  • J.R. Ward fans are probably anticipating the release of The Savior ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).

Which books are you ready to read this April?

  • Descendant of the Crane

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He

    Author: Joan He
Released: April 9, 2019 by AW Teen
    Genre: ,

Tyrants cut out hearts. Rulers sacrifice their own. Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, but when her beloved father is murdered, she’s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of an unstable kingdom. Determined to find her father’s killer, Hesina does something desperate: she engages the aid of a soothsayer—a treasonous act, punishable by death… because in Yan, magic was outlawed centuries ago.

Using the information illicitly provided by the sooth, and uncertain if she can trust even her family, Hesina turns to Akira—a brilliant and alluring investigator who’s also a convicted criminal with secrets of his own. With the future of her kingdom at stake, can Hesina find justice for her father? Or will the cost be too high?

In this shimmering Chinese-inspired fantasy, debut author Joan He introduces a determined and vulnerable young heroine struggling to do right in a world brimming with deception.

Amanda says: The author says she likes to design a story to maximize character pain and that’s the kind of masochism I’m here for.

  • The Luminous Dead

The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling

    Author: Caitlin Starling
Released: April 2, 2019 by Harper Voyager
    Genre: ,

A thrilling, atmospheric debut with the intensive drive of The Martian and Gravity and the creeping dread of Annihilation, in which a caver on a foreign planet finds herself on a terrifying psychological and emotional journey for survival.

When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits, and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck—enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother—meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane.

    Instead, she got Em.

Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition. Em knows all about Gyre’s falsified credentials, and has no qualms using them as a leash—and a lash. And Em has secrets, too . . .

As Gyre descends, little inconsistencies—missing supplies, unexpected changes in the route, and, worst of all, shifts in Em’s motivations—drive her out of her depths. Lost and disoriented, Gyre finds her sense of control giving way to paranoia and anger. On her own in this mysterious, deadly place, surrounded by darkness and the unknown, Gyre must overcome more than just the dangerous terrain and the Tunneler which calls underground its home if she wants to make it out alive—she must confront the ghosts in her own head.

But how come she can’t shake the feeling she’s being followed?

Amanda says: Creepy, scary space stuff!

  • The Five

    The Five by Hallie Rubenhold

    Author: Hallie Rubenhold
Released: April 9, 2019 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
    Genre:

Miscast in the media for nearly 130 years, the victims of Jack the Ripper finally get their full stories told in this eye-opening and chilling reminder that life for middle-class women in Victorian London could be full of social pitfalls and peril.

The “canonical five” women murdered by Jack the Ripper have always been dismissed as society’s waste, their stories passed down to us wrapped in a package of Victorian assumptions and prejudice. But social historian Hallie Rubenhold sets the record straight in The Five. In reality, only two of the victims were prostitutes, and Rubenhold has uncovered entirely new research about them all–in some cases, material no one has ever seen before.

The Five tells for the first time the true stories of these fascinating women. It delves into the Victorian experience of poverty, homelessness, and alcoholism, but also motherhood, childbirth, sexuality, child-rearing, work, and marriage, all against the fascinating, dark, and quickly changing backdrop of nineteenth-century London. From rural Sweden to the wedding of Queen Victoria, from the London of Charles Dickens to the factories of the Industrial Revolution and the high-class brothels of the West End, these women were not just victims but witnesses to the vagaries and vicissitudes of the Victorian age.

Elyse says: This book focuses on Jack the Ripper’s victims rather than the killer.

  • Fumbled

    Fumbled by Alexa Martin

    Author: Alexa Martin
Released: April 23, 2019 by Berkley
    Genre: ,
    Series: Playbook #2

A second chance doesn’t guarantee a touchdown in this new contemporary romance from the author of Intercepted.

Single-mother Poppy Patterson moved across the country when she was sixteen and pregnant to find a new normal. After years of hard work, she’s built a life she loves. It may include a job at a nightclub, weekend soccer games, and more stretch marks than she anticipated, but it’s all hers, and nobody can take that away. Well, except for one person.

TK Moore, the starting wide receiver for the Denver Mustangs, dreamt his entire life about being in the NFL. His world is football, parties, and women. Maybe at one point he thought his future would play out with his high school sweetheart by his side, but Poppy is long gone and he’s moved on.

When Poppy and TK cross paths in the most unlikely of places, emotions they’ve suppressed for years come rushing back. But with all the secrets they never told each other lying between them, they’ll need more than a dating playbook to help them navigate their relationship.

Sarah says: While I struggle with football-centered romances – and football generally – I loved Martin’s voice and narration style in the first book, and I have heard the second is really, really fun.

  • The Austen Playbook

The Austen Playbook by Lucy Parker

    Author: Lucy Parker
Released: April 22, 2019 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: London Celebrities #4

In which experienced West End actress Freddy Carlton takes on an Austen-inspired play, a scandal at a country estate, an enthusiastic search for a passion outside of acting…and the (some people might say icy*) heart of London’s most feared theater critic.

*if those people were being nice

Freddy Carlton knows she should be focusing on her lines for The Austen Playbook, a live-action TV event where viewers choose the outcome of each scene, but her concentration’s been blown. The palatial estate housing the endeavor is now run by the rude (brilliant) critic who’s consistently slammed her performances of late. James “Griff” Ford-Griffin has a penchant for sarcasm, a majestic nose and all the sensitivity of a sledgehammer.

She can’t take her eyes off him.

Griff can hardly focus with a contagious joy fairy flitting about near him, especially when Freddy looks at him like that. His only concern right now should be on shutting down his younger brother’s well-intentioned (disastrous) schemes—or at the very least on the production (not this one) that might save his family home from the banks.

Instead all he can think of is soft skin and vibrant curls.

As he’s reluctantly dragged into her quest to rediscover her passion for the stage and Freddy is drawn into his research on a legendary theater star, the adage about appearances being deceiving proves abundantly true. It’s the unlikely start of something enormous…but a single revelation about the past could derail it all.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise : all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

Sarah says: Like I’m not going to read this. And the rest of the books in the series. Six times in the next four months. I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS BOOK IT’S FREDDIE AND THERE’S AUSTEN AND I AM ALL OVER THIS.

    Elyse says: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Everyone says Lauren Tranter is exhausted, that she needs rest. And they’re right; with newborn twins, Morgan and Riley, she’s never been more tired in her life. Everyone, from her doctor to her husband, thinks she’s imagining things.

A month passes. And one bright summer morning, the babies disappear from Lauren’s side in a park. But when they’re found, something is different about them. The infants look like Morgan and Riley—to everyone else. But to Lauren, something is off. As everyone around her celebrates their return, Lauren begins to scream, These are not my babies.

Determined to bring her true infant sons home, Lauren will risk the unthinkable. But if she’s wrong about what she saw…she’ll be making the biggest mistake of her life.

  2. Ren Benton says:

Already had the Sharma on my list, but I hadn’t heard about THE DESCENT IN SPACE. *clickety*

I’m interested in a ton of stuff coming out in May, but April is pretty quiet on the new-release front for me.

  3. ms bookjunkie says:

I’m eagerly anticipating Ann Aguirre’s THE SHADOW WARRIOR on April 26… (and yes, I did just check that my preorder was fer reals and not just planned…)

  4. GraceElizabeth says:

SO excited for The Austen Playbook. The fourth Beatrice Hyde-Clare mystery is out on 5th April, which follows on from the apparent HEA at the end of the third book, so I’m really looking forward to that.

  5. Deianira says:

“Getting Hot with the Scot” = one-clicked to preorder! Modern Scots are one of my insta-buys, so thanks for that. Looks like book 2 is also available for preorder, & it’s an English hero. One assumes the series will continue with Northern Irish & (please, oh please, they never get any attention) Welsh stories?

Already have “The Austen Playbook”, “Prince on Paper” & “When We Left Cuba” on preorder. Damn you, auto-buy authors!

  6. Lynnd says:

I am looking forward to the next Sebastian St. Cyr novel , Who Slays the Wicked, by C S, Harris. It releases April 2nd.

  7. LauraL says:

I have Anything But a Duke on my “Dukes to Be Read” list, but didn’t have anything else until KateB mentioned the new Cat Sebastian book. Thanks for the tip!

  8. JenM says:

You reminded me to pre-order The Austen Playbook! I also can’t wait for American Witch, the newest PNR by Thea Harrison. She always writes strong, smart heroines who are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. This one features a woman in her mid-30’s whose witch powers are suddenly blossoming just as she discovers her husband cheating on her. That’s all kinds of catnip for me.

  9. MaryK says:

American Witch is already available on the author’s website.

    https://theaharrison.com/product/american-witch/

  10. JenM says:

@MaryK – Do you know if the book is actually available, or is that just a pre-order? It says “pre-sale” so I assumed it was a pre-order. I’d be a happy purchaser if I could get my hands on it now instead of having to wait until the end of the month.

  11. Julia says:

I cannot recommend ‘The Five’ highly enough. The research that went into the book is extraordinary.

  12. MaryK says:

@JenM – It is actually available. I bought and downloaded it.

  13. JenM says:

Thank you! Just bought it. I know what I’ll be reading next. I usually buy on Amazon since it’s easier to get on my Kindle that way, but buying direct from the author means she doesn’t have to pay the 30% commission to Amazon, so I’m happy to support her that way. I love her books.

  14. MirandaB says:

I’m also looking forward to Hope for the Best by Jodi Taylor, the latest St. Mary’s.

I’m poised for the Roanhorse, too. I just re-read the first one to get the characters solidified.

    The Five looks awesome.

  15. Anna says:

I had already pre-ordered The Austen Playbook (SO excited!!) and then pre-ordered Nisha Sharma’s newest from this post.

Second chance romances are my catnip, so I’m intrigued by Fumbled. I’ll probably check her out through the library first, though.

  16. Susan says:

@Miranda: Glad to see the shoutout for Jodi Taylor. I came down here to add it to the list if no one else had done it.

Also looking forward to the CS Harris book (esp in audio) and the Cat Sebastian.

  17. JudyW says:

    J. R. Ward and THE SAVIOR comes out in April (2nd) and the new Kylie Scott – REPEAT (April 7th). Yeah!!

  18. HeatherS says:

I am always down for a new Cat Sebastian. I’ve been meaning to read Chanel Cleeton – her book covers are so lovely.

  19. Deianira says:

@HeatherS: You should definitely read “Next Year in Havana”, Cleeton’s first novel; it’s as lovely to read as the cover is to look at! “Cuba” is on my list (not sure when I’ll get to it) & I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

  20. LK says:

I have preordered 2 books this month, which is unusual for me. I’m super bummed that they both come out after my rare solo trip with long plane ride. Hrmph.

  21. Denise says:

I read the netgalley of Getting Hot with the Scot and the next in the series, Smitten by the Brit.

It took me a bit to get into Getting Hot with the Scot, but I was glad I stuck with it. I loved Smitten by the Brit even more.

  22. […] releases: Gizmodo (sff), Smart Bitches (romance), Tor (ya […]

  23. HeatherS says:

This one was actually released in January, but I just found out about it and April is Fiesta month in San Antonio, so it’s relevant.

“Love Fiesta Style” is an anthology of 17 short romance stories by the San Antonio Romance Authors, the local chapter of RWA. The Kindle book is only $3.99 and all of the stories are set in San Antonio during the various Fiesta events in the month of April. They’re actually going to be selling and signing hard copies at a Half Price Books in town tomorrow, but I’m stuck working and won’t be able to go. :/
