Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Tomatoes Caused the Apocalypse

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO is from Amanda, who wants to track down this romance:

Okay, so I read this maybe 15 or 20 years ago. Lately it’s been in my head, but strangely enough a google search has not yielded results!

It’s a supernatural romance series. The main character is maybe a witch of some kind. And she solves problems; maybe like an investigator? I think it must be semi-post apocalyptic because tomatoes are bad and they somehow caused the apocalypse.

There’s a recurring pixie character who is really happy the heroine lets him have her backyard because most people don’t like pixies. The heroine is maybe a demon? But doesn’t find out until the end. The main male character is fae and he’s an ass for most of the series. I think his name starts with T? There’s some big secret about…fertility?

Oh, man this is so terrible. I will be legit impressed if anyone can figure it out. Hopefully I’m not merging more than one story together.

Sound familiar to anyone?

I think it’s Kim Harrison series about Rachel Morgan. The tomatoes check out.

  2. Kim says:

It is the Kim Harrison Hollows Series. The first book is “Dead Witch Walking”. There are now 18 books in the series.

  3. ReadKnitSnark says:

Tomatoes? Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series, beginning with DEAD WITCH WALKING.

  4. @SB Sarah says:

Three in a row all saying the same thing? Could this be solved? We’ll have to ask the querent.

But, since it’s likely: WOO HOO! Y’all are quick, too!

  5. Kareni says:

Add my vote to the three above.

  6. Lori says:

Yep. Hollows series by Kim Harrison. Dead Witch Walking is #1, and most titles are variants on old Western movies, e.g.: The Good, the Bad, and the Undead; Every Which Way But Dead; A Fistfull of Charms…

  7. PamG says:

Definitely The Hollows. . . and now I’m contemplating a reread.

  8. Lynn Stone says:

I LOVE this series. Rachel and Kisten are a hot couple!

  9. PamG says:

    @Lynn Stone
Rachel and Kisten made me cry so hard.

  10. Dawn Roberto says:

It’s Kim Harrison’s Hollows series and Rachel is a witch

Yesssssss! Thank you so much. That’s exactly it. Seriously impressed. You’re all the best. —Amanda

Am I so impressed with all of you who popped right up with that. The Bitchery’s knowledge reserves are second to none.

  13. Kathryn says:

I was so excited to know this one! Add another vote for the The Hollows series

  14. kkw says:

I am of course thrilled that the book is found, but am I the only one slightly disappointed that there is only one contender for Tomatoes Caused the Apocalypse? I love it when no matter how bizarre the scenario there are a multiplicity of books that fit…

  15. Mar says:

To everyone who is a Hollows fan in these comments: Kim Harrison started publishing Hollows books again a few years ago and they’ve so far been excellent. I’ve loved some of them as much as the favorites in the original series. HIGHLY recommend.

  16. Avis says:

@kkw it’s not a romance but the audio drama series Temporal does, with some squinting, feature tomatoes causing the apocalypse.

  17. Sandra says:

I’ve not read this series, and didn’t recognize the title. But I remember the cover, back when PNR/UF heroines were all leather or vinyl pants and bare skin with metal accessories. Glad to see it hasn’t been cartoonized.
