if we all liked the same thing, how boring life would be!

  11. Maureen says:

@DDD-very happy to see you post a comment! Too bad about Kati Wilde’s Sheriff’s Bad Bear, I was looking forward to that.

@Carol S-if you are talking about the new Laurenston-Breaking Badger-it came out Tuesday and I thought it was fabulous!!

I’m excited for the Bergman Brother book release, I read the other ones and pre-ordered the coming one back in July.

  12. Steffi says:

How did I miss Cat Sebastian has a new book out this month? And how did I miss part one of the series?

  13. Bunnifur says:

Rosalind James just released her latest in her Escape to New Zealand series, Just One Look, on September 1st. American neurosurgeon meets Kiwi rugby player. I had it pre-ordered for months, so I’m ready to dive in, as soon as I finish my library books!

  14. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I just discovered that Serena Bell’s WALK ON THE WILDER SIDE, which had been scheduled for November, drops September 23. This is the second book in a series about a family who run an outdoor adventures/destination wedding business. This one has the best friend’s little sister trope, which is not my favorite, but Serena can write anything and I’ll read it!

  15. Carol S. says:

@Maureen when I hear badger, I think Shelly L., anytime, anywhere!

  16. Midge says:

Can’t wait for the Cat Sebastian – loved the novella that introduces this new series.

@Steffi – I stumbled across the novella (Tommy Cabot Was Here) only by accident when it came out. It was just there on Amazon, and then I saw that the other one could be preordered. I just saw on CS’s website that the novella was originally part of an anthology, I guess that’s why it flew under the radar. Definitely worth the read, even if it’s only a novella!

  17. flchen1 says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, Serena Bell’s book is indeed absolutely fabulous. I agree that anything she writes is well worth reading!

  18. […] & Noble, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, and The Millions. For all you genre fans, we’ve got romance (and more) from SBTB, sci fi and fantasy from io9 and Bookmarks, and of course, crime reads from […]

  19. Ooh, Two Winters sounds good! I’m intrigued by a Winter’s Tale retelling. Witch Please is also on my TBR list.

I am very excited for Stephanie Burgis’s Scales and Sensibility (Goodreads; due out in early October.) Pet dragons and Regency-era fantasy are definitely my catnip! And the cover is absolutely gorgeous.

  20. Lisa F says:

One of those rare “I basically have everything on my TBR” pile half-months. Reading “The Love Hypothesis” Tuesday.
