February’s New Releases

It’s a big month for new releases here at SBTB, and I know that I had to personally cut down on the list of books I wanted to talk about. It’s also a very front-heavy month, so plan those budgets accordingly.

These are just a few of the books we’re excited about for February. What are yours? Which February titles are at the top of your to-buy list?

Every time he has to rescue Delaney from herself, his heart and his hormones both go into overdrive. But he owes it to Delaney’s sister to keep an eye on her. He’s got some experience with that after spending so much time at it back in high school…

  • The Queen of the Night

The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee

    Author: Alexander Chee
Released: February 2, 2016 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
    Genre: ,

From a writer praised by Junot Díaz as “the fire, in my opinion, and the light,” a mesmerizing novel that follows one woman’s rise from circus rider to courtesan to world-renowned diva

Lilliet Berne is a sensation of the Paris Opera, a legendary soprano with every accolade except an original role, every singer’s chance at immortality. When one is finally offered to her, she realizes with alarm that the libretto is based on a hidden piece of her past. Only four could have betrayed her: one is dead, one loves her, one wants to own her. And one, she hopes, never thinks of her at all.

As she mines her memories for clues, she recalls her life as an orphan who left the American frontier for Europe and was swept up into the glitzy, gritty world of Second Empire Paris. In order to survive, she transformed herself from hippodrome rider to courtesan, from empress’s maid to debut singer, all the while weaving a complicated web of romance, obligation, and political intrigue.

Featuring a cast of characters drawn from history, The Queen of the Night follows Lilliet as she moves ever closer to the truth behind the mysterious opera and the role that could secure her reputation — or destroy her with the secrets it reveals.

Amanda says: Historic Paris! An opera singer! Scandal!

Every relationship involves two people…plus their pasts. And as much as she enjoys her fling with Luke, when London learns about his past—more specifically, who’s in it—everything becomes the brand of complicated she strives to avoid. • I’ll See You in Paris

I’ll See You in Paris by Michelle Gable

    Author: Michelle Gable
Released: February 9, 2016 by Thomas Dunne Books
    Genre: , ,

After losing her fiancé in the Vietnam War, nineteen-year-old Laurel Haley takes a job in England, hoping the distance will mend her shattered heart. Laurel expects the pain might lessen but does not foresee the beguiling man she meets or that they’ll go to Paris, where the city’s magic will take over and alter everything Laurel believes about love.

Thirty years later, Laurel’s daughter Annie is newly engaged and an old question resurfaces: who is Annie’s father and what happened to him? Laurel has always been vague about the details and Annie’s told herself it doesn’t matter. But with her impending marriage, Annie has to know everything. Why won’t Laurel tell her the truth?

The key to unlocking Laurel’s secrets starts with a mysterious book about an infamous woman known as the Duchess of Marlborough. Annie’s quest to understand the Duchess, and therefore her own history, takes her from a charming hamlet in the English countryside, to a decaying estate kept behind barbed wire, and ultimately to Paris where answers will be found at last.

Sarah says: Cautiously curious about this one, which mixes multiple storylines in several time periods. Not sure if it has an HEA, though. I tried Gable’s first book, The Paris Apartment, but the ending didn’t work for me.

Douglas is obviously not a candidate, despite his good looks. Yet as work forces them to get closer, they discover there’s far more to each other than meets the eye–and that two actually work better than one–on and off the job…

    Sarah says: Post office romance!

I’m looking forward to Jane and the Waterloo Map by Stephanie Barrons and Calamity by Brandon Sanderson!

  2. And CS Pacat’s Kings Rising comes out on February 2!

  3. SandyCo says:

I’ve been waiting for “Two Cuts Darker” by Joely Sue Burkhart ever since I read “One Cut Deeper” in May of last year. These are dark books with some pretty over the top BDSM scenes, but I always believed that Charlie would take care of and protect Ranay, even from himself. “Two Cuts Darker” is about Charlie’s brother, and it also continues Charlie and Ranay’s story. (I love fiction, because you can spend time with people you would absolutely run the other way from in real life!)

  4. Judy W. says:

Hey! The final in the Captive Prince trilogy is supposed to be out this week. It seems like we waited forever to get this story and I am excited to get my hands on it.

  5. Kings Rising by CS Pacat!! We love this series so so hard!! The final book in the series is out 2/2, and we are both obsessed. (Lauren has read it already and it’s mothertrucking brilliant)

  6. Julia aka mizzelle says:

V.E. Schwab’s A Gathering of Shadows comes out at the end of the month! Second book in her alternate London series.

Also possibly waiting hard on the Romain book. *hides all the horse books from her childhood*

  7. Amanda Blair says:

Oh man, I have been working my way through the Vorkosigan books for years, but the Cordelia books are in my top 5 favorite books ever, and I havd read them a ton. So depressed to find out Aral is dead in the latest ones.

  8. lorenet says:

Just finished Loving Eleanor by Susan Wittig Albert (of the China Bayles mysteries). I loved it.

  9. I am going so broke this month

  10. Crystal says:

I too have much love here for A Gathering of Shadows. And Amazon was nice enough to remind me that I’ve already preordered Salt To The Sea by Ruta Sepetys.

  11. Connie says:

Amanda I just finished Cordelia’s book and it is different than the others, but really lovely! Cordelia gets peace and her HEA!

  12. CelineB says:

Well I have to read Packing Heat. I worked for the post office for nine years, although in data entry so a completely different environment than you usually think of for the post office. Still I have a lot of friends who are carriers or who have worked in the plants and retail stores.

  13. LML says:

What an intriguing list. Thanks, SB Amanda.

  14. Ren says:

Can’t hear anything over the sound of Captive Prince 3 coming out tomorrow. Literally, I tried to read the list but it’s just… Captive Prince 3 is out tomorrow. I’m going to just, idk, bookmark this and come back to it once I’m less obsessed, or something like that.

  15. Darien Gould says:

Cordelia!! Gentleman Jole is already on reserve at the library….I am only fourth on the list so I expect to get my Vorkosigan fix soon…

  16. MissP says:

Kings Rising kings rising KINGS RISING, seriously it’s the only thing I can think about.

  17. Maz says:

I’m SO EXCITED about KINGS RISING (Captive Prince, Book 3) that I don’t even mind having to go dark on social media for fear of spoilers (starting tonight until I finish the book). FWIW, I’ve been waiting 6 years and change for Book 3 so I’m super nervous about how everything will end while, at the same time, can’t believe that Book 3 is actually done!

Another book I’m looking forward to is Strong Signal by Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell. It features a guy in the military who is also a gamer who meets a fellow gamer and then shenanigans ensue. I think it’s due to drop on February 15th on Kindle only. I’m such a huge fan of Santino’s books that I will actually go ahead and get the kindle app on my tablet and read it. LOL!

  18. Heather S says:

I already have a paperback copy of King’s Rising – bought it last week at work (I work at a big chain bookstore). Apparently the on-sale date wasn’t strict. It’s sitting pretty on my shelf at home right now.

  19. DonnaMarie says:

I’ll give the love to Christina Lauren. “Wicked Sexy Liar” is my must read this month. Since I’m #1 on the reserve list, I anticipate a binge read in the near future.

  20. bev says:

All I can think about is King’s Rising. Hope it lives up to the wait. But some up there I want to take a closer look at.

  21. Quidnunc says:

Megan Derr’s Tournament of Losers comes out 2/10 – looks fun.
