I just saw that Kresley Cole’s most recent (and the start of a new series) is $1.99 on Amazon Canada.
Kresley Cole’s book is also on sale in the US at Amazon. I bought it at the list price and haven’t read it yet. I should know better to wait. The fact that it has been put on sale not even a month after it comes out is why I rarely pre-order books anymore.
I liked both Circe and Song of Achilles, but found them a little disappointing, possibly because they were so hyped. Lore Olympus is probably my favorite retelling of Greek myths, although I admit I enjoyed Pulley’s Hymn to Dionysus – with all the possible warnings about how Pulley is as problematic, in all the same ways, here as ever – so my taste is clearly questionable.
The KJ Charles is utterly delightful, obviously, and of course you don’t have to be familiar with Heyer to love it, but I particularly appreciate this as it relates to the text that inspired it (which is precisely where Miller falls down imo; she brings nothing that wasn’t already there).
The Atwater I expected to love, but could not stand. I know I am in the minority on this one too. Idk, I am starting to be suspicious of whimsical as a descriptor, it seems to mean I am going to find a book idiotic and half-baked.
I enjoyed AUTOMATIC NOODLE very much (kept calling it ATOMIC NOODLE in my head). Just a lovely story about determined, deactivated robots who come together to make great noodles. Found community, family and everything that feels good right now.
I had an opposite take on 2 of these from other commentors so just another POV here (and of course YMMV!), but I personally loved Half A Soul – it is a fantastic allegory for neurodivergence and masking that was a really great read for me at the time. I also LOVE flawed characters that support, and don’t try to fix, each other, and this book was very much that – while still calling each other on their shit, but having compassion for why they are making mistakes too. Just a great read for me.
Automatic Noodle on the other hand I liked ok – the characters and world-building were great, but the ending was very underwhelming. It felt like there was not enough resolution for me, and was a bit more “vibes” and not enough plot. Which some people love, but turns out it is not my thing.
I read THE DUKE AT HAZARD and found it really hard to rate. The middle just dragged for me before picking up again and having a very satisfying ending.
Really enjoyed AUTOMATIC NOODLE.
I also loved Half a Soul. It took me a little to get into it, but it was worth it. I really enjoyed the unique world (at least it felt unique to me, but I don’t read a lot of books with fae).
