RECOMMENDED: Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai is $3.99! This is the notorious cat pee book. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read Elyse’s review:
I do not think I can possibly endorse Wrong to Need You more strongly than “it will make you forget you’re sitting in cat pee,” but if I could, I would, because this book is everything wonderful. It’s angsty and cathartic and sexy…
There are a couple of romances in the novel–one a love triangle but not an obnoxious one, and one that made my jaw literally drop. There’s sex too, but it happens off stage. The romances are secondary and serve to drive the plot, and aren’t the main focus of it.
Three Dark Crowns is fun. It’s dark and twisted, it’s all about lady-power, and it’s got a heroine who wears a poisonous snake for a bracelet. I just wish the sequel was out.
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Definitely check out the rest of the sales. There are romances, historical fiction, scifi, and fantasy! Many readers loved this memoir, but warn that the audio version is a little too dramatic.
These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas is $2.99! I mentioned this book in the February 2016 Hide Your Wallet post and it was described as Jane Austen meets X-Men! Many readers loved the main character. However, there seem to be some complaints about the ending and its lack of resolution, but that could be because it’s part of a series.
The Negotiator by Avery Flynn is 99c! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at select vendors. Readers loved the ball-busting heroine and the fake relationship element, but some found the romance and its characters to be superficial. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
Intercepting the Chef by Rachel Goodman is $1.99! I was excited about this book in this month’s Hide Your Wallet post because it blends two of my catnips: an athlete and a foodie character. Readers thought this was a great start to a new series, but found that the heroine was difficult to like at times.
RECOMMENDED: Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at other sites, so we’re starting off strong! Elyse loved this book and how it helped her deal with chronic pain. She gave it an A:
Furiously Happy is a rare book, a combination of ridiculous humor and poignant reflection. I think anyone who has suffered from a stigmatized illness will identify with Lawson’s honest, sometimes heartbreaking, description of her own pain. It’s still an uplifting book though, and that’s important. Lawson believes in celebrating small victories and quiet bravery. I get that. Sometimes you’re proud because hey, you got out of bed and showered today but you can’t post that on Facebook because other people don’t get it (and you’ll get shitty comments “Wow, I trained for my half marathon and worked 12 hours.” NOBODY CARES, GARY).
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel is $2.99! This is the story of Henry VIII’s court from the perspective of Thomas Cromwell. This is the first book in Mantel’s series, and it was a HUGE word of mouth phenomenon when it came out, but some readers mentioned that had trouble getting into the writing. Have you read this one? Did you love it or hate it?
This month, your wallets get a tiny bit of a reprieve, since this list of upcoming releases isn’t as long as previous months. However, a ton of books come out toward the end of May, so budget accordingly! Also, a lot of us are reading backlist titles to whittle down our TBR piles.
Blitzing Emily by Julie Brannagh is 99c and is the first book in her Love and Football series. It also looks like the rest of the series is on sale at varying prices. This is a contemporary romance between an NFL player and an opera singer, with a pretend engagement started by a concussion. With a 3.8-star rating, readers thought this was a great debut novel, though some said the pacing could have used a jumpstart.
It’s 2016 everyone! Hopefully, your year is starting out better than mine, which has essentially been a drunken version of Groundhog Day with a significant amount of smudged eyeliner. Now, I’m not big on making resolutions, but one thing I’d like to do this year is help maintain my friendships and foster new ones. A lot of us met in grad school through our publishing program and we’re all very bookish people. The idea of … Continue reading Covers & Cocktails: High Class Hunch Punch→
