    Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is $4.99 at Amazon! I don’t love the new covers, but that’s neither here nor there. Subsequent books in the series are 99c right now, so stock up! I’ve been listening to it and it’s very good on audio.

The apocalypse will be televised! Welcome to the first book in the wildly popular and addictive Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman—now with bonus material exclusive to this print edition.

You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what.

Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain’t your ordinary game show.

Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the Dungeon. Survival is optional. Keeping the viewers entertained is not.

  • Swordheart

    Swordheart by T. Kingfisher

Swordheart by T. Kingfisher is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B-. We also mentioned this in two Rec Leagues: Gentle Historical or Fantasy Road Trips and “Normal” Heroines in Fantasy Romance.

The delicious bodyguard romance of From Blood and Ash meets the delightful charm of The Princess Bride in this cozy fantasy romance from New York Times bestselling author T. Kingfisher

Halla has unexpectedly inherited the estate of the wealthy distant uncle she’s been caring for for the past decade. Unfortunately, she is also saddled with money-hungry relatives full of devious plans for how to wrest the inheritance away from her.

While hiding in her bedroom to escape her family, Halla inspects the ancient sword that’s been collecting dust on the wall since before she moved in. On a whim, she pulls it down and unsheaths it—and suddenly a man appears in her bedroom. His name is Sarkis, he tells her, and he is an immortal warrior trapped in a prison of enchanted steel.

Sarkis is sworn to protect whoever wields the sword, and for Halla—a most unusual wielder—he finds himself not fending off grand armies and deadly assassins but instead everything from kindly-seeming bandits to roving inquisitors to her own in-laws. But as Halla and Sarkis become closer, they overlook the biggest threat of all—the sword itself.

  • The Rakess

    The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

RECOMMENDED: The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham is $1.99! Carrie read this one and have it an A-:

The combination of personal catnip with descriptive language and complex characterization is spot on. I recommend this for fans of vocal feminism, found family, angst, and explicit sex in their historicals. I plan to read my copy many, many times!

Meet the SOCIETY OF SIRENS—three radical, libertine ladies determined to weaponize their scandalous reputations to fight for justice and the love they deserve…

    She’s a Rakess on a quest for women’s rights…

Seraphina Arden’s passions include equality, amorous affairs, and wild, wine-soaked nights. To raise funds for her cause, she’s set to publish explosive memoirs exposing the powerful man who ruined her. Her ideals are her purpose, her friends are her family, and her paramours are forbidden to linger in the morning.

    He’s not looking for a summer lover…

Adam Anderson is a wholesome, handsome, widowed Scottish architect, with two young children, a business to protect, and an aversion to scandal. He could never, ever afford to fall for Seraphina. But her indecent proposal—one month, no strings, no future—proves too tempting for a man who strains to keep his passions buried with the losses of his past.

    But one night changes everything…

What began as a fling soon forces them to confront painful secrets—and yearnings they thought they’d never have again. But when Seraphina discovers Adam’s future depends on the man she’s about to destroy, she must decide what to protect…her desire for justice, or her heart.

  • Backstage Pass

    Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning

Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning is $1.99! Right now, I only see the sale price reflected at Amazon. This is book one in the erotic contemporary romance series, Sinners on Tour from back in 2010!

A musician finds his muse and inspiration with a sexy psychologist in this erotic romance by a New York Times and USA Today–bestselling author.

When Myrna Evans goes on tour with the Sinners to study groupie behavior, every guy in the band tries to seduce her. But the lead guitarist is the only one she wants to get her hands on, even if getting involved with him is all kinds of forbidden.

Brian Sinclair has been grappling with a creative block—unable to compose music for months. But when he tumbles into bed with the uninhibited Myrna, he hears exquisite guitar riffs and finger-burning solos in his mind in the midst of their passionate embraces. He grabs a ballpoint pen and composes what will be blockbuster new songs, writing them all over her body and leading to some fun sex play . . . but how is he going to convince Myrna that he’s not looking for a one-tour score? Instead, this rocker’s interested in finding his forever.

  1. Laurel says:

I absolutely loved Swordheart. T. Kingfisher has another book in this series coming out in August, and I can’t wait. She writes wonderful books, full of humor. This is not one of her horror-type books, so if you haven’t read her because you don’t like horror, this would be a good way to dip your toe in her oeuvre. (Her Saint of Steel series is my absolute favorite of hers, and this book is set in the same world.)

  2. MichelleKnitter says:

I love the Sinners series. Amazon has it as a “box set” rather than buying each book. My favorite is a novella set in the same world, “One Starry Night.”

  3. PamG says:

Just wanted to say that I read Backstage Pass back in the day and found it pretty heavy on the erotica and kink. It’s telling that I remember this book just from the blurb after all this time, as I deleted it from my Kindle all those years ago. (I no longer delete for fear of repurchasing.) Turns out it was verrrrry memorable. Also, in retrospect, that title is hilarious.

  5. garlicknitter says:

I’ve been plowing through the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, mostly for Princess Donut. I’m saddened that my library system doesn’t seem to have the audiobooks, but they do have some in Spanish! I’ve been working on improving my Spanish, and I’m at the point where I can read it enough to be going on with…this should help me get better, especially with current colloquial language

  6. @Amanda says:

@garlicknitter: Because the audiobook is currently an Audible exclusive, I suspect that’s why library systems have been unable to add them to their catalog.

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

I also loved the Kingfisher and the bridge to the Clocktaur and Paladin series. As with all Kingfisher, there is funny dialogue, great found family, and a delightful cast of secondary characters. (If she ever wrote a book on the theology of those series, I would 100% read that!)

I liked the premise of THE RAKESS, but the execution didn’t totally work for me—I never really liked either of the MCs and the secondary characters were underdeveloped for my taste. I preferred the second half of the book—more action and more conflict to drive the plot forward.

  8. book_reader_ea01sj71r4 says:

Thanks for the head’s up @Laurel. I have indeed been avoiding Kingfisher because horror is not my thing.

  9. Escapeologist says:

Dungeon Crawler Carl is currently being adapted as a comic on Webtoon, I read the first 10 episodes or so and enjoyed the Princess Donut scenes

  10. Msb says:

The Swordheart review is a rare occasion of my disagreeing with Carrie; the slow pace of the plot is part of the point. Every part of Halla’s quest is work that takes time, money and effort to accomplish, and the time also enables the characters to get to know and (mostly) love each other. It’s also a nice corrective to fantasy novels’ frequent practice of treating journeys on foot, cart or horseback as something as quick and easy as driving to the store. (And what’s with the very inaccurate blurb text? Those who want a plot summary can get a much better one from Carrie.)
I’ve pre-ordered book 2, though I’m a bit disappointed that it’s about the Dervish and not Angharad. Kingfisher’s non-horror books are autobuys for me.

  11. JudyW says:

It’s a shame about the Dungeon Crawler books because the Audible is the way to go here. I listened to 48 books last year (according to Audible) and this title has by far the best narrator. Worth going for the listen, especially if you love Donut.
