The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month. We also think this … Continue reading November 2022 New Releases, Part One →

It’s Cover Awe time! For those who are new to the site, this is where we look at covers we think are intriguing, pretty, or just really dang neat! Cover design by Melissa Williams Design Sarah: All the Holmberg covers have been so visually striking. I love the papercut design. Amanda: Yes! I love a good theme that carries over to all of an author’s books. Don’t get me started on when a series changes … Continue reading Cover Awe: Abs, Millennial Pink, & More →
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie is $3.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is being price-matched at select vendors. Leckie’s Ancillary Justice is a favorite with Carrie and SBTB commenters. Readers loved the Hamlet-inspired plot, but warn that the book contains first and second POV, which takes some getting used to.

RECOMMENDED: Graceling by Kristin Cashore is $2.99! This is also a Kindle Daily Deal. This is a YA fantasy novel with romantic elements and I LOVED it. The entire series is pretty great, to be honest. The heroine is strong and all sorts of badass, but she’s also trying to cope with being a hired killer for the king.

RECOMMENDED: My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows is $1.99 at Amazon! Carrie’s review for this dropped today and she gave it a B+:
Sometimes a book comes along that is so fun, so unabashedly silly, and so clever that it makes you glad to be alive. Such is the case with My Plain Jane, which re-imagines Jane Eyre in such a bizarre and gleeful fashion that even in the grip of my regularly scheduled holiday depression I was overcome with bliss.

I read this book in two days, partly because I remain very charmed by the world in which it is set, but also in part because the story itself speeds along from scene to scene, so it’s easy to read quickly. But that speed comes at the expense of emotional depth for the characters. I’m along for the ride happily, but I recognize what I’m missing. I love the world, the magical system of this … Continue reading The Plastic Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg →

This has been a rather difficult review to write, but then, Followed by Frost was a rather difficult book to read. Not because it was a bad book. Far from it: Holmberg writes with an engaging, readable narrative, and once the plot really got going I was glued to the book right up to the end. But Followed by Frost’s plot felt like it suffered from a series of false starts, which meant that it … Continue reading Followed by Frost by Charlie N. Holmberg →
Smitha is seventeen and seems to have it all: she’s one of the smartest, prettiest, richest girls in town. Sure, she can be a little bit vain and lazy and rude, but what does that matter? Then she makes the mistake of turning down the wrong guy, who curses her to be “as cold as her heart.” Now winter forever follows her, anyone who touches her skin freezes to death, and she can never, ever … Continue reading Followed by Frost by Charlie N.
