  • My Plain Jane

My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand

RECOMMENDED: My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows is $1.99 at Amazon! Carrie’s review for this dropped today and she gave it a B+:

Sometimes a book comes along that is so fun, so unabashedly silly, and so clever that it makes you glad to be alive. Such is the case with My Plain Jane, which re-imagines Jane Eyre in such a bizarre and gleeful fashion that even in the grip of my regularly scheduled holiday depression I was overcome with bliss.

You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)

    Or does she?

Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.

  • The Plastic Magician

The Plastic Magician by Charlie Holmberg

The Plastic Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg is $1.99 at Amazon! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Sarah reviewed this one and she wound up giving it a C. Despite being charmed by the world Holmberg built, Sarah wished that the characters and their relationships had a bit more emotional depth.

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg returns to the enchanting world of The Paper Magician.

Alvie Brechenmacher has arrived in London to begin her training in Polymaking—the magical discipline of bespelling plastic. Polymaking is the newest form of magic, and in a field where there is so much left to learn, every Polymaker dreams of making the next big discovery.

Even though she is only an apprentice, Alvie is an inventor at heart, and she is determined to make as many discoveries—in as short a time frame—as she can. Luckily for her, she’s studying under the world-renowned magician Marion Praff, who is just as dedicated as Alvie is.

Alvie’s enthusiasm reinvigorates her mentor’s work, and together they create a device that could forever change Polymaking—and the world. But when a rival learns of their plans, he conspires to steal their invention and take the credit for it himself.

To thwart him, Alvie will need to think one step ahead. For in the high-stakes world of magical discovery, not everyone plays fair…

  • You May Kiss the Bride

You May Kiss the Bride by Lisa Berne

PODCAST RECOMMENDEDYou May Kiss the Bride by Lisa Berne is $1.99! Former Avon publicist, Jessie Edwards, had some great things to say about this book on a previous podcast episode:

There’s so much tension, there’s so much passive-aggressiveness going on, and there’s just sharp comment after sharp comment, that it’s like all of this, Jane-Austen-esque level of wit running through it, and the social dynamics that are displayed there. I was fascinated by it.

In an unforgettable debut, Lisa Berne introduces you to the Penhallow Dynasty—men destined to marry, but hesitant to love.

Wealthy and arrogant, Gabriel Penhallow knows it’s time to fulfill his dynastic duty. All he must do is follow “The Penhallow way”—find a biddable bride, produce an heir and a spare, and then live separate lives. It’s worked so well for generations, certainly one kiss with the delectable Livia Stuart isn’t going to change things. Society dictates he marry her, and one chit is as good as another as long as she’s from a decent family.

But Livia’s transformation from an original to a mundane diamond of the first water makes Gabriel realize he desperately wants the woman who somehow provoked him into that kiss. And for all the ladies who’ve thrown themselves at him, it’s the one who wants to flee whom he now wants. But how will he keep this independent miss from flying away?

  • Hexbreaker

    Hexbreaker by Jordan Hawk

Hexbreaker by Jordan L. Hawk is 99c at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a gay romance with magic. It also features a romance between a cop and a shifter. Readers loved the premise and the chemistry between the heroes, but wished they understood the worldbuilding more.

Will a dark history doom their future together?

New York copper Tom Halloran is a man with a past. If anyone finds out he once ran with the notorious O’Connell tunnel gang, he’ll spend the rest of his life doing hard time behind bars. But Tom’s secret is threatened when a horrible murder on his beat seems to have been caused by the same ancient magic that killed his gang.

Cat shifter Cicero is determined to investigate the disappearance of one friend and the death of another, even though no one else believes the cases are connected. When the trail of his investigation crosses Tom’s, the very bohemian Cicero instinctively recognizes the uncultured Irish patrolman as his witch. Though they’re completely unsuited to one another, Cicero has no choice but to work alongside Tom…all the while fighting against the passion growing within.

Tom knows that taking Cicero as his familiar would only lead to discovery and disaster. Yet as the heat between them builds, Tom’s need for the other man threatens to overcome every rational argument against becoming involved.

But when their investigation uncovers a conspiracy that threatens all of New York, Tom must make the hardest decision of his life: to live a lie and gain his heart’s desire, or to confess the truth and sacrifice it all.

  1. Ren Benton says:

Alissa Johnson’s NEARLY A LADY is free. (I think Amazon only, so that blows, but I enjoyed the book, so I’ll direct you to the evil overlord anyway.) Somebody dies, and the hero discovers there’s a ward who’s been kept secret from the family. He goes to visit, discovers two women valliantly surviving but in what he considers squalor, and decides to right the wrongs with home renovations and seasons and whatnot. I had this to say when I read it a year ago: “…refreshing in that the hero has war trauma, but that hasn’t become his entire personality. He’s kind to everyone and has a sense of humor (I chortled a lot) even while determined to keep the feels at bay because he can’t handle caring about anyone else who might get hurt. The heroine is perfectly happy to be a spinster farmer in the beginning, middle, and end if he can’t get his shit together, so good for her.”

  2. Suzanne says:

@Ren, Alissa Johnson is one of those talented writers who, I feel, flies under most people’s radars. I’ve read all her books, and her latest Victorian-set series is so above what is out there for HR. (As always, YMMV.)

  3. No, the Other Anne says:

Looks like my local library has several of Alissa Johnson’s books, including Nearly A Lady, all for free without supporting Evil (that I know of). Thanks for the rec, both! Spinster farmers are some of my favorite people.

  4. Kim says:

I think “You May Kiss the Bride” might be my least favorite of the Penhallow books (favorite is “The Bride Takes a Groom”), BUT I love them all! Definitely recommend all three.

  5. Katie C. says:

I read You May Kiss the Bride last year. It didn’t knock my socks off and I had a few minor issues with the book, but I enjoyed both the story and the writing enough that I added the second book in the series to my TBR. Which probably means I will read it in 3-4 years since I have so much to read!!

Also @RenBenton, your recommendation sounds awesome, so I went right out and got it for my Kindle.

  6. Ren Benton says:

Friday (January 11), Farrah Rochon’s HUDDLE WITH ME TONIGHT is free. Book blogger and football player end up in a televised cookoff after she trashes his cookbook.

And I’m sure this has been mentioned, since everyone seems to love these, but the box set of the first three books in Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series is going for $2.99.
