But the handsome railroad engineer from New York isn’t at all what she expected. He’s kind, gentle…and tempting enough to make her wonder what a second chance at love might be worth.

A self-acknowledged black sheep, Roen Shepard knows what it means to feel alone. Recognizing a kindred spirit in the reserved widow whose fascinating blue-green eyes have seen too much, and charmed by the warmth of her ready-made family, the two begin an unlikely friendship.

When a complication from his past follows him to Frost Falls, Roen proposes a mad scheme to protect the new life he’s built and keep close the stubborn woman he’s accidentally fallen for–a marriage of convenience. But Lily has secrets of her own, and the closer he gets to uncovering them, the more he comes to realize that the only truth that matters is the secret to unlocking her heart.

Sarah: This is not the first in the series, but so far I’m all good. I am very curious about the heroine, who seems like she takes exactly zero crap from anyone.

Released: June 11, 2019 by Avon
    Genre: ,
    Series: Hot and Hammered #1

New York Times bestseller Tessa Bailey launches a super sexy new series featuring the blue collar men who work for a HGTV-esque house flipping business.

After an injury ends Travis Ford’s major league baseball career, he returns home to start over. He just wants to hammer out his frustrations at his new construction gig and forget all about his glory days. But he can’t even walk through town without someone recapping his greatest hits. The grumpy, bear of a man working for her family’s house flipping business is a far cry from the charming sports star she used to know. But a moody scowl doesn’t scare her and Georgie’s determined to show Travis he’s more than a pretty face and a batting average, even if it means putting her feelings aside to be “just friends.”

Travis wants to brood in peace. But the girl he used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman who makes him feel whole again. And he wants her. So damn bad. Except Georgie’s off limits and he knows he can’t give her what she deserves. But she’s becoming the air he breathes and Travis can’t stay away, no matter how hard he tries…

Amanda: I’m a ride or die Bailey reader.

  • Man of the Year

Man of the Year by Caroline Louise Walker

    Author: Caroline Louise Walker
Released: June 11, 2019 by Gallery Books
    Genre:

Beware the Man of the Year. You praise him, but you don’t know him at all. Caroline Louise Walker’s debut psychological thriller delves into the paranoid mind of a narcissist who suspects his wife is cheating on him—for fans of Herman Koch’s The Dinner and Shari Lapel’s The Couple Next Door.

Dr. Robert Hayden has the perfect life. He just won Sag Harbor’s Man of the Year, after all. So when his son’s troubled college roommate needs a place to stay for the summer, Robert generously opens his home to the kid, only to find that his new houseguest is getting a little too close with his wife—and the good doctor’s veneer begins to crack. His pathological narcissism comes to the fore, and Robert sets up a scheme to get the boy to leave his home.

But when the boy shows up dead on their property, all the little lies Robert has told here and there start to mount up into something worse. He should be respected—he’s an impressive man, after all—but suddenly his beautiful life is looking more and more peculiar. His wife won’t admit to an affair. His son is in mourning. And Robert is becoming suspect number one.

Filled with electric unpredictability and offering an in-depth look at the destructive consequences of excessive narcissism, Man of the Year races along at a breathless pace before concluding with a wicked twist that you won’t see coming.

Elyse: I’m intrigued by this book which explores male privilege and toxic masculinity, but it’s told from the perspective of the villain, so I’m not sure how it will work for me.

Unfortunately, Natalie has no desire to help them try to turn things around–she resents the local shopkeepers for leaving her alone to take care of her agoraphobic mother when she was growing up. But with the support of a surprising new friend and a budding romance, Natalie starts to realize that maybe her neighbors really have been there for her all along.

Amanda: I’ve heard there’s some food-based magical realism in this and that’s totally my jam, given my love of Sarah Addison Allen.

  • The Girl in Red

The Girl in Red by Christina Henry

    Author: Christina Henry
Released: June 18, 2019 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,

From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a postapocalyptic take on the perennial classic “Little Red Riding Hood”…about a woman who isn’t as defenseless as she seems.

It’s not safe for anyone  alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn’t look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago.

There are worse threats in the woods than the things that stalk their prey at night. Sometimes, there are men. Men with dark desires, weak wills, and evil intents. Men in uniform with classified information, deadly secrets, and unforgiving orders. And sometimes, just sometimes, there’s something worse than all of the horrible people and vicious beasts combined.

Red doesn’t like to think of herself as a killer, but she isn’t about to let herself get eaten up just because she is a woman alone in the woods…

Amanda: I read Henry’s reimagining of Alice in Wonderland and I’m so curious about this one.

An invitation from Andy to stay in Maine for a few months seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button.

When Dean moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken–and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. But before they can find out what might lie ahead, they’ll have to wrestle a few demons: the bonds they’ve broken, the plans they’ve changed, and the secrets they’ve kept. They’ll need a lot of help, but in life, as in baseball, there’s always a chance–right up until the last out.

Sarah: I read an early, early draft of this book, and could not put it down. I’m very excited to read the book in its finished form.

Fleeing from a shattering scandal, she has a new name, a chance at a new beginning, and a breathtaking new view: Hansen Rye. It’s hard not to crush on Whitaker’s hottest handyman. At six-foot-three and all kinds of fine, he’s also intensely private—and the attraction between them soon simmers dangerously out of control.

…or a private trap for two lovers?

After a devastating family tragedy, Hansen finds the pebbled shores of the faraway island to be an ideal refuge. Letting down his guard for the sexy, impulsive Tessa is an unexpected pleasure. But there’s another newcomer to Whitaker. He’s no stranger to Hansen. And when he’s murdered, the crime casts a threatening shadow. As suspicion falls on Hansen, all his secrets are about to collide with Tessa’s. Now the pasts they were determined to outrun are catching up to them. • Kingdom of Exiles

Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym Martineau

    Author: Maxym Martineau
Released: June 25, 2019 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
    Genre: , , ,
    Series: The Beast Charmer #1

Assassin’s Creed meets Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in this gripping, epic fantasy romance trilogy.

My heart wasn’t part of the deal when I bargained for my life,
But assassins so rarely keep their word.

Exiled Charmer Leena Edenfrell is running out of time. Empty pockets forced her to sell her beloved magical beasts-an offense punishable by death-and now there’s a price on her head. With the realm’s most talented murderer-for-hire nipping at her heels, Leena makes Noc an offer he can’t refuse: powerful mythical creatures in exchange for her life.

Plagued by a curse that kills everyone he loves, Noc agrees to Leena’s terms in hopes of finding a cure. Never mind that the dark magic binding the assassin’s oath will eventually force him to choose between Leena’s continued survival…and his own.

In a game of trust and half-lies, only one thing can be certain: traps capture more than beasts and ensnared hearts are impossible to untangle.

Amanda: You can bet your ass I’m reading this fantasy romance.

Elyse: I got this book at BLCon and I’m intrigued by the idea of heroine who controls magical beasts.

  • Rogue Most Wanted

Rogue Most Wanted by Janna MacGregor

    Author: Janna MacGregor
Released: June 25, 2019 by St. Martin's Paperbacks
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Cavensham Heiresses #5

There’s one creed all Cavensham men subscribe to: they fall in love completely, and decidedly. But what happens when the woman you fall in love with is already your wife? Rogue Most Wanted is the next book in the sparkling, romantic Cavensham Heiress series by Janna MacGregor.

    SHE NEEDS TO MARRY HIM

Miss Theodora Worth needs to marry fast in order to keep the land within her family. It’s been her heart and home for years, and she’ll not lose it to anyone. There’s just one problem—as a woman who was raised in isolation by her grandfather, she’s completely incapable of pouring a cup of tea, never mind wooing a man. She’ll need a little matchmaking help from her sprightly next-door neighbor in order to find a convenient husband…

SO THEY’LL FORM A FAKE ENGAGEMENT
Lord William Cavensham’s heart was broken years ago, and since that day he vowed to never love again. But his spirited Great Aunt Stella has demanded he marry, or he’ll not inherit a single penny from her. And she’s got just the woman in mind—her beautiful and completely hapless next-door neighbor, Thea…

BUT PERHAPS IT’S NOT SO FAKE AFTER ALL

Thea and Will agree there’s no sense in really, truly marrying each other. Will wholeheartedly believes he’s incapable of love, and Thea refuses to live out the rest of her days married but lonely. They agree to fake an engagement until the week is out—and in the meantime, Will vows to help Thea find the man of her dreams. But the more he helps her, the more Will believes Thea might be the one to mend his broken heart. And despite meeting scores of suitors to help save her land, Will may be the rogue Thea wants the most after all…

Elyse: This book has a marriage of convenience/matchmaking plot and I love both those tropes.

  1. MirandaB says:

Speaking of covers, I love the dress on the Teeth in the Mist cover.

  2. Ren Benton says:

I had the Martineau book on my list, too. Also:

All of Us with Wings by Michelle Ruiz Keiel on June 18. This “YA fantasy debut about love, found family, and healing is an ode to post-punk San Francisco through the eyes of a Mexican-American girl.”

Five Midnights by Ann Dávila Cardinal on June 4. A thriller “based on the el Cuco myth set against the backdrop of modern day Puerto Rico.”

  3. Ren Benton says:

    *Keil

My copy-paste game is weak this early in the morning.

  4. Sandra says:

Goodman is an auto-buy for me. I’ve been waiting for this book for months. The heroine of this book is a secondary character in A Touch of Flame, so if you read that first, you’ll have some of her backstory. Of course, then you have to read A Touch of Frost first, to get that hero’s backstory. Just start at the beginning and read all of them. You won’t regret it.

Just TW for some people. Goodman works in family services IRL, and disfunctional and abusive family relationships show up in her books.

  5. DonnaMarie says:

This month is mostly all about new Nalini Singh and the new Kat Halloway mystery, but there was one other book on the radar.

Kelley Armstrong has a new thriller, Wherever She Goes, coming out. I’ve been enjoying her Rockton series a lot, so I’m pretty interested in this one – even if it doesn’t appear to have even a hint of romance.

Now I have a couple baseball players and a remote island suspense to add to the list.

  6. Maile says:

If you’re into M/M mystery, the romance anthology ‘Footsteps in the Dark’ was released today – 8 novellas from some of my faves, including Josh Lanyon, Nicole Kimberling and Dal MacLean.

  7. Lisa F says:

The new Goodman, sadly, isn’t up to her usual snuff, but is still readable.

I WANT TO READ NATALIE TAN’S BOOK OF LUCK AND FORTUNE SO BADLY. SO BADLY!

  8. HeatherS says:

I read “Ayesha At Last” and really enjoyed it. It’s definitely got some influence from “Pride and Prejudice” in the plot and it is deliberate. Instead of one being rich and the other being “gentry but not rich”, their conflict is based more on religious devoutness – that is, the appearance of it. He thinks that “real, devout” Muslims can only be one way, while she is another way.

There is a mistaken identity ruse that had me wishing the character had been more honest and forthright and not let the other go on thinking they were someone else for a long time. Also, the Wickham character made himself out to be super smarmy and I just couldn’t buy it and handwave away his behavior when he supposedly redeemed himself.

  9. Leigh Kramer says:

I can confirm The Friend Zone is AMAZING! I also finished Kingdom Of Exiles last night and loved it. I’m looking forward to The Chai Factor and Ayesha At Last!

  10. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Two pre-ordered HPs hit my kindle this morning: Caitlin Crews’s THE UNTAMED BILLIONAIRE’S INNOCENT BRIDE (according to Crews’s forward, this is her 50th published HP) and Clare Connelly’s SHOCK HEIR FOR THE KING. Next week brings Willow Winters’s A SINGLE TOUCH. I read the first book, A SINGLE GLANCE, a few months ago—but when it ended on a cliffhanger, I decided to wait and read A SINGLE KISS (the second book) and A SINGLE TOUCH together. Crime family romance—very dark—but I love the stories. I don’t have much else in my “Upcoming Dates” file, but I’ve got a tbr of Everest proportions and, now that school is out, I hope to put a dent in it. (I say that every summer, but hope springs eternal….)

  11. Darlynne says:

A TOUCH OF FOREVER: Did anyone else read this sentence the way I did? “When a complication from his past follows him to Frost[bite] Falls …” No, just me then, and Moose and Squirrel.

  12. DiscoDollyDeb says:

    @Darlynne: And Boris…and Natasha…Mr. Peabody…and Sherman…

/some of these young whippersnappers here won’t have a clue.

  13. KateB says:

    My preorders are:

    – HITHER PAGE by Cat Sebastian (June 18) – m/m historical & the first in a new series, about a “jaded spy and shell shocked country doctor [who] team up to solve a murder in postwar England.”

    – THE LADY’S GUIDE TO CELESTIAL MECHANICS by Olivia Waite (June 25) – f/f historical about a translator and a widow and French astronomy!

  14. SusanE says:

@ DiscoDollyDeb and Darlynne: Don’t forget the Fractured Fairy Tales!

  15. HeatherS says:

“The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics” by Olivia Waite will be out towards the end of the month. F/F romance + astronomy!

“Hither Page” by Cat Sebastian will be out June 18. She calls it “Agatha Christie, but gay!”.

  16. HeatherS says:

@KateB: Are you reading my mind? 😀

  17. Katie says:

@DonnaMarie: I love Kelley Armstrong, so Wherever She Goes is on hold at my library. The cover copy doesn’t mention romance, but I’ve read nearly all of her adult and YA books, and there’s always a romantic subplot. So there might be one, but maybe with less real estate than usual for her? Sounds interesting either way.

Also very excited for the new Nalini Singh this month. Singh has a thriller (no fantasy/paranormal elements) coming out in December that I also want right now called A Madness of Sunshine, for those I want to look into that and wait impatiently for six months.

  18. Cristie says:

@ KateB & HeatherS-how the heck had I not heard about this Cat Sebastian book?! It sounds like everything I never knew I always wanted. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Off to pre-order now.

  19. Oh, “Rogue Most Wanted” !!
Janna MacGregor is an auto buy for me! <3

    Love this series.

  20. Katherine McCorry says:

One clicked the new Jennifer Ashley book so fast. Thanks for the links!

  21. I cannot wait for the new Jo Goodman. I have so much love for her books!
