Hide Your Wallet: August 25th Release Week

Welcome back to Hide Your Wallet!

It’s the last release week in August. There’s a lot on my personal reading list. It looks like releases in September are a bit more evenly spread out.

What are you excited for this week? Let us know in the comments!

  • Daggerbound

    Daggerbound by T. Kingfisher

    Author: T. Kingfisher
Released: August 25, 2026 by Bramble
    Genre: , , ,
    Series: Swordheart #2

New York Times bestselling author T. Kingfisher returns to the charming fantasy world of Swordheart in this delightful and unexpected new romantic adventure.

Learned Edmund, a disillusioned scholar, is transporting yet another precious relic from one stuffy temple to a different stuffy temple. Another great adventure for the ages…

But when Edmund is set upon by bandits, in desperation, he breaks the cardinal rule and grabs for the relic, an ancient sword. To his surprise, instead of unsheathing a rusty, ancient weapon, an alarmingly handsome man appears, wielding daggers of blue steel and cutting the thieves down.

This man is the Dervish, an immortal warrior who’s been trapped for centuries in a sword of enchanted steel, and is angry as hell about it. He hates the curse that put him there, and he wants to hate Edmund, just as he has hated every wielder before him.

But the damned scholar is just so sweet and clever and kind. And while the Dervish may be able to protect Edmund from bandits, cultists, dragons, and strange inhuman diplomats, he may find it much harder to protect his own heart.

I’m sure this is on many TBRs!

  • The Dark in Her Veins

The Dark in Her Veins by M.K. Lobb

    Author: M.K. Lobb
Released: August 25, 2026 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Divine Villains #1

From critically acclaimed, bestselling author MK Lobb comes a noir romantic fantasy set in a world in which sin is a fatal disease, and the rich hire the poor to carry out their basest instincts—until the forbidden romance between a sinner and a mysterious figure threatens to destroy everything.

In Valestadt, everything has a price. Sinning leaves its mark in the form of the Bloodrot, a slow-creeping disease that leads to madness, then death. Most sins are negligible, but murder—committed enough—can be fatal. For the rich, violence is something to be outsourced. For the poor, it’s a paycheck that comes with a cost.

Talin Keller is a sinner. Employed by  the holiest man in the city, the Prophet, she gets her hands dirty so his can stay clean. And with her Bloodrot rapidly advancing, Talin knows her next job could be her last. But when a new assignment puts Talin on a collision course with a shadowy figure known as “the Warden,” she begins to see a future for herself that doesn’t involve a body bag. If she can get close enough to the Warden, she can trade his life for her own freedom. That is, if she can keep her balance on the knife’s edge.

The closer Talin gets to the Warden, though, the more she finds herself falling for his sharp edges and twisted sense of justice. As savior and sinner bleed together, Talin finds the real threat isn’t either man – but a conspiracy tied to the past she hoped was dead.

Amanda: The heroine is a mercenary and this sounds deliciously dark.

  • Demons and Diplomacy

Demons and Diplomacy by Megan Frampton

    Author: Megan Frampton
Released: August 25, 2026 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,
Series: Ministry of Supernatural Affairs #1

A tantalizing pact between an ordinary woman and the silver-tongued son of the Devil is all that stands between Britain—and all hell breaking loose.

1851, London. All supernatural species have emerged from hiding, a result of The Great Revelation, led by Her Majesty, the vampiric Queen Victoria, and her dhamphir consort, Prince Albert.

Cora Hastings is the British government’s Species Ombudsman, a human tasked with keeping the peace between supernatural creatures. It’s run-of-the-mill enforcing the newly created shifting parameters, negotiating contracts between species, and generally making certain all Londoners are treated equally.

That is, until the Devil himself decides he wants to leave his hellish home and see the results of Prince Albert’s greatest accomplishment, the Great Exhibition. His arrival could upset the uneasy peace between creatures, and worse—he’s brought his son.

The Marquis of Hell is diabolically good-looking, unnaturally perceptive, and, well, a demon. Cora navigates her sinfully seductive diplomatic assignment as best she can, until she catches wind of a secret conspiracy set to come to fruition at the opening of the Great Exhibition. This leaves her with an impossible Either Cora enters an unholy alliance with the Devil’s son, or she watches as her world is torn asunder….

Amanda: I’m a sucker for a paranormal historical romance.

Sarah: I’ve said before that “Magical Bureaucracy” is a trend, and this is one with a species ombudsman. A paranormal romance ombudsman! Bring it on.

The Devil Knows Her Name by C.N. Vair

    Author: C.N. Vair
Released: August 25, 2026 by Berkley
    Genre: ,

In the isolated Appalachian town of Burrsville, Tess Wynne lives in precious quiet. Having been left for dead a century earlier, Tess made a deal with the devil to stay in the only home she’s known. Tending to her wildlife sanctuary, she keeps the land and its people safe – pulling on spidering threads of ancient magic, trying to preserve the balance of nature against the encroaching ravages of human influence. But, every autumn, the devil returns, offering Tess more power in exchange for a foothold into the human world. And, every autumn, Tess refuses.

As Tess prepares her wildlife sanctuary for the winter, an unexpected addition to Burrsville catches the local’s attention. Freshly arrived Zeke Abdee, the town’s new pastor, begins to sinisterly mould the townspeople to his will.

With everyone slowly turning on Tess, Pastor Zeke is determined to stake his claim on the very land where Tess keeps her sanctuary. Cornered, a desperate Tess pushes her magic to the darkest edges. All the while, the devil bides his time, waiting for Tess to decide if she will be prey – or predator…

Amanda: Appalachian horror always ranks highly for me and I’m seeing a lot of it this season.

  • The Night Pool

The Night Pool by Lauren Lee Smith

    Author: Lauren Lee Smith
Released: August 25, 2026 by Blackstone Publishing
    Genre: , ,

The Night Pool is a blood-soaked, page-turning horror set in the Gold Rush West, where three women must battle monsters both human and inhuman to survive—perfect for fans of Alma Katsu’s The Hunger and Victor LaValle’s Lone Women.

The American West is no safe haven for women—least of all in the Gold Rush town of Coloma, California. Not for Clara Tice, the blacksmith’s strange and stubborn daughter. Not for Mei, the healer whose calm presence in the makeshift camp for Chinese immigrants contrasts sharply with her brother’s hard-eyed pursuit of riches. And certainly not for Haloke, a Nisenan shaman’s granddaughter whose native village has been devastated by smallpox, hunger, and the relentless greed of Outsiders.

One night, Clara and Haloke meet at the river’s edge and watch in horror as Clementine Cobbs, the town beauty, is lured across the water. Together they witness something terrible in the Night Pool. Soon after, an unseen attacker descends upon the mining men of Coloma, abandoning heartless bodies one by one. As the gruesome killings in Coloma threaten to incite further violence, Clara, Haloke, and Mei find themselves unlikely allies—without the gangs, guns, or bravado of the men who claim Coloma’s riches. The three women must work together to confront the evil that menaces them from both monsters and men.

A gripping tale of sisterhood, vengeance, and survival, The Night Pool explores the horrors of greed and lust, and the hidden strength of the most vulnerable among us.

Elyse: I’m intrigued by the blend of horror and western.

    Amanda: Echoing Elyse’s sentiments!

  • Roped

    Roped by Saffron Kent

    Author: Saffron Kent
Released: August 25, 2026 by Forever
    Genre: , , , ,

God of Malice meets Yellowstone in this stalker romance full of searing spice and featuring a college student being hunted by a cowboy utterly obsessed with her.

    I’m Peyton Turner. I’m nineteen years old, and I have . . . a stalker.

No, I don’t have proof—but I know he’s watching me. I feel his stare burning through my bedroom window at night, smell his intoxicating scent when he’s close. Every time I try to catch him, he vanishes into the shadows like he was never there at all.

All I know for certain is that under his black Stetson, he wears a skull mask. It almost hides the wicked scar carved down his face, but it can’t hide his piercing green eyes. Eyes that haunt me.

I should be terrified of his attention. Instead, I find myself drawn to it. I only understand the danger too late, when my best friend goes missing. I’ve decided I won’t run, though. I won’t hide. I’ll set a trap to lure him out of the dark and force him to lead me to her.

But the man I’m hunting is a far more skilled predator than I imagined. And once his rope tightens around me, I’m no longer the one in control. I’m the prey.

Amanda: I’m on a dark romance kick. We’ll see if this lands for me. I don’t love heroines below the drinking age.

  • The Whitechapel Full Moon Society

The Whitechapel Full Moon Society by Elizabeth DeLozier

    Author: Elizabeth DeLozier
Released: August 25, 2026 by Dutton
    Genre: , , ,

Set in Victorian London during Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror, this gripping, original novel is perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab, Dana Schwartz, and Sarah Penner.

When Caroline Foster arrives at the Whitechapel Full Moon Society in search of her missing brother, she finds a dilapidated façade belying an interior as opulent as any exclusive gentlemen’s club. In exchange for room and board, Caroline is hired as the Full Moon’s maid, where she is given three orders: don’t ask personal questions, stay out of the iron-barred room on the second floor, and remain in her bedroom from sunup to sundown on the full moon.

But when it is revealed that the previous maid was murdered—an early victim of Jack the Ripper—and her brother has left behind no answers, only more questions, Caroline begins to suspect her hosts might be hiding something. As more bodies turn up with a connection to the Society, Caroline fears she may have unwittingly stumbled into a bedtime story, the kind with monsters and curses, family secrets and ancient lore.

Tantalizing and pulsing, Elizabeth DeLozier’s sophomore novel gives an exciting alternative look into the infamous Jack the Ripper story with a major, supernatural twist.

Amanda: We’re ramping up to spooky season!

Daggerbound, hooray! I’ll be using my lunch break to drive halfway across town to my neighborhood indie for my copy – in resisting the urge to claim car trouble and spend the rest of the afternoon reading it.
