  • The Business of Blood

The Business of Blood by Kerrigan Byrne

The Business of Blood by Kerrigan Byrne is $1.99! This is book one in the Fiona Mahoney historical mystery series. It was recommended by Renee Ahdieh on the podcast and she mentions that it takes place during the time when Jake the Ripper was active.

London, 1890. Blood and death are Fiona Mahoney’s trade, and business, as they say, is booming.

Dying is the only thing people do with any regularity, and Fiona makes her indecorous living cleaning up after the corpses are carted away. Her childhood best friend, Mary, was the last known victim of Jack the Ripper. It’s been two years since Fiona scrubbed Mary’s blood from the floorboards, and London is no longer buzzing about the Ripper, but Fiona hasn’t forgotten.

And she hasn’t stopped searching for Jack.

When she’s called to a murder in the middle of the night, Fiona finds a victim mutilated in an eerily similar fashion to those of the Ripper, and only a few doors down from Mary’s old home. The relentless, overbearing, and irritatingly handsome Inspector Grayson Croft warns her away from the case. She might have listened, if she hadn’t found a clue in the blood. A clue that will lead her down a path from which there is no return. As a killer cuts a devastating swath through London, a letter written in blood arrives at her door, and it is only then that Fiona realizes just how perilous her endeavor is. For she has drawn the attention of an obsessive evil, and is no longer the hunter, but the prey. Fiona Mahoney is in the business of blood.

But she’s not the only one.

With intriguing twists, blood-chilling discoveries, and dazzling prose, USAToday Bestselling author Kerrigan Byrne shows that a woman’s work is never done, even when she is sleuthing out a serial killer.

  • When Sparks Fly

When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting

When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting is $1.99! This is a friends to lovers romance with two BFFs who are roommates. I thought this one was just okay, though felt the main characters annoyed me more than usual. Have you read this one?

Charming, hilarious, and emotional…When Sparks Fly is Helena Hunting at her very best!

Avery Spark is living her best life. Between her friends, her sisters, and Spark House, the event hotel her family owns, she doesn’t have much time for anything else, especially relationships. She’d rather hang out with her best friend and roommate, Declan McCormick, than deal with the dating scene. But everything changes when she is in a car accident and needs someone to care for her as she heals.

Declan avoids relationships, giving him a playboy reputation that he lives up to when he puts a one-night stand ahead of a promise he made to Avery. While he may not have been the one driving the car, he feels responsible for Avery’s injuries and is determined to make it up to her by stepping into the role of caretaker.

Little did they know that the more time they spend in compromising positions, the attraction they’ve been refusing to acknowledge becomes impossible to ignore. When they finally give in to the spark between them, neither is prepared for the consequences. Their love is fragile and all it will take is a blow from the past to shatter it all.

  • Duke Gone Rogue

Duke Gone Rogue by Christy Carlyle

Duke Gone Rogue by Christy Carlyle is $1.99! This is book one in the Love on Holiday historical romance series. This one has a stuffy duke hero and a heroine who has a gardening business.

Will Hart, the Duke of Ashmore, is everything his father was not: scrupulously honest, forbidding, and apparently joyless. As a duke, he’s a catch, but as a grumpy stick-in-the mud, no lady knows quite how to catch his eye. When his sisters concoct a plan for him to visit a run-down family property in Cornwall, he reluctantly agrees, hoping it will be a chance for him to rediscover the carefree man he once was.

Madeline Ravenwood believes she can do anything she puts her mind to, including running the gardening business she inherited from her father and being a founding member of the Royal Visit Committee. Hard at work preparing for Princess Beatrice’s visit to judge their annual flower show, the appearance of a stern, handsome duke is a distraction Maddie doesn’t need.

Tasked by the committee to convince the duke to repair his ramshackle manor house in time for the royal visit, he agrees, if she will join him as he explores Cornwall. Spending their days, and nights, together, Will’s love for Maddie becomes too strong to ignore. But Maddie knows how different their worlds are and when the burdens of his title reappear, can Will convince her that she’s the woman he’s been waiting for?

  • Talk Bookish to Me

Talk Bookish to Me by Kate Bromley

Talk Bookish to Me by Kate Bromley is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with the heroine who is an author and also runs a popular bookstagram account. Where does she find the time?! The hero is her old first love and they reunite at a friend’s wedding.

Inspiration can come from the most unlikely – and inconvenient – sources.

Kara Sullivan’s life is full of love – albeit fictional. As a best-selling romance novelist and influential Bookstagrammer, she’s fine with getting her happily-ever-after fix between the covers of a book.

But right now? Not only is Kara’s best friend getting married next week – which means big wedding stress – but the deadline for her next novel is looming, and she hasn’t written a single word. The last thing she needs is for her infuriating first love, Ryan Thompson, to suddenly appear in the wedding party. But Ryan’s unexpected arrival sparks a creative awakening in Kara that inspires the steamy historical romance she desperately needs to deliver.

With her wedding duties intensifying, her deadline getting closer by the second and her bills not paying themselves, Kara knows there’s only one way for her to finish her book and to give her characters the ever-after they deserve. But can she embrace the unlikely, ruggedly handsome muse—who pushes every one of her buttons—to save the wedding, her career and, just maybe, write her own happy ending?

  1. Lena Brassard/Ren Benton says:

I ordinarily let other people’s typos slide on by when I’m not being paid to correct them, but I had a vision of Jake from Statefarm the Ripper that I feel is necessary to inflict on everyone else.

  2. spinsterrevival says:

Yes, Jake the Ripper was a fun laugh from me this morning (sorely needed).

FYI Electric Idol by Katee Robert is $1.99 in Kindle; it’s the story of Psyche and Eros in her Dark Olympus series which I’ve really been enjoying.

  3. EJ says:

Jake the Ripper just doesn’t inspire the same level of terror. I’m picturing a little terrier that rips up stuffed toys.

  4. Kareni says:

Fans of Katherine Addison’s The Goblin Emperor might enjoy this story in which Thara Celehar plays a small part ~ Min Zemerin’s Plan

  5. Cristie says:

Jake from state farm the ripper just made me cackle. Thanks for that!

  6. PatriciaM says:

Thank you for the tip on the story by Katherine Addison. I am reading Witness for the Dead now after inhaling The Goblin Emperor.

  7. Neile says:

FYI, the audiobook for Lucy Parker’s ACT LIKE IT is on sale at Chirp (which doesn’t require a membership–you just need to use its app or website to play the files) for $3.99. I can’t remember if links are cool but the website is chirpbooks . com

  8. Neile says:

Oh, and a propos of today’s featured books, TALK BOOKISH TO ME is also $3.99. Has anyone read it and have comments?

There are also a Roxie Noir, a Sarina Bowen, and a Rebekah Weatherspoon currently on sale. I get in a lot of trouble on that site.

  9. Susan says:

FYI Priscilla Oliveras has a new book out “West Side Love Story” and its an Amazon first reads selection, $1.99 all month.

  10. LisaM says:

Adding my thanks forthe link to the Katherine Addison story. Maybe these characters will turn up in the new book coming in June (which I pre-ordered this weekend).

  11. Vicki says:

I enjoyed The Business of Blood, would recommend if you want London by gaslight. Also wanted to mentioned that Prince of Tides is a KDD today. I loved that book when it came out – just after an abortive attempt at moving to South Carolina, what can I say.

  12. Jazzlet says:

EJ my Jake is a ripper of soft toys, but he’s a German Shepherd so a bit bigger than a terrier!

  13. EJ says:

    @Jazzlet

I really want a dog named Jake the Ripper now! I would tell people his name was Jake but he and I would know the truth.
