The Kingmaker

The Kingmaker by Kennedy Ryan is $2.49! If you’ve been looking to try out Ryan’s steamy, angsty contemporaries, this isn’t a bad deal This is the first book in the series and I believe the first book has a bit of a cliffhanger. The second book is also available at this price.
From beloved, RITA-award-winning author Kennedy Ryan comes the first in her gripping All the King’s Men duology.
In a world of haves and have-nots, Maxim Cade’s family and their oil empire have it all…and he wants nothing to do with it. At odds with his mogul father, he’s determined to build his own empire, even if it means traveling far from home, painted as the black sheep.
Lennix Hunter is the exception to every one of Maxim’s rules. At a protest for the oil pipeline that threatens to mar her ancestral land forever, they meet in a flurry of stars and sparks, and that one moment changes everything. But Maxim’s family is the one stealing from hers, and his father is the man she hates most. He has to lie in order to have her once, and despite the truth, he’ll do anything to keep her.
Even though Lennix tries to hate Maxim, too, their hearts are pointed in the same direction. The inexorable pull between them, across miles and years, will not be denied.
And neither will Maxim.

Dating Mr. Darcy by Kate O’Keeffe is $1.99! This was my selection in a previous Hide Your Wallet. It’s an enemies to lovers, opposites attract romance set on a reality show. Did you pick this one up?
Is it a truth universally known that a girl must compete on reality TV to win a modern-day Mr. Darcy’s heart?
Clothing designer Emma Brady is having serious doubts about how far she’ll go to promote her new activewear line. Sure, being on a reality show would be great for business, but is putting up with Mr. Darcy-wannabe Sebastian Huntington-Ross really worth it?
Sebastian is straight out of an Austen novel. But it’s hard to focus on his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and wickedly sexy accent when all Emma can see is his pride, arrogance, and smug demeanor.
But Sebastian has a secret reason for being on the show, and when Emma figures out what it is, her heart warms to him–without her permission.
Will Emma hold fast and keep the aristocratic Sebastian at arm’s length? Or will she put her reservations aside when the lines between reality and “reality show” start to blur?
Dating Mr. Darcy is a laugh-out-loud feel-good rom com for fans of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Sophie Ranald, and Sophie Kinsella.

None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney is $2.99! I mentioned this one on a previous Get Rec’d. It’s a YA horror retelling of Silence of the Lambs. I really enjoy it and it doesn’t skimp on the violence and overall bad stuff, so definitely check content warnings.
The Silence of the Lambs meets Sadie in this riveting psychological thriller about two teenagers teaming up with the FBI to track down juvenile serial killers.
In 1982, two teenagers—serial killer survivor Emma Lewis and US Marshal candidate Travis Bell—are recruited by the FBI to interview convicted juvenile killers and provide insight and advice on cold cases. From the start, Emma and Travis develop a quick friendship, gaining information from juvenile murderers that even the FBI can’t crack. But when the team is called in to give advice on an active case—a serial killer who exclusively hunts teenagers—things begin to unravel. Working against the clock, they must turn to one of the country’s most notorious incarcerated murderers for help: teenage sociopath Simon Gutmunsson.
Despite Travis’s objections, Emma becomes the conduit between Simon and the FBI team. But while Simon seems to be giving them the information they need to save lives, he’s an expert manipulator playing a very long game…and he has his sights set on Emma.
Captivating, harrowing, and chilling, None Shall Sleep is an all-too-timely exploration of not only the monsters that live among us, but also the monsters that live inside us.

Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison is $1.99! This is book one in The Hollows series, which is urban fantasy with a fierce heroine and a lot of opportunities for asskicking. It has a 4+-star average on GoodReads, and is frequently mentioned when readers talk about which urban fantasy series to try next. However, if memory serves me right, I couldn’t get into it myself.
All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party . . . and to feed.
Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining—and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.
A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead . . . or undead.

None Shall Sleep was very good. I liked both leads.
I HATED the lead in Dead Witch Walking. The ‘leather pants wearing sassy heroine’ trope turned me off urban fantasy for years.
@MirandaB 100% agreed! Also the homophobia against the roommate. The author just shifted the anxiety around sex in general of the vampire myth to anxiety about non-heterosexual sex… at least that was my reading of it.
Strongly recommend the Kennedy Ryan duo. Yes, angst but also great character development, political savviness, and an intriguing storyline. I’ll be re-reading these and Ryan is an autobuy author for me. Really looking forward to her upcoming one, which is getting great press and reviews.
Has anyone know read and can comment on DATING MR. DARCY? I often adore Austen-related works, but just as often find them bland or silly.
Regarding the None Shall Sleep cover, I am mixed on the illustrated covers trend for romance novels, but the in-vogue cartoony style sure doesn’t work for horror/suspense!
Another hard no on Dead Witch Walking, it’s a while now but in addition to the homophobia, and “I’m so hot” leather pants I thin i thought she was TSTL. I seem to remember thinking the pixe – Jenks? – was far more interesting than the witch main character. oh and the whole thing about tomatoes was really poor world building.
@Neile – my Kindle tells me I read Dating Mr Darcy, but I remember nothing about it, and I didn’t bother with the sequels, so I’m guessing I found it bland.
I remember liking Dead Witch Walking when I read it, but I bought the next several books in the series when Borders was closing, and still haven’t read them.
Some of the comments here lowered the likelihood of me getting around to them anytime soon.

Susannah Nix’s charming MY CONE AND ONLY is free on amazon US today, too. I’d liked her previous work fine, but this series has really hooked me. I’d read this out of the library but I one-clicked so fast…
@Jazzlet oh the tomato thing! I totally forgot about that!
If you’ve never read it, the basis of the revelation that vampires and where wolves and pixies etc have been living among regular humans is around the death of humans due to the GMO tomato hitting the produce section… oh fear of science, you’ve been around forever…
