Hide Your Wallet

March 2023 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

Realizing he is in grave danger but not knowing why, he plans a reunion party for the remaining Sinners at his family estate to lure the killer out while Veronica and Stoker investigate.

As the guests arrive and settle in, the evening’s events turn deadly. More clues come to light, leading Veronica, Stoker, and Tiberius to uncover a shared past among the Sinners that has led to the fatal present. But the truth might be far more sinister than what they were prepared for.

  • The Foxglove King

The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten

    Author: Hannah Whitten
Released: March 7, 2023 by Orbit
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Nightshade Kingdom #1

When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she’s lived by one rule: don’t let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city.

Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore’s job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore’s power is revealed, she’s taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what’s happening and who in the King’s court is responsible, or die.

Lore is thrust into the Sainted King’s glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August’s ne’er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society.

But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

Amanda: I enjoyed Whitten’s Wilderwood series and am excited for more fantasy romances.

Sarah: A fantasy with death magic? Interesting!

Elyse: I’m jumping on the Foxglove train!

  • The Quarantine Princess Diaries

The Quarantine Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

    Author: Meg Cabot
Released: March 7, 2023 by Avon
    Genre: , ,
    Series: The Princess Diaries #12

Mia Thermopolis knows just what to do in a crisis: Rule.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, a section of the diary of Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia fell into the hands of Meg Cabot, the Princess’s royal biographer.

As reported in media outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, The Mary Sue, Refinery 29, Bustle, and more, from March until June of 2020, sixteen entries of the princess’s diary were leaked onto Ms. Cabot’s blog, to the delight of over a million fans.

In these entries, titled The Coronavirus Princess Diaries, the princess recorded her most heartfelt emotions while dealing with her husband’s quarantine after exposure to the virus; her personal (and political) battles while imposing health restrictions on her small European nation; life during lockdown (even in as idyllic a location as a palace on the Riviera); and of course, dealing with her demanding royal family, especially her grandmother.

Since then, readers have been clamoring for more chapters of Mia’s coronavirus diary . . . and here they are at last: The Quarantine Princess Diaries include not only the previously released entries (now edited and updated with new content), but two hundred more pages of entirely original, never-before-seen entries, including the princess’s worries over a possible royal affair; a showdown between Mia and Grandmère over the latter’s intended nuptials; the eventual development and distribution of a groundbreaking intranasal vaccine for every citizen in Genovia; and, as always, a royally happy ending.

After all we’ve been through, what could be more comforting for any lover of royal romance than snuggling up with a brand new installment of the diary of Mia Thermopolis, the princess who started it all?

Aarya: One of my most anticipated books of the year!
Not sure I want to read about early quarantine times, but I do miss Mia Thermopolis.

  • Something Wild and Wonderful

Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly

    Author: Anita Kelly
Released: March 7, 2023 by Forever
    Genre: , ,

From the author of Love & Other Disasters comes a sparkling grumpy-meets-sunshine rom-com featuring two men’s sweeping journey across the Northwestern wilderness.

When Alexei Lebedev finally comes out to his conservative community, it does not go well. That’s how he ended up on the rugged Pacific Crest Trail, hoping he can figure out a new life plan in the thousands of miles it’ll take to walk the famed hike. He’s prepared for rattlesnakes, blisters, and months of solitude. What he’s not prepared for is the ray of sunshine named Ben Caravalho.

Charismatic and outgoing, Ben’s personality and infectious laughter is a stark opposite to Alexei’s quiet, reserved demeanor. But no matter how determined Alexei is to hike the trail alone, it seems he and Ben can’t avoid being drawn to each other. Through snow crossings and close calls with coyotes, Alexei inches closer to letting Ben in. As Alexei learns of Ben’s loving family and supportive friends, he begins to get a taste of what found family and belonging could truly feel like. But just as Alexei starts to let down his defenses, a sudden change in plans reawakens his fears—and he must discover if he has the courage to face something even scarier than the trail less traveled: letting himself fall.

Aarya: My idea of hiking is a three-hour exercise with frequent breaks, but I’m willing to put aside my prejudices in fiction.

  • Weyward

    Weyward by Emilia Hart

    Author: Emilia Hart
Released: March 7, 2023 by St. Martin's Press
    Genre: , ,

Three women. Five centuries. One secret.

‘I had nature in my heart, she said. Like she did, and her mother before her. There was something about us – the Weyward women – that bonded us more tightly with the natural world.
We can feel it, she said, the same way we feel rage, sorrow or joy.’

In 2019, Kate flees an abusive relationship in London for Crows Beck, a remote Cumbrian village. Her destination is Weyward Cottage, inherited from her great Aunt Violet, an eccentric entomologist.

As Kate struggles with the trauma of her past, she uncovers a secret about the women in her family. A secret dating back to 1619, when her ancestor Altha Weyward was put on trial for witchcraft…

Weyward is a stunning debut novel about gender and control – about the long echoes of male violence through the centuries. But more than that, it is a celebration of nature, female power and breaking free.

Amanda: Always on board for witchy historical fiction and I love the cover.

Elyse: This historical story of witchcraft sounds like it has a mystery element to it.

    Series: Off the Ice #1

NHL veteran player Kieran Marsh has had more relationships than trips to the sin bin, making him a player on and off the ice. And two years ago, I had a one night stand with him when I thought I would forever stay the anonymous girl in the hockey jersey.

But now my city has an expansion team, and guess who’s one of their star players?

Of course I accept an offer to go see the opening night game. I can’t stay away, even though hockey destroyed my family, and so much about Kieran reminds me of the worst things my father ever did to my mother.

And when Kieran sees me in the stands? I know nothing is going to be the same again. This is his game, and he knows how to win.

Aarya: Can’t wait for a new series from Ainsley (erotic romance pen name for Zoe York).

    Genre: ,
    Series: Lady Sherlock #7

Charlotte Holmes’s brilliant mind and deductive skills are pulled into a dangerous investigation at sea in the new mystery in the bestselling Lady Sherlock series.

After feigning her own death in Cornwall to escape from Moriarty’s perilous attention, Charlotte Holmes goes into hiding. But then she receives a tempting offer: Find a dossier the crown is desperately seeking to recover, and she might be able to go back to a normal life.

Her search leads her aboard the RMS Provence, sailing from Southampton for the eastern hemisphere. But on the night Charlotte makes her move to retrieve the dossier, in the midst of a terrifying storm in the Bay of Biscay, a brutal murder also takes place on the ship.

Instead of solving the crime, as she is accustomed to doing, Charlotte must take care not to be embroiled in this investigation, lest it become known to those who harbor ill intentions that Sherlock Holmes is abroad and still very much alive.

Aarya: Excited for the next installment in my favorite historical mystery series.

Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady–ah, lady of a certain age–who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to.

Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing–a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer.

What Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?

Another book for the senior sleuth trend!

One Extra Corpse by Barbara Hambly: Second in her Silver Screen historical mystery series.

A Most Intriguing Lady by Sarah Ferguson (THAT Sarah Ferguson!): “… a sweeping, romantic compulsively readable historical saga about a Duke’s daughter—the perfect Victorian lady—who secretly moonlights as an amateur sleuth for high society’s inner circle.”

Crochet Collage Garden: 100 patterns for crochet flowers by Chris Norrington: For you crocheters out there. It’s all patterns for little crocheted flowers, leaves, vines, etc. I have her on Instagram, and her stuff iS GORGEOUS.

I only have a few books on my March TBR, but that’s just as well, seeing as I still have a several February releases to get around to reading.

OFF THE MAP (March 7) by Trish Doller is a road-trip romance between a woman who has been traveling on the open road for the past decade and a man who makes maps. Have we had a cartographer hero before? I loved Doller’s FLOAT PLAN and enjoyed THE SUITE SPOT, but her books do tend to be pricy. The Kindle edition of OFF THE MAP is $11.99—a little too rich for my blood. I’ll be waiting for the library copy or a price drop.

THE PLAYING GAME (March 9, postponed from February) is a welcome return for Ainsley Booth (who has recently been publishing more frequently under her alternate pen name of Zoe York). Booth’s books are generally sexier, leaning more toward erotic romance, than the ones she publishes as Zoe York, so I’m expecting this m/f hockey romance to be smoking hot!

TROPICAL STORM (March 9) is the third book in Skye Warren & Amelia Wilde’s Deserted Island trilogy, an MMF romance about a couple stranded on an island after a plane crash and the man who lives a solitary life there. The previous book (NATURAL DISASTER) ended on a cliff-hanger, and I’m expecting TROPICAL STORM to pick up right where it left off.

POSSESSION (March 10) is the next book in A. (Adriana) Anders’s Kink Camp series set at, well, a kink camp. In this book, an actor’s kinky side is exposed in the media. As the scandal explodes, the actor’s “wife” (they’re married, but it’s a fake relationship) follows him to the kink camp—only to discover her own tastes aren’t quite as vanilla as she had always thought.

A SECRET HEIR TO SECURE HIS THRONE (March 28) is Caitlin Crews’s latest offering for Harlequin Presents. The title gives you the basic plot outline: a king who has spent years plotting revenge against the murderers of his parents discovers he has a child from a long-ago liaison. He wants to marry the heroine and legitimize their child, but will the heroine agree to be a pawn in a political game?

ECHO (March 28) is the next in Sybil Bartel’s long-running Alpha Elite romantic-suspense series. The books hew very closely to a template that includes a woman in trouble through no fault of her own, good guys using technology and massive amounts of fire power to their advantage, and plenty of D/s sex.

LOVE THY BROTHER (March 29) is the fourth in Garrett Leigh’s Rebel Kings series of motorcycle club romances. This book features the “brother’s best friend” trope with one MC being the brother of the Rebel Kings club president and the other MC being the president’s best friend. I’ve liked the previous books in the series, but they’re all extremely angsty with quite a bit of violence.

The degree to which I am looking forward to a new KJ Charles book might not be healthy. Or perhaps it is keeping me clinging to some semblance of sanity? And the sequel comes out in September which is almost just too much good fortune for my brain to manage.

I have the Anita Kelly book on hold at the library, but much like that Ruthie Knox book about biking across the US, having done these stupid and exhausting things myself in my misspent youth, it’s intriguing to me because it’s the least sexy premise I can think of. You know what’s sexy? Hygiene. Plumbing. Not being starving all the time. Just sayin

  5. LisaM says:

@kkw hard cosign! I didn’t know there is a sequel already scheduled though. That went straight on my pre-order list.

  6. FashionablyEvil says:

@kkw and LisaM—just wanted to make sure you knew about KJ Charles’s Christmas novella, MASTERS IN THIS HALL? Was self-pubbed and came out in December. Part of the Lilywhite Boys series.

  7. kkw says:

@FashionablyEvil Yes! Thanks to you, I believe, definitely someone here, kindly alerting me to the surprise drop. I am now on her mailing list, and I actually spent a fraction of a second contemplating social media, so that I could follow her on twitter. There’s literally no power on earth that can make me, since I won’t even for her. Still, somehow I actually enjoyed not only a novella but an Xmas themed one at that, so there’s definitely some kind of magic going on.

  8. footiepjs says:

Possession comes out on the tenth?! I didn’t think we were going to get it so soon.

I didn’t loooooove The Rakess, but I’m going to give the new Peckham a chance on release day based on past performance.

  9. The Mimicking of Known Successes is SO GOOD! I read an ARC and loved it.

And I’m really looking forward to Sarah Hawley’s A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon!

  10. DonnaMarie says:

    Goodwood?

    Bwahahahahaaaa!
    Can’t breathe…

  11. Darlynne says:

    Yikes, my wallet.

  12. Kareni says:

    @DonnaMarie:

Someone doubtless thought long and hard about that name!

  13. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@footiepjs: yes! POSSESSION popped up on my kindle’s “Continue series you’ve started” recommendations a couple of days ago. When I checked, it was showing a publication date of March 10. I know Anders had said the publication date might be moved up, so I’m hoping it does indeed drop on March 10. Fingers crossed!

  14. LisaM says:

@FashionablyEvil I joined KJC’s mailing list as well and stalk her on GoodReads, so I did see Masters, thank you. I wasn’t in the mood for Christmas books at the time but I enjoyed it in January.

She also has a collection of stories coming out, including the one that was only on Audible. I was hoping it would include A Song For a Viking, because I love Daniel and Archie so very much, but no luck.

  15. Midge says:

Another one here who can’t wait for the new KJ Charles!

  16. HeatherS says:

    New Melissa Brayden? I’m there.

  17. Annie says:

I really enjoyed the new KJ Charles, and I’m super excited for the next couple in the series after reading the sneak preview. Apparently it’s coming out in September of this year, which feels so soon!

  18. Lisa F says:

New Charles and Peckham are both fantastic. Most of the rest are on my TBR!
