  • Hench

    Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

RECOMMENDED: Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and gave it an A:

In reading and then re-reading this book, I’ve discovered so many more layers, hidden parallels, and very clever dissections of the fictional world of the characters and of the actual reality that this book resides within. Hench is delicious in its anger and ferocity, chilling in its deadpan snark and arctic clarity of analysis and assessment, and meticulous in its nuance. It’s a villainously wonderful good time.

A smart, imaginative, and evocative novel of love, betrayal, revenge, and redemption, told with razor-sharp wit and affection, in which a young woman discovers the greatest superpower—for good or ill—is a properly executed spreadsheet.

Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy?

As a temp, she’s just a cog in the machine. But when she finally gets a promising assignment, everything goes very wrong, and an encounter with the so-called “hero” leaves her badly injured.  And, to her horror, compared to the other bodies strewn about, she’s the lucky one.

So, of course, then she gets laid off.

With no money and no mobility, with only her anger and internet research acumen, she discovers her suffering at the hands of a hero is far from unique. When people start listening to the story that her data tells, she realizes she might not be as powerless as she thinks.

Because the key to everything is data: knowing how to collate it, how to manipulate it, and how to weaponize it. By tallying up the human cost these caped forces of nature wreak upon the world, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing.  And with social media and viral videos, she can control that appearance.

It’s not too long before she’s employed once more, this time by one of the worst villains on earth. As she becomes an increasingly valuable lieutenant, she might just save the world.

A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of Millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

  • First Love, Take Two

First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel

First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance where two exes become roommates. We featured this one on a previous edition of Cover Awe. Shana gave this a B-:

Readers who like to root for a couple who are up against a closed-minded community, and who sympathize with an anxious, and occasionally strident heroine, would enjoy First Love, Take Two. If you’re looking for a standalone romance, low angst, and a couple with stellar communications skills, this might not be for you. Either way, my fellow foodies will want platters of buttermilk biscuits and tacos at hand while you read.

On the verge of realizing her dream of being a doctor, Preeti Patel should be ecstatic. But between the stress of her residency, trying to find a job, and managing her traditional, no-boundaries family, Preeti’s anxiety is through the roof. Relationships and love aren’t even an option. Fortunately, Preeti’s finally found a new place to stay . . . only to discover that her new roommate is her ex.

Preeti never quite got over Daniel Thompson. Super-hot, plenty of swagger, amazing cook—the guy is practically perfect. And if it weren’t for their families, there might have been a happily ever after. But it’s hard to keep her sanity and libido in check when the man of her dreams is sleeping mere feet away. Can Preeti and Daniel find a way to stand up and fight for each other one last time . . . before they lose their second chance?

  • Radiance

    Radiance by Grace Draven

Radiance by Grace Draven is 99c and a Kindle Daily Deal! This was a previous book club pick on the site and a fantasy romance. I remember really liking this one, especially the beginning dynamics between the hero and heroine. Have you read it?

  • The Secret Bridesmaid

The Secret Bridesmaid by Katy Birchall

The Secret Bridesmaid by Katy Birchall is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance or perhaps more of fiction with strong romantic elements. Anyway, being a professional bridesmaid sounds like my personal hell.

Matrimony meets mayhem in a modern British romcom about a young woman charged with pulling off the biggest aristocratic wedding of the year––and the misadventures that ensue.

Sophie Breeze is a brilliant bridesmaid. So brilliant, in fact, that she’s made it her full-time job.

As a professional bridesmaid, Sophie is hired by London brides to be their right-hand woman, posing as a friend but working behind the scenes to help plan the perfect wedding and ensure their big day goes off without a hitch. When she’s hired by Lady Victoria Swann––a former model and “It Girl” of 1970’s London; now the Marchioness of Meade––for the society wedding of the year, it should be a chance for Sophie to prove just how talented she is.

Of course, it’s not ideal that the bride, Lady Victoria’s daughter, Cordelia, is an absolute diva and determined to make Sophie’s life a nightmare. It’s also a bit inconvenient that Sophie finds herself drawn to Cordelia’s posh older brother, who is absolutely off limits. But when a rival society wedding is announced for the very same day, things start to get…well, complicated.

Can Sophie pull off the biggest challenge of her career––execute a high-profile gala for four hundred and fifty guests in record time, win over a reluctant bride, and catch the eye of handsome Lord Swann––all while keeping her true identity a secret, and her dignity intact?

Heartwarming and hilarious, The Secret Bridesmaid celebrates the joys (and foibles) of weddings, the nuances of female friendship, and the redeeming power of love in its many unexpected forms.

  1. Laurel says:

I highly recommend Radiance by Grace Draven. I have re-read it multiple times, and even got the audiobook because I enjoyed it so much. If you like fantasy romance, you will love it.

  2. Kareni says:

I came to post about Radiance, but I see you have it listed. I recommend it.

  3. EJ says:

Hench just sounds like a good time.

  4. spinsterrevival says:

I loved Hench so much (and I’m pretty sure I read it based off of Sarah’s rec); it’s a perfect mix of rage and spreadsheets. I also discovered what body horror was through this book (so FYI), but I highly recommend (also if there ever is a follow up, I will be all over it).

  5. Qualisign says:

HENCH is a phenomenally trenchant critique of contemporary society that well deserves Sarah’s A grade. However, the satire was too close to the bone for me and it left me deeply saddened, if not downright depressed.

  6. kkw says:

Loved Hench, could not stand Radiance. Hench started a little slow for me but I got totally sucked in. Radiance started off promising and I wound up so bored I couldn’t make myself slog on. Impossible to know which way things are going to go without trying, right?
Just like you can’t judge a book by its cover, and yet I am not going to try either of the cartoony ones. If the blurbs sound incredibly tempting I can make myself get past it, but I am really looking forward to that trend passing.

  7. Gail says:

I bought Hench. I love stories of people who buck the system and use it against the bad guys… especially if they win.

  8. SandyH says:

If you haven’t read Radiance grab it quick. Such a wonderful story.

  9. Darlynne says:

Audible has a sale until 4/29 on many titles, including Daniel O’Malley’s ROOK and STILETTO; Mur Lafferty’s GIDEON and HARROW THE NINTH; Rachel Aaron’s DMZ series; and way more than anyone wants me to list. All sale titles are $4-6.

In the recent discussion about innkeepers, THE WANDERING INN was recommended. These books are also part of the Audible sale.

Libro.FM is having a sale for Independent Bookstore Day. Mur Lafferty’s books are $5 there and members get an additional 30% off.

  10. JenC says:

I enjoyed THE SECRET BRIDESMAID. It was fun and well written.

  11. Pam says:

Just got Hench as it sounds totally unique. I also personally recommend Radiance, one of the best fantasy romances I’ve ever read.

  12. Maria says:

I enjoyed Radiance because the characters and romance are well-developed. But I didn’t find much conflict in either the romance (other than the interspecies thing) or the plot. In fact, there wasn’t a whole lot of plot. The end is not wholly satisfying (as the longer story arc remains open), and the “epilog” is the setup for the next book.

  13. FashionablyEvil says:

HENCH was a DNF for me—way too violent and the main character’s best friend was a POS.

  14. Kareni says:

I, too, did not finish Hench.

  15. Kate Rose says:

Liked The Secret Bridesmaid a lot! It was just very fun and it made me laugh. Interesting relationships were definitely between the women – i couldn’t remember the love interest’s name while i was reading (he probably had one?) Great for an airplane or vacation read.

  16. JudyW says:

I thoroughly enjoyed both Hench and Radiance. Hench was a hoot and I thought a little romance could have easily be inserted. Radiance was wonderful and showed how even though each thought the other ugly by their own standards they looked beyond that and connected. Outside threats brought them closer together.
