Hide Your Wallet

November 2022 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • A Restless Truth

A Restless Truth by Freya Marske

    Author: Freya Marske
    Released: November 1, 2022 by Tor.com
    Genre: , ,
    Series: The Last Binding #2

Magic! Murder! Shipboard romance! The second entry in Freya Marske’s beloved The Last Binding trilogy, the queer historical fantasy series that began with A Marvellous Light

The most interesting things in Maud Blyth’s life have happened to her brother Robin, but she’s ready to join any cause, especially if it involves magical secrets that may threaten the whole of the British Isles. Bound for New York on the R.M.S. Lyric, she’s ready for an adventure.

What she actually finds is a dead body, a disrespectful parrot, and a beautiful stranger in Violet Debenham, who is everything—a magician, an actress, a scandal—Maud has been trained to fear and has learned to desire. Surrounded by the open sea and a ship full of loathsome, aristocratic suspects, they must solve a murder and untangle a conspiracy that began generations before them.

Amanda: Cozy fantasy romances have been my jam lately and I’ve been digging this series.

Sarah: Closed loop murder mystery with magic aboard a luxury cruise ship? I also interviewed the author and had a BALL.

  • Keeper of Enchanted Rooms

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie Holmberg

    Author: Charlie Holmberg
    Released: November 1, 2022 by 47North
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Whimbrel House #1

Rhode Island, 1846. Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay. Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home—until he realizes he has no choice. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. Ever.

Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums. She advises that it’s in Merritt’s best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally. To do that, she’ll need to move in, too.

Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated. And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

Amanda: I’m down for a cozy, fantasy mystery with ties to New England.

  • Ocean’s Echo

    Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell

    Author: Everina Maxwell
Released: November 1, 2022 by Tor Books
    Genre: , ,

Rich socialite, inveterate flirt, and walking disaster Tennalhin Halkana can read minds. Tennal, like all neuromodified “readers,” is a security threat on his own. But when controlled, readers are a rare asset. Not only can they read minds, but they can navigate chaotic space, the maelstroms surrounding the gateway to the wider universe.

Conscripted into the military under dubious circumstances, Tennal is placed into the care of Lieutenant Surit Yeni, a duty-bound soldier, principled leader, and the son of a notorious traitor general. Whereas Tennal can read minds, Surit can influence them. Like all other neuromodified “architects,” he can impose his will onto others, and he’s under orders to control Tennal by merging their minds.

Surit accepted a suspicious promotion-track request out of desperation, but he refuses to go through with his illegal orders to sync and control an unconsenting Tennal. So they lie: They fake a sync bond and plan Tennal’s escape.

Their best chance arrives with a salvage-retrieval mission into chaotic space—to the very neuromodifcation lab that Surit’s traitor mother destroyed twenty years ago. And among the rubble is a treasure both terrible and unimaginably powerful, one that upends a decades-old power struggle, and begins a war.

Tennal and Surit can no longer abandon their unit or their world. The only way to avoid life under full military control is to complete the very sync they’ve been faking.

Can two unwilling weapons of war bring about peace?

If you liked Ellen’s review of Winter’s Orbit, Maxwell is returning to the world with a new couple.

White Horse is a gritty, vibrant debut from Erika T. Wurth about an Indigenous woman who must face her past when she discovers a bracelet haunted by her mother’s spirit.

Some people are haunted in more ways than one.

Heavy metal, ripped jeans, Stephen King novels, and the occasional beer at the White Horse have defined urban Indian Kari James’s life so far. But when her cousin Debby finds an old family bracelet that once belonged to Kari’s mother, it inadvertently calls up both her mother’s ghost and a monstrous entity, and her willful ignorance about her past is no longer sustainable…

Haunted by visions of her mother and hunted by this mysterious creature, Kari must search for what happened to her mother all those years ago. Her father, permanently disabled from a car crash, can’t help her. Her Auntie Squeaker seems to know something but isn’t eager to give it all up at once. Debby’s anxious to help, but her controlling husband keeps getting in the way. Kari’s journey toward a truth long denied by both her family and law enforcement forces her to confront her dysfunctional relationships, thoughts about a friend she lost in childhood, and her desire for the one thing she’s always wanted but could never have.

Every great city has a soul. A human avatar that embodies their city’s heart and wields its magic. New York? She’s got six.

But all is not well in the city that never sleeps. Though Brooklyn, Manny, Bronca, Venezia, Padmini, and Neek have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading–and destroying the entire universe in the process–the mysterious capital “E” Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and “law and order” may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside. In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction.

  • Raven Unveiled

    Raven Unveiled by Grace Draven

    Author: Grace Draven
Released: November 8, 2022 by Ace
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Fallen Empire #3

A woman with the gift to speak to the dead—and the assassin pursuing her—may be the only chance a crumbling empire has of holding back true evil, in this electrifying fantasy romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Radiance.

Siora has been on the run for longer than she cares to remember, from her past and her gift. Born with the ability to see and speak to ghosts, she has heard their desperate pleas as an otherworldly predator stalks the dead amid the fertile killing fields of the collapsing Krael Empire. The creature’s power and reach are growing with every soul it consumes, but Siora is preoccupied with her own troubles: namely an assassin who has sworn an oath of vengeance against her.

Gharek of Cabast was once the right-hand man of the reviled empress but is now a wanted fugitive. Although his reasons for hunting Siora are viscerally personal, what Gharek can’t anticipate is that when he finally does find her, she will hold the key to saving his world, or what’s left of it. To make good on old debts and protect the vulnerable dead from a malevolent force, Gharek and Siora will both need to make an ally out of an enemy—and trust that will be enough to save each other.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

As of right now, I have very little on my November TBR, which is just as well given as I’m still trying to catch up with books from October.

NATURAL DISASTER by Skye Warren & Amelia Wilde (November 8) is the second book in their MMF Deserted Island trilogy about a man and a woman stranded on an island and their encounters with the island’s sole inhabitant, a hermit waiting for the end of the world.

FORGIVE ME FATHER by Garrett Leigh (November 14) is the next book in her m/m Rebel Kings MC series.

HIDING PLACES by Skye Warren (November 15) is part of her Rochester series inspired by JANE EYRE. This book involves two people who were secondary characters in the original trilogy.

New HPs from three of my favorite Queens of Angsty Heartache arrive November 29: Maisey Yates’s FORBIDDEN TO THE DESERT PRINCE (a woman falls for her betrothed’s brother); Caitlin Crews’s THE CHRISTMAS HE CLAIMED HIS SECRETARY (a virginal secretary agrees to pose as a billionaire’s mistress); and Jackie Ashenden’s THE MAID THE GREEK MARRIED (to escape a compound where she has been held in domestic servitude, a maid agrees to marry a wealthy widower).

COME BACK FOR ME by Ellis (Ella) James is scheduled for November 30. It’s a forced-proximity, age-gap, m/m romance set amongst fire fighters in Wyoming. However, there is very little about the book (the start of a new series) on Amazon right now, so I won’t be surprised if the publication date is postponed.

  2. Ooh, I read an ARC of Freya Marske’s A Restless Truth, and it’s SO good – just deliciously fun (and really steamy)!

  3. Carol S. says:

Some interesting-looking knitting books coming out in November: KNITTING THE NEIGHBORHOOD, which is knitting patterns inspired by Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood. A knitted trolley! cardigans! King Friday puppet!

SARK is a new collection by Kate Davies, with patterns using twisted stitches. Kate’s books are always beautifully photographed, too.

Wendy Bernard’s ULTIMATE ALL AROUND STITCH DICTIONARY features 300 stitch patterns presented top-down, bottom-up, flat and in the round.

And I’m always a sucker for northern knits…VIKING KNITS by Lasse Matberg is a collection for men, women and kids inspired by Norwegian patterns. Look carefully at this one. What I’ve seen of the sweaters look beautiful but the instructions are less extensive than American ones and you’ll probably have to substitute yarns as the line used isn’t readily available in the US.

  4. Lisa F says:

Kiss me Catalina and Bromance are both confirmed amazing; gave them As. The rest are on my TBR!

  5. Elizabeth says:

NK Jemisin was on NPR today (Tuesday). Awesome interview about the book and series!

  6. Kris says:

Flirting with the Beast by Jane Porter is out Nov 28. I’ve never read anything by her but the series seems to involve older couples which I am definitely half of. I’ve been in the mood for books with couple in their 40’s to 60’s but I’ve never had much luck finding books that are realistic to what an older couple faces.

  7. KitBee says:

NEVER RESCUE A ROGUE by Virginia Heath comes out November 8. It’s book #2 in her Merriwell Sisters historical romance series, and I liked book #1 enough to check this one out.

  8. LisaM says:

I had the day off from work today, and I was planning to spend it reading Victoria Goddard’s sequel to Hands of the Emperor, At the Feet of the Sun, which was originally set to release today. But it’s been pushed back to Nov. 21st (if you buy through her website) or Dec. 1st (major retailers). I didn’t take the day off just for that, but I felt oddly off-balance when she announced the delay.

Instead I picked up my pre-ordered copy of A Restless Truth, and also Lois Bujold’s latest compilation of Penric and Desdemona stories, Penric’s Labors. It has Masquerade in Lodi,The Orphans of Raspay, and The Physicians of Vilnoc – but best of all a MAP, and an “Outreduction” at the end with some brief notes on each story.

I was waiting all day for the call that my copy had come in of Megan Whalen Turner’s Moira’s Pen, A Queen’s Thief Collection. It has short stories (some previously published, some new), art and poetry and a cake recipe. I’d have bought it just for the cover. It was released today too, and I really hope my local indie hasn’t lost my order.

I am also really looking forward to Cat Sebastian’s Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots. I’ll probably need to re-read the first two Cabot books in the meantime.

  9. Lace says:

I’m a third of the way through A RESTLESS TRUTH, and if there’s a funnier pornography-reading scene out there, I’d like to know what it is. Took me a couple of stop-starts to be able to keep reading without cracking up.

  10. ReadKnitSnark says:

Celia Lake’s BEST FOOT FORWARD releases on Friday, November 4th. It’s the beginning of a new series but has recurring characters from her earlier books. Cannot wait!

Quote from CL’s newsletter (Kiya is her editor):

Or as Kiya said when I was writing it:

“Back when I said, ‘…you know…’ in previous book edits I did not realize how much her muse needed this M/M aroace/bi-allo-(incidentally polyam) enemies-to-it’s-complicated there-was-only-one-bed espionage and WWI trauma-healing romp…”

  11. Michael I says:

    @ReadKnitSnark

BEST FOOT FORWARD is actually available right now for Kindle (according to its Amazon listing it was released on November 1).
