  • The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone

The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicity McLean

RECOMMENDED: The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicity McLean is $1.99! Elyse reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone is one of the more unique thrillers I’ve read in a long time and it sucked me in completely.

‘We lost all three girls that summer. Let them slip away like the words of some half-remembered song and when one came back, she wasn’t the one we were trying to recall to begin with.’

So begins Tikka Molloy’s recount of the summer of 1992 – the summer the Van Apfel sisters, Hannah, the beautiful Cordelia and Ruth – disappear.

Eleven and one-sixth years old, Tikka is the precocious narrator of this fabulously endearing coming-of-age story, set in an eerie Australian river valley suburb with an unexplained stench. The Van Apfel girls vanish from the valley during the school’s ‘Showstopper’ concert, held at the outdoor amphitheatre by the river. While the search for the sisters unites the small community on Sydney’s urban fringe, the mystery of their disappearance remains unsolved forever.

Brilliantly observed, sharp, lively, funny and entirely endearing, this novel is part mystery, part coming-of-age story – and quintessentially Australian. Think The Virgin Suicides meets Jasper Jones meets Picnic at Hanging Rock.

  • The Best Kind of Trouble

The Best Kind of Trouble by Lauren Dane

The Best Kind of Trouble by Lauren Dane is $2.99 at select vendors! This is book 1 of the Hurley Brothers series, and is about a former rock star and a librarian in a small town who once upon a time had a serious fling with him – which she’d prefer he didn’t bring up. (That never works out the way they want, right?) This book has a 3.8-star average.

She has complete control…and he’s determined to take it away

A librarian in the small town of Hood River, Natalie Clayton’s world is very nearly perfect. After a turbulent childhood and her once-wild ways, life is now under control. But trouble has a way of turning up unexpectedly—especially in the tall, charismatically sexy form of Paddy Hurley….

And Paddy is the kind of trouble that Natalie has a taste for.

Even after years of the rock-and-roll lifestyle, Paddy never forgot the two wickedly hot weeks he once shared with Natalie. Now he wants more…even if it means tempting Natalie and her iron-grip control. But there’s a fine line between well-behaved and misbehaved—and the only compromise is between the sheets!

  • A Passage of Stars

A Passage of Stars by Kate Elliot

A Passage of Stars by Kate Elliot is $1.99 at Amazon! This is the first in a trilogy that was originally published in 1990. It’s since been republished with a new cover. According to reviews, there also seems to have some romantic elements. Have you read it? Do you think it holds up?

In the crackling first book of Kate Elliott’s Highroad trilogy, strong-spirited Lily Ransome leaves her home planet—and the life she’s always known—to rescue an abducted friend

Willful as well as physically brave, Lily Ransome is dissatisfied by the options available to her on Unruli: She can either join her family’s lucrative mining business or begin procreating. When Heredes, her beloved martial arts instructor, tutor, and father figure, is kidnapped by alien bounty hunters, Lily spurns the expectations of her home planet and ventures into space to find him. Befriending a persecuted minority class of humans called the Ridani, she becomes involved in an intergalactic rebellion and finds love in an unexpected place—as well as true strength within herself.

A Passage of Stars is the first book of the Highroad trilogy, which continues with Revolution’s Shore and The Price of Ransom.

  • The Derby Girl

The Derby Girl by Tamara Morgan

The Derby Girl by Tamara Morgan is 99c! This is an opposites attract romance between a derby girl (whose derby name is Honey Badger!) and a doctor. Readers loved how different the characters seemed, but some say that nothing really happened in the book. This is the second book in the Getting Physical series and you can grab all three books for around $3.

Roller derby girl Gretchen “Honey Badger” Badgerton lives in the moment, no apologies. Like every woman in Pleasant Park with a pulse, she finds Dr. Jared Fine irresistible, but she’s taken by surprise when her unattainable new neighbor asks her out.

On paper, Jared is the perfect man: gorgeous, wealthy and charitable. But his golden image is just that, and opening an upstate practice is a welcome chance to start a new life. When Gretchen stops to help him with a flat tire, he’s intrigued by her feisty attitude—and her sexy body art. There’s something refreshing about being with a take-charge woman who doesn’t expect him to be anything but himself.

Though Gretchen is hesitant to shatter Jared’s “bad girl” illusion of her, she has to face facts: she’s fallen for the good doctor. She’s used to putting everyone else’s needs before hers, but as their relationship heats up, can she handle having someone take care of her for a change?

    I LOVED Derby Girl!

  2. ReadKnitSnark says:

I just want to point out that Paddy Hurley is a *current* rock star in Lauren Dane’s THE BEST KIND OF TROUBLE, not former. (Because I’m feeling the need to pick nits.)

That said, I enjoyed the book. Great friends, loving family, pet pig belonging to brother, hot smex, TRIGGER WARNING for non-local toxic family.

  3. Georgina says:

I greatly enjoyed The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone. It captures Australian suburban living in the early ’90s in a way that I’ve seen few stories do, and the writing is beautiful. Those who like everything to be neatly wrapped up at the end may be disappointed, though.
