Lucky Day
RECOMMENDED: Lucky Day by Chuck Tingle is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this and gave it an A:
…its X-Files/Welcome to Nightvale sensibility and musings on existential vs nihilistic philosophies really hit the spot for me. I even liked the fact that what seems like a potential romance turns out to be something else.
“An existential masterwork that, like life, is equal parts atrocity and delights.”—Olivie Blake, New York Times bestselling author of Masters of Death
Lucky Day is the latest from Chuck Tingle, USA Today bestselling author of Camp Damascus and Bury Your Gays, where one woman must go up against horrifying odds to save the world.
Four years ago, an unthinkable disaster occurred. In what was later known as the Low-Probability Event, eight million people were killed in a single day, each of them dying in improbable, bizarre strangled by balloon ropes, torn apart by exploding manhole covers, attacked by a chimpanzee wielding a typewriter. A day of freak accidents that proved anything is possible, no matter the odds. Luck is real now, and it’s not always good.
Vera, a former statistics and probability professor, lost everything that day, and she still struggles to make sense of the unbelievable catastrophe. To her, the LPE proved that the God of Order is dead and nothing matters anymore.
When Special Agent Layne shows up on Vera’s doorstep, she learns he’s investigating a suspiciously—and statistically impossibly—lucky casino. He needs her help to prove the casino’s success is connected to the deaths of millions, and it’s Vera’s last chance to make sense of a world that doesn’t.
Because what’s happening in Vegas isn’t staying there, and she’s the only thing that stands between the world and another deadly improbability.

Funny You Should Ask
Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman is $1.99! This one has been recommended on several podcasts we’ve done with other romance authors. I remember this being shelved as fiction in some bookstores, so I’ve also been hesitant to pick it up as a romance. Any thoughts?
Then. Twenty-something writer Chani Horowitz is stuck. While her former MFA classmates are nabbing high-profile book deals, all she does is churn out puff pieces. Then she’s hired to write a profile of movie star Gabe Parker: her number one celebrity crush and the latest James Bond. All Chani wants to do is keep her cool and nail the piece. But what comes next proves to be life changing in ways she never saw coming, as the interview turns into a whirlwind weekend that has the tabloids buzzing—and Chani getting closer to Gabe than she had planned.
Now. Ten years later, after a brutal divorce and a healthy dose of therapy, Chani is back in Los Angeles as a successful writer with the career of her dreams. Except that no matter what new essay collection or online editorial she’s promoting, someone always asks about The Profile. It always comes back to Gabe. So when his PR team requests that they reunite for a second interview, she wants to say no. She wants to pretend that she’s forgotten about the time they spent together. But the truth is that Chani wants to know if those seventy-two hours were as memorable to Gabe as they were to her. And so . . . she says yes.
Alternating between their first meeting and their reunion a decade later, this deliciously irresistible novel will have you hanging on until the last word.

A Kiss of Shadows
A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton is $1.99! This is book one in the Merry Gentry series and I’ve been outspoken about how much this series was a formative read for me. It’s coming to an end soon and they’re doing some repackaging to appeal to the romantasy/Why Choose crowd, which is smart. Would I recommend it? Honestly, hard to say.
My name is Meredith Gentry, but of course it’s not my real name. I dare not even whisper my true name after dark for fear that one hushed word will travel over the night winds to the soft ear of my aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness. She wants me dead. I don’t even know why…
I fled the high court of Faerie three years ago and have been in hiding ever since. As Merry Gentry, I am a private investigator for the Grey Detective Agency: Supernatural Problems, Magical Solutions. My magical skills, scorned at the courts of Faerie, are valued in the human world. Even by human standards, my magic isn’t flashy, which is fine by me. Flashy attracts attention and I can’t afford that.
Rumour has it that I am dead. Not quite. I am Princess Meredith NicEssus. To speak that name after dark is to call down a knock upon your door from a hand that can kill you with a touch. I have been careful, but not careful enough. The shadows have found me, and they are going to take me back home, one way or another.
So the running is over. But the fighting has just begun…
Rich, sensual, brimming with dangerous magic, A Kiss of Shadows is a dazzling tour-de-force where folklore, fantasy and erotically charged adventure collide.

Lethal Lies
Lethal Lies by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99! This is book two in the Blood Brothers romantic suspense series. Some readers wished they felt more of a connection between the hero and heroine, while others loved the sense of action that complemented the romance.
A deadly secret can’t stay buried forever . . .
Revenge. It’s the only thing that will help Anya Best sleep at night. The serial killer who murdered her sister is on the loose, and Anya will stop at nothing to put him behind bars-even use herself as bait to lure him out of hiding. But she can’t do this alone.
Private investigator Heath Jones’s job is to bring bastards to justice. This time it’s personal. He knew the Copper Killer’s latest victim so when her sister asks for his help, he’s all in. But when Anya uses the media to taunt the killer, she exposes Heath’s identity, putting them both in jeopardy. Now, secrets buried long ago are coming to light and the forces determined to destroy him are watching Heath’s every move, waiting to exact their own revenge. And they’ll use anything and anyone to get to Heath.
With twists and turns that will take your breath away, LETHAL LIES is sexy, action-packed suspense at its very best from New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti.

A little sad/annoyed I’ll clearly have to rebuy the entire series to have a matching set of books, if I decide to do that. I understand the rebrand, but it is always annoying when you’ve got nearly the whole series and then the publisher changes things up for the last few. Obvs two covers would probably too much effort, but it would be nice for those who’ve been with MG for a long time.
Funny You Should Ask is wonderful and a great romance with angst–if that’s your jam.
Opposing viewpoint on FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK—the heroine, Chani, is even more annoying at the end of her character arc than she is at the beginning and they’re still doing the “will they or won’t they??” right up until the very very end (less than 10 minutes left in the book.) It was a 2 star read for me/would not recommend.
FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK…all the right ingredients, but it doesn’t make a meal.
FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK: I liked the MCs and found the story hard to put down. I’m not sure I necessarily totally believed the male lead, perhaps because it was all from the female lead’s POV, but I found it was a fun read.
A KISS OF SHADOWS: Wow, I haven’t thought about this book and the Merry Gentry series in a very long time. I remember discovering and devouring the beginning of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series back in the day. A KISS OF SHADOWS came out before the Anita Blake novels had transitioned from paranormal mysteries into erotica, so I picked up the new series. I honestly can’t remember if I even bothered to read book two because erotica is not my jam. All I really remember was some dude with tentacles growing out of his stomach or something. A KISS OF SHADOWS came out in 2000 (!) so I guess it’s not terribly surprising that I don’t remember much.

I loved Funny You Should Ask. I’m usually irritated by stories that flip back and forth between “then” and “now” because I find it distracting, but I thought the use of past and present was so well done and added to the story unfolding and the reader learning bit by bit what happened in the past. I even liked the celebrity magazine articles between chapters, which is another thing that often throws me out of a story.
