Uh, what? Language and logic (aka coding) are not *hard* to do, just impossible to fake. As someone who learned way back in the Y2K days, I still shudder over kludgy code I wrote when starting out. If the author and I are talking about the same thing, this would be my waking nightmare. YMMV.
@Darlynne: Not to depress you, but my partner is a software engineering and they’ve said ChatGPT has done a lot of lifting for people writing code now. I’ve watched students ask LLMs about errors in their code and it just corrects their work for them.
I don’t know if that’s what happens in the book, but “vibe coding” where people use AI to help them with software development is a real thing.

I’m going through a ‘code’ class on codecademy and it is 80% vibe coding, which isn’t really what I wanted. If I don’t know how to actually code, how am I supposed to recognize when the code assistant hallucinates? Also I’d prefer not to support data centers….
I read the first two books in the Sarah Adams series and they were well done and I enjoyed them except for the whole small town characters sticking their oar into everything. It went from “oh these characters care about each other” to “there’s a line and these people are jumping past it” for me. Also one of the sister characters annoyed the hell out of me (she’s in book 3) so I’ve avoided reading her story. I was at my limit with annoying people thanks to real life at the time but I might get it from the library at some point in the future.
@Darlynne – I’m with you. Assuming that she communicates with this team in person, it’s going to be obvious that she doesn’t know what she’s doing in the first conversation that involves code. Vibe coding doesn’t help if you can’t ask your AI chatbot a question.
Coding aside, data analysis requires math knowledge that is also hard to fake. Unless Annie has a science/math/engineering background, she probably doesn’t know enough math to fake her way through that kind of in person conversation either.
@Caro, I liked the last two books in the Sarah Adams series better than the first two, though the small-town interference stuff did continue. I also was annoyed by that sister but liked how she developed in her story.

Agreed so much about the “so what if she doesn’t know code?” thing. I couldn’t read that book without wanting to throttle the MC every chapter, I think.
And yeah, it is also depressingly realistic. My brother in law is director of AI strategy at an online banking company and he does not know how to code and makes no attempt to learn, because that’s what “his engineers” are for. He’s also just a schmuck who will probably be out of a job before the year is out.
Re Sarah Adams
Beg, Borrow, or Steal was a delight that surprised me. Yes the character is annoying in the first two but Adams somehow made it work and made her lovable and charming.
Haven’t read the fourth yet.
