  • Graceling

    Graceling by Kristin Cashore

RECOMMENDED: Graceling by Kristin Cashore is $2.99! This is also a Kindle Daily Deal. This is a YA fantasy novel with romantic elements and I LOVED it. The entire series is pretty great, to be honest. The heroine is strong and all sorts of badass, but she’s also trying to cope with being a hired killer for the king.

Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight – she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.

When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.

She never expects to become Po’s friend.

She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace – or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away.

  • Smoke and Summons

Smoke and Summons by Charlie Holmberg

Smoke and Summons by Charlie N. Holmberg is $1.99 at Amazon! I’m unsure of this fantasy novel is more YA or not, so if you’ve read it, do chime in. Readers loved the world building and romantic elements. However, there is a cliffhanger.

A captivating world of demons and dark magic from the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician novels.

As a human vessel for an ancient spirit, Sandis has never lived an ordinary life. At the command of her master, she can be transformed against her will into his weapon—a raging monster summoned to do his bidding. Unlike other vessels, Sandis can host extremely powerful spirits, but hosting such creatures can be fatal. To stay alive, she must run. And in a city fueled by smoke and corruption, she finds a surprising ally.

A cunning thief-for-hire, Rone owns a rare device that grants him immortality for one minute every day—a unique advantage that will come in handy in Sandis’s fight for freedom. But Sandis’s master knows how powerful she is. He’s determined to get her back, and he has the manpower to find her, wherever she runs.

Now, to outwit her pursuers, Sandis must put all her trust in Rone and his immortal device. For her master has summoned more than mere men to hunt her down . . .

  • A Pirate of Her Own

A Pirate of Her Own by Kinley MacGregor

A Pirate of Her Own by Kinley MacGregor is $1.99! This is an older romance published in 1999. Readers loved the reporter heroine, especially in a historical setting. But…like I said, it was published in the 90s, so expect some Old School elements (i.e. kidnapping, for one).

Few know Morgan Drake’s true name—but many fear the Sea Wolf, the scourge of the ocean, a fearless pirate who frees impressed American sailors from British vessels. Now a beautiful reporter is willing to risk her life, her innocence, and her heart to reveal the secrets that Morgan is determined to protect at any cost . . .

A headstrong and courageous young woman in a man’s world, Serenity James knows she is barely tolerated in her father’s newspaper office. An exclusive story about the dreaded Sea Wolf, however, will earn her the respect she so fervently desires. But she never expected to be kidnapped by the sexy and dangerous brigand whose bold exploits have fired her imagination—or to discover the adventure she’s always longed for in Morgan Drake’s passionate caress.

  • Desperate Girls

    Desperate Girls by Laura Griffin

Desperate Girls by Laura Griffin is $2.99! This romantic suspense received a B grade from Elyse, who wanted just a bit more tension and suspense:

If you’re a fan of a damn good mystery with strong female characters and lots of detail, and you don’t mind some sexytimes as a bonus, then I think you’ll love this book.

With the grit, sex, and suspense of Goliath, New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin’s Desperate Girls is a tightly wound, fast-paced thriller that examines intricate relationship dynamics in the wake of a killer’s symbolic revenge spree.

Defense attorney Brynn Holloran is right at home among cops, criminals, and tough-as-nails prosecutors. With her sharp wit and pointed words, she has a tendency to intimidate, and she likes it that way. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom, but in her personal life, she’s a mess.

When a vicious murderer she once helped prosecute resurfaces and starts a killing spree to wipeout those who put him behind bars, one thing becomes clear: Brynn needs to run for her life.

With no help from the police, Brynn is forced to take matters into her own hands, turning to a private security firm for protection. But when Brynn defies advice and gets involved in the investigation, even the former Secret Service agent assigned to protect her may not be able to keep her safe. With every new clue she discovers, Brynn is pulled back into the vortex of a disturbing case from her past.

As the clock ticks down on a manhunt, Brynn’s desperate search for the truth unearths long-buried secrets and reignites a killer’s fury.

Kinley MacGregor = Sherrilyn Kenyon, so if you’re generally fond of her writing (or not), that’s likely to track across subject matter.

  2. NancyH says:

I second the recommendation of Kristin Cashore’s books! A friend of mine somehow knows a friend or relative of hers and sent me the series in hardcover a billion years ago and I really enjoyed her treatment of heroines coming to terms with their power.

Also, Eloisa James’s Born to be Wilde (book three of the Wildes of Lindow Castle series) is $1.99 through June 3.

  3. Bre says:

Graceling is soooo good! I didn’t think I’d like it but it came highly recommended from a friend. I was so sad when it ended.

  4. Alexandra says:

I have heard amazing things about the Graceling from The Clockwork Reader!

  5. kitkat9000 says:

Graceling definitely sounds like my jam but I’m going to pass on Desperate Girls. Huge pet peeve: people in danger, especially life or death kinds, who don’t/won’t listen to the experts they’ve hired who actually have the necessary skillsets and are trained for just those situtations. That’s venturing too far into TSTL territory for me and I live in fear of damaging my phone or kindle from aggravation.

  6. HeatherS says:

“Arctic Sun”, Annabeth Albert’s newest m/m contemporary, is $0.99 on Kindle today.

Also, the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce is $1.99 per book as a Kindle Daily Deal today.

  7. EllenM says:

I found the paper magician series to be one of dramatically diminishing returns in terms of enjoyment so I’m pretty hesitant to read any more Holmberg absent a glowing recommendation
