Hide Your Wallet

December’s New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

Lara: I loved the first book in this series, meh for the second, but I’m holding out hope for the third!

Ellen: Like Lara, I loved the 1st but was so-so on the second. But from what we’ve seen of the hero and heroine in the previous installments I’m VERY intrigued.

“A passionately felt stand-alone with an affecting personal story at its center.” – The Washington Post

Winner of the International Latino Book Award, Aya de Leon, returns with a thrilling and timely story of feminism, climate, and corporate justice—as one successful lawyer must decide whether to put everything on the line to right the deep inequities faced in one under-served Bay Area, California community.

Since childhood, Yolanda Vance has forged her desire to escape poverty into a laser-like focus that took her through prep school and Harvard Law. So when her prestigious New York law firm is raided by the FBI, Yolanda turns in her corrupt bosses to save her career—and goes to work for the Bureau. Soon she’s sent undercover at Red, Black, and Green—an African-American “extremist” activist group back in her California college town. They claim a biotech corporation fueled by Pentagon funding is exploiting the neighborhood. But Yolanda is determined to put this assignment in her win column, head back to corporate law, and regain her comfortable life…

Until an unexpected romance opens her heart—and a suspicious death opens her eyes. Menacing dark money forces will do anything to bury Yolanda and the movement. Fueled by memories of who she once was—and what once really mattered most—how can she tell those who’ve come to trust her that she’s been spying? As the stakes escalate, and one misstep could cost her life, Yolanda will have to choose between betraying the cause of her people or invoking the wrath of the country’s most powerful law enforcement agency.

Maya: 1) THAT COVER 2) de León’s Justice Hustlers series was highly recommended to me by a friend of mine and 3) wow does that look like a complicated and engaging story!

  • Fairy Godmothers, Inc.

Fairy Godmothers, Inc. by Saranna DeWylde

    Author: Saranna DeWylde
Released: December 29, 2020 by Zebra Books
    Genre: , ,

First in a magical new series full of edgy and hilarious antics, this is the read you need to finally give your year the fairy-tale ending it deserves! An enchanting story of love, dreams, and second chances—a delightful read for cold winter nights that fans of Christina Lauren, Tessa Bailey, and Kerry Winfrey can’t miss…

If love is the source of all the magic in the universe, and the town of Ever After, Missouri, is the epicenter of enchantment, then the locals are in dire need of a reboot. At least according to resident fairy godmothers Petunia, Jonquil, and Bluebonnet. Their solution? Blow a bit of fairy dust in the direction of those in need of romance…what could possibly go wrong?

    SOME KIND OF AWFUL…
Lucky Fujiki’s first name is a cosmic joke. Her luck is so bad, even the number seven steers clear of her. But when her adorable godmothers ask for a favor, Lucky can’t say no–even if she can already feel the bad juju waiting to strike. And her mission is even worse than she imagined: to promote Ever After as a wedding destination by faking a marriage to her first love and long-time ex, Ransom Payne–he of the Embarrassing Incident that neither of them will ever live down…

    OR ALL KINDS OF WONDERFUL?
Ransom Payne has spent years building an impressive new reputation for himself, and now his godmothers want him to pretend to wed the one girl he’d like most to forget? Sure, weddings in Ever After could be a huge boon for his chocolate business, but risking more up-close-and-personal time with Lucky? Considering the stakes, it’s a curse he’ll have to bear, at the risk of being humiliated–or perhaps, bewitched…

Aarya: I’m really in the mood for frothy, fluffy PNR.

His discovery, and the weakening wards about the city, can only mean one thing: the Traitor is gathering his armies again, and the storms are returning.

Amris has been trapped in dreamless sleep since the final battle raged centuries ago. Now he is awake…and so, it seems, is humanity’s greatest threat. Determined to save the world from being swallowed by the oncoming storm, Amris and the fiercely beautiful Darya must learn to trust each other—and the powerful bond that’s formed between them—as they fight their way through a land swarming with monsters in a last desperate bid to get word back to their allies before it’s too late…

  1. Alexandra says:

Yay! I’ve heard that end-of-December releases aren’t great for books and I’ve no idea if that’s true, but I love them. That week between Christmas and New Years is that weird liminal time when the house is clean, the fridge is stocked with holiday leftovers, company has come and gone and the only thing to do is read. I love it so much!

  2. Annie Kate says:

Ooh, I really enjoyed the first two books in that Kate Bateman series, so I’m stoked to read the third as post-Christmas decompression.

Also “fluffy PNR” is one of my favorite genres! There’s just not enough of it! I love these posts because I inevitably find something super appealing to add to my TBR.

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

Ooh, definitely looking forward to the Cogman and the Bateman. Enjoyed the previous ones in both series.

  4. Elena says:

Oh, I love Isabel Cooper and I’m so glad to see she’s publishing again. I really liked her Engelfield series, and I’m not usually into PNR. I think she’s really under-rated and I suggest reading her.

  5. Lisa F says:

A Spy in the Struggle and Fairy Godmothers Inc are on my TBR pile! I’m still reading Bateman on and off and need to read Cooper again!

  6. […] releases: Smart Bitches (romance), Tor.com […]
