  • Chasing Cassandra

    Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas

Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99! Ellen reviewed this one and gave it a C+:

Overall, even though I did enjoy reading most of this book, I was left feeling kind of lukewarm due to the stalling plot and not quite satisfying romance. I think if you have been reading and liking the series so far there is plenty to like here, especially if you are interested in spending more time with the characters we have already been introduced to.

    Everything has a price…

Railway magnate Tom Severin is wealthy and powerful enough to satisfy any desire as soon as it arises. Anything—or anyone—is his for the asking. It should be simple to find the perfect wife—and from his first glimpse of Lady Cassandra Ravenel, he’s determined to have her. But the beautiful and quick-witted Cassandra is equally determined to marry for love—the one thing he can’t give.

    Everything except her…

Severin is the most compelling and attractive man Cassandra has ever met, even if his heart is frozen. But she has no interest in living in the fast-paced world of a ruthless man who always plays to win.

When a newfound enemy nearly destroys Cassandra’s reputation, Severin seizes the opportunity he’s been waiting for. As always, he gets what he wants—or does he? There’s one lesson Tom Severin has yet to learn from his new bride:

    Never underestimate a Ravenel.

The chase for Cassandra’s hand may be over. But the chase for her heart has only just begun…

  • The Soldier’s Scoundrel

The Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian

The Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian is $1.99! This is a gay historical romance with class differences, which readers seemed to really love in terms of the pairing. However, other reader mention having some problems with the book’s pacing. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

A scoundrel who lives in the shadows

Jack Turner grew up in the darkness of London’s slums, born into a life of crime and willing to do anything to keep his belly full and his siblings safe. Now he uses the tricks and schemes of the underworld to help those who need the kind of assistance only a scoundrel can provide. His distrust of the nobility runs deep and his services do not extend to the gorgeous high-born soldier who personifies everything Jack will never be.

    A soldier untarnished by vice

After the chaos of war, Oliver Rivington craves the safe predictability of a gentleman’s life-one that doesn’t include sparring with a ne’er-do-well who flouts the law at every turn. But Jack tempts Oliver like no other man has before. Soon his yearning for the unapologetic criminal is only matched by Jack’s pleasure in watching his genteel polish crumble every time they’re together.

Two men only meant for each other

  • Common Goal

    Common Goal by Rachel Reid

Common Goal by Rachel Reid is $1.99! Lara wrote a Lightning Review for this book and gave it a C+:

In its favour, the chemistry between the two main characters is palpable and they’re both genuine, lovely people. On the downside, the conflict was flimsy to start with and grew more tiresome towards the end of the book.

New York Admirals goalie Eric never thought his friends-with-benefits arrangement with much-younger Kyle would leave them both wanting more…

Veteran goaltender Eric Bennett has faced down some of the toughest shooters on the ice, but nothing prepared him for his latest challenge—life after hockey. It’s time to make some big changes, starting with finally dating men for the first time.

Graduate student Kyle Swift moved to New York nursing a broken heart. He’d sworn to find someone his own age to crush on (for once). Until he meets a gorgeous, distinguished silver fox hockey player. Despite their intense physical attraction, Kyle has no intention of getting emotionally involved. He’ll teach Eric a few tricks, have some mutually consensual fun, then walk away.

Eric is more than happy to learn anything Kyle brings to the table. And Kyle never expected their friends-with-benefits arrangement to leave him wanting more. Happily-ever-after might be staring them in the face, but it won’t happen if they’re too stubborn to come clean about their feelings.

Everything they both want is within reach… They just have to be brave enough to grab it.

  • Difficult Women

    Difficult Women by Roxane Gay

Difficult Women by Roxane Gay is $1.99 at Amazon! This could be some sort of leftover Kindle Daily Deal and will poof in an instant. This is a collection of short stories about, as the title suggests, difficult women.

Award-winning author and powerhouse talent Roxane Gay burst onto the scene with An Untamed State and the New York Times bestselling essay collection Bad Feminist (Harper Perennial). Gay returns with Difficult Women, a collection of stories of rare force and beauty, of hardscrabble lives, passionate loves, and quirky and vexed human connection.

The women in these stories live lives of privilege and of poverty, are in marriages both loving and haunted by past crimes or emotional blackmail. A pair of sisters, grown now, have been inseparable ever since they were abducted together as children, and must negotiate the elder sister’s marriage. A woman married to a twin pretends not to realize when her husband and his brother impersonate each other. A stripper putting herself through college fends off the advances of an overzealous customer. A black engineer moves to Upper Michigan for a job and faces the malign curiosity of her colleagues and the difficulty of leaving her past behind. From a girls’ fight club to a wealthy subdivision in Florida where neighbors conform, compete, and spy on each other, Gay delivers a wry, beautiful, haunting vision of modern America reminiscent of Merritt Tierce, Jamie Quatro, and Miranda July.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

While COMMON GOAL can be read as a stand-alone, I do think it helps if you’ve read the previous books in the Game Changer series because characters do recur, including the h&h from this book.

  2. Lisa F says:

The Gay and the Sebastian are the highlights for me here!

  3. Annie Kate says:

The Soldier’s Scoundrel does have a bit of first-book wobbliness, but the dialogue and dynamic between the heroes is delightful. Class commentary via snark and flirting is my jam.

  4. HeatherS says:

I agree with Annie Kate. Yes, “The Soldier’s Scoundrel” does have a bit of first book-itis in terms of pacing at times, but the appealing characters (Oliver + Jack 4evah, Georgie is best) and class differences really make up for it, imho.

This book turned me into a Cat Sebastian fangirl for reals. I love that her characters are overwhelmingly working class folks – yes, there is the occasional genteely impoverished member of lower nobility, but they’re the exception, not the rule.

Cat’s books are a bargain at any price, but often can be found on sale for under $3 in ebook format.

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

I love the Cat Sebastian—I need her to write more because I’ve read her entire backlist at this point.

The Kleypas had a fat-shaming angle to it that I found distressing. It’s the all too typical people tell her she’s fat, but the hero convinces her she’s fine.
