Contemporary Romances with Neighbors, Brainy Heroines, & More!

  • Blitzing Emily

    Blitzing Emily by Julie Brannagh

Blitzing Emily by Julie Brannagh is 99c and is the first book in her Love and Football series. It also looks like the rest of the series is on sale at varying prices. This is a contemporary romance between an NFL player and an opera singer, with a pretend engagement started by a concussion. With a 3.8-star rating, readers thought this was a great debut novel, though some said the pacing could have used a jumpstart.

All’s fair in Love and Football…

Emily Hamilton doesn’t trust men. She’s much more comfortable playing the romantic lead in front of a packed house onstage than in her own life. So when NFL star and alluring ladies’ man Brandon McKenna acts as her personal white knight, she has no illusions that he’ll stick around. However, a misunderstanding with the press throws them together in a fake engagement that yields unexpected (and breathtaking) benefits.

Every time Brandon calls her “Sugar,” Emily almost believes he’s playing for keeps—not just to score. Can she let down her defenses and get her own happily ever after?

  • The Troublemaker Next Door

The Troublemaker Next Door by Marie Harte

The Troublemaker Next Door by Marie Harte is 99c at Amazon and Google:Play! I thought I had featured this book before because the cover seems so familiar and it’s on my Goodreads TBR list, but maybe I should have my coffee first. This is an opposites attract romance between a plumber and an interior designer. Readers loved the banter, but wished the heroine wasn’t so tightly wound. Have you read this one?

    SHE’S SWORN OFF MEN
It’s been the day from hell for Maddie. Instead of offering a promotion, her boss made a pass. She quit, then got dumped by her lukewarm boyfriend. As the fiery redhead has a foul-mouthed meltdown, her green-eyed neighbor Flynn McCauley stands in her kitchen…completely captivated.

UNTIL HE THROWS A WRENCH INTO HER PLANS
He was just there to fix the sink as a favor. He’s not into relationships. She’s done with idiots. But where there are friends…sometimes there are benefits. And sometimes the boy next door might be just what you need at the end of every day.

    INTRODUCING…THE McCAULEY BROTHERS
Welcome to the rough-and-tumble McCauley family, a tight-knit band of four bachelor brothers who work hard, drink beer, and relentlessly tease each other. When three independent women move in next door, all hell breaks loose.

  • Temporarily Yours

    Temporarily Yours by Diane Alberts

Temporarily Yours by Diane Alberts is 99c! This is a contemporary category romance with fake relationship between a Marine hero and a heroine who likes to math on the regular. Some reviewers warn of insta-love, but others recommend this book if you’re looking for a quick read that’s low on angst!

A sexy category romance from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…

This marine’s the perfect hoax…if she doesn’t fall for him first.

Stats whiz Kayla Moriarity knows her way around numbers and algorithms. Men, on the other hand, are unsolvable equations. Now Kayla’s en route to her sister’s wedding—alone and without the fictional boyfriend she invented for her family. Fortunately, her plane comes complete with complimentary cocktails and a ridiculously hot ex-marine in the seat beside her. And that’s all it takes for Kayla’s inhibitions to go sailing out the airlock…

Cooper Shillings has soft spot for people in trouble, but he certainly wasn’t expecting to land in it himself—and definitelynot while getting naughty mid-air with a sexy southern belle. When he hears Kayla’s predicament, however, he offers his services as a stand-in boyfriend. After all, he’s heading overseas soon…and how could he refuse a little no-strings wickedness?

It’s the perfect plan. And all Kayla has to do is ensure her family falls for the ultimate bluff, without falling for it—and Cooper—in the process…

  • Better When He’s Bad

Better When He’s Bad by Jay Crownover

Better When He’s Bad by Jay Crownover is $2.99! This is the first book in Crownover’s Welcome to the Point new adult series. A lot of her heroes tend to be tattooed bad boys, which (personally) is right up my catnip alley. The heroine is also the half-sister of the hero’s BFF. Readers loved the heroine and her sense of independence, though there were a few who had a hard time finding the chemistry between the characters. It has a 4-star rating on GR.

    Welcome to the Point.

    There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

  1. Mara says:

“Blitzing Emily” did have some weird pacing & voice issues, which I chalked up to a debut novel issue. I liked it enough that whenever the sequels are free or $.99 I get them. Cuz you know… sports!

  2. Darlynne says:

Elyse’s gargoyle review sent me looking for CE Murphy’s HEART OF STONE, the first in her Negotiator series, which is $1.99 at Amazon right now. And I also saw that URBAN SHAMAN, the first in the Walker Papers, is on sale for .99. I recommend both books/series, UF with romance.

  3. Tori says:

I agree with the Blitzing Emily pacing issues. Plus, the whole transition where they go from fake engagement to feelings…well, there wasn’t any. I even checked to make sure I somehow hadn’t skipped a chap or two, but it just seemed like *real feelings* happened very abruptly.

  4. Vasha says:

Also K.J. Charles’s A Seditious Affair for 0.99 today. Well worth it for a historical m/m. The setup: one’s a radical, one is in charge of pursuing radicals for a repressive government… They both have firm principles that you’d think would make them completely unable to talk to each other. They do, arguing fiercely and fairly.

  5. Jill-Marie says:

Hmmm … that was a short sale! Just went to buy “The Troublemaker Next Door” and Amazon shows it at $3.67.

  6. ChatEbooks says:

These books sound interesting, although I’ve only read Jay Crownover’s books. Will definitely add these to my to-read list (taking into consideration Blitzy Emily reviews here). ChatEbooks posted: https://www.chatebooks.com/blog-How-to-Write-a-Romance-Novel-The-5-Clichs-Authors-Should-Avoid
