  • Fated Blades

    Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews

Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews is $2.49! Lots of Andrews fans here! This is book three in the Kinsmen series, which I’m not familiar with. Do these have to be read in order? Would love to know!

An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power―and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology. Expecting to suffer through their uneasy alliance, Ramona and Matias instead discover that they understand each other as no one in their families can―and that their combined skills may eclipse the risks of their forbidden alliance.

As the two warriors risk their lives to save their families, they must decide whether to resist or embrace the passion simmering between them. For now, the dance between their families continues―but just one misstep could spell the end of them both.

  • A Duke to Remember

A Duke to Remember by Kelly Bowen

A Duke to Remember by Kelly Bowen is $1.99! This is the second book in A Season for Scandal. During our RITA reader challenge, it received B+ and B- grades. I read this one for a publication and while it was sweet, there was a lot going on that left me confused at times.

    Love takes the stage…

Elise deVries is not what she seems. By night, the actress captivates London theatergoers with her chameleon-like ability to slip inside her characters. By day, she uses her mastery of disguise to work undercover for Chegarre & Associates, an elite agency known for its discreet handling of indelicate scandals. But when Elise is tasked with locating the missing Duke of Ashland, she finds herself center stage in a real-life drama.

Noah Ellery left the glamour of the London aristocracy to pursue a simpler life in the country. He’s managed to avoid any complications or entanglements—that is, until he lays eyes on Elise and realizes there’s more to this beautiful woman than meets the eye. But when Elise reveals her real identity—and her true feelings for him—the runaway duke must confront the past he left behind . . . to keep the woman he loves forever.

  • The Beautiful Ones

The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

RECOMMENDED: The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno Garcia is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

The Beautiful Ones is a book that includes many genres, including fantasy, romance, manners, and just a little bit of Gothic. I enjoyed it more as a soap opera than a romance, but your mileage will vary depending on your interpretation of the characters.

In a world of etiquette and polite masks, no one is who they seem to be.

Antonina Beaulieu is in the glittering city of Loisail for her first Grand Season, where she will attend balls and mingle among high society. Under the tutelage of the beautiful but cold Valérie Beaulieu, she hopes to find a suitable husband. However, the haphazard manifestations of Nina’s telekinetic powers make her the subject of malicious gossip.

Yet dazzling telekinetic performer and outsider Hector Auvray sees Nina’s powers as a gift, and he teaches her how to hone and control them. As they spend more and more time together, Nina falls in love and believes she’s found the great romance that she’s always dreamed of, but Hector’s courtship of Nina is deceptive.

The Beautiful Ones is a sweeping fantasy of manners set in a world inspired by the Belle Époque.

  • The Trouble with Hating You

The Trouble with Hating You by Sajni Patel

The Trouble with Hating You by Sajni Patel is $2.99! Sajni Patel gets some really great covers. Her other one First Love, Take Twowas featured on Cover Awe. Have any of you read this one? What’d you think?

A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy debut about first impressions, second chances, and finding the love of your life in the most unexpected way.

Liya Thakkar is a successful biochemical engineer, takeout enthusiast, and happily single woman. The moment she realizes her parents’ latest dinner party is a setup with the man they want her to marry, she’s out the back door in a flash. Imagine her surprise when the same guy shows up at her office a week later — the new lawyer hired to save her struggling company. What’s not surprising: he’s not too thrilled to see her either after that humiliating fiasco.

Jay Shah looks good on paper…and off. Especially if you like that whole gorgeous, charming lawyer-in-a-good-suit thing. He’s also arrogant and infuriating. As their witty office banter turns into late night chats, Liya starts to think he might be the one man who truly accepts her. But falling for each other means exposing their painful pasts. Will Liya keep running, or will she finally give love a real chance?

  1. CC says:

Fated Blades is what for me into IA (I’m a newbie and I’m now hooked). I’ve read the other Kinsmen Universe book (which is an anthology of short stories) and they don’t need to be read in order. The Kinsmen Universe book does give a good introduction into the world and Fates Blades is a deeper dive. Fated Blades is also available on KU.

  2. Katy L says:

Ilona Andrews’ Kinsman series doesn’t need to be read in order. They are set in the same world, and characters from one story may make brief appearances or be mentioned in another, but they are all readable as stand-alones. The writing style has improved over the years (the first two are about 10 years old) but they are all good.

  3. Sandra says:

Just an FYI on the Andrews (which is great, btw). It’s published under an Amazon imprint, so the ebook is only available for Kindle. The BN link is a POD paperback. Which may be worth it, because that’s a fabulous cover.

  4. flchen1 says:

A Curse in Darkness by Sherilee Gray is 99 cents. It’s the first in a fantasy series, The Thornheart Trials.

  5. BGinBmore says:

No matter how many times I seE that and refs cover Andrews like he like like he’s going to punch her.

  6. Heather M says:

I read The Trouble With Hating You…it had its good points (especially in the female friendships) but overall I’d say for me its about a C. I could kind of see the main characters breaking up like 15 pages after the end, the HEA just didn’t click for me. I also had real trouble with the office romance element of it all. Admittedly not a fan of that trope to begin with, but even at their first work interaction there was a ton of inappropriate conversation that just made me cringe and want to call the HR department. YMMV.

  7. Kareni says:

@BGinBmore: I agree about the cover of Fated Blades; it looks like violence is about to happen.

  8. Darlynne says:

@BGinBmore and @Kareni: If I look closer, because my reaction is always the same as yours, I see how they hold each other and maintain eye contact. Then I finally notice she also has a weapon/magical something, and the initial violence is around them rather than at her/them. If that makes any sense. But first glance says not going to end well.
