  • Clean Sweep

    Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews

Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews is $2.99! I’ve heard good things about this book and it has a mix of scifi and paranormal elements, and I really don’t know why I’m dragging my feet on reading this series. Is there is a romance element to it?

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is…different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, “normal” is a bit of a stretch for Dina.

And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night…Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

  • How Long til Black Future Month?

How Long til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin

RECOMMENDED: How Long ’til Black Future Month by N.K. Jemisin is $3.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Carrie gave this an A grade in a Lightning Review. You really can’t go wrong with Jemisin.

Hugo award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N. K. Jemisin sharply examines modern society in her first short story collection.

    N. K. Jemisin is one of the most powerful and acclaimed speculative fiction authors of our time. In the first collection of her evocative short fiction, Jemisin equally challenges and delights readers with thought-provoking narratives of destruction, rebirth, and redemption.

In these stories, Jemisin sharply examines modern society, infusing magic into the mundane, and drawing deft parallels in the fantasy realms of her imagination. Dragons and hateful spirits haunt the flooded streets of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In a parallel universe, a utopian society watches our world, trying to learn from our mistakes. A black mother in the Jim Crow South must save her daughter from a fey offering impossible promises. And in the Hugo award-nominated short story “The City Born Great,” a young street kid fights to give birth to an old metropolis’s soul.

  • Murder at Mallowan Hall

Murder at Mallowan Hall by Colleen Cambridge

Murder at Mallowan Hall by Colleen Cambridge is $2.99! Sarah mentioned this one in October’s Hide Your Wallet, so it’s a relatively recent release. It’s a historical house party mystery starring Agatha Christie’s housekeeper. Did any of you grab this one?

The first in an exciting new historical mystery series set in the home of Agatha Christie!

Colleen Cambridge’s charming and inventive new historical series introduces an unforgettable heroine in Phyllida Bright, fictional housekeeper for none other than famed mystery novelist Agatha Christie. When a dead body is found during a house party at the home of Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan, it’s up to famous author’s head of household, Phyllida Bright, to investigate…

Tucked away among Devon’s rolling green hills, Mallowan Hall combines the best of English tradition with the modern conveniences of 1930. Housekeeper Phyllida Bright, as efficient as she is personable, manages the large household with an iron fist in her very elegant glove. In one respect, however, Mallowan Hall stands far apart from other picturesque country houses…

The manor is home to archaeologist Max Mallowan and his famous wife, Agatha Christie. Phyllida is both loyal to and protective of the crime writer, who is as much friend as employer. An aficionado of detective fiction, Phyllida has yet to find a gentleman in real life half as fascinating as Mrs. Agatha’s Belgian hero, Hercule Poirot. But though accustomed to murder and its methods as frequent topics of conversation, Phyllida is unprepared for the sight of a very real, very dead body on the library floor…

A former Army nurse, Phyllida reacts with practical common sense–and a great deal of curiosity. It soon becomes clear that the victim arrived at Mallowan Hall under false pretenses during a weekend party. Now, Phyllida not only has a houseful of demanding guests on her hands–along with a distracted, anxious staff–but hordes of reporters camping outside. When another dead body is discovered–this time, one of her housemaids–Phyllida decides to follow in M. Poirot’s footsteps to determine which of the Mallowans’ guests is the killer. With help from the village’s handsome physician, Dr. Bhatt, Mr. Dobble, the butler, along with other household staff, Phyllida assembles the clues. Yet, she is all too aware that the killer must still be close at hand and poised to strike again. And only Phyllida’s wits will prevent her own story from coming to an abrupt end…

  • Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging

Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

RECOMMENDEDAngus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison is $1.99! I LOVED this book and this series growing up. It’s supremely funny and really captures the embarrassment and anxiety of being a teen. Adult readers may find this YA series to be a bit too silly, but for a 14-year old girl, I think it’s perfect. I will also add the caveat that I haven’t read it in over a decade, so it may not have aged well.

Angus: My mixed-breed cat, half domestic tabby, half Scottish wildcat. The size of a small Labrador, only mad. Likes to stalk Mr. and Mrs. Next Door’s poodle. I used to drag him around on a lead, but, as I explained to Mrs. Next Door, he ate it.

Thongs: Stupid underwear worn by old Swotty Knickers, Lindsay. What’s the point of them, anyway? They just go up your bum, as far as I can tell.

Full-Frontal Snogging: Kissing with the trimmings, lip to lip, open mouth, tongues…everything (apart from dribble, which is never acceptable). As taught to me by a professional snogger.

In this wildly funny journal of a year in the life of Georgia Nicolson, British author Louise Rennison has perfectly captured the soaring joys and bottomless angst if being a teenager. In the spirit of “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” this fresh, irreverent, and simply hilarious book will leave you laughing out loud. As Georgia would say, it’s “fabbity fab fab!”

  1. Darlynne says:

I thoroughly enjoyed ANGUS, which I read as an adult. Sure it’s all teenage angst, but Georgia is sharp and funny, a great narrator.

  2. Carrie G says:

There is a romance that runs through the first three books in the series/It’s satisfying, but it’s not the main focus, which is fine. I really love the series. The fourth book is about the sister of the heroine in the first three, and it, too, has a romance. I reread all of these at the beginning of the pandemic. Great comfort reads-well-written, exciting, and humorous at times.

  3. NomadiCat says:

CLEAN SWEEP is a perennial favorite with high re-readability. I just finished the brand new Graphic Audio adaptation of the book and it had me rolling on the floor. It’s excellent in every meduim!

  4. Carrie G says:

The above comment was about the Ilona Andrews book, Clean Sweep. It might help to mention that.

  5. Sandra says:

Just FYI, for anyone who missed it. Ilona Andrews has started a new Innkeeper serial on their blog. Updates every Friday.

  6. Christi says:

I really love the Innkeeper Chronicles, including Clean Sweep. I think that Sweep of the Blade, which is about the main character of the other books’s sister, is much more of a traditional romance. But all of them are well done and a lot of fun.

  8. Alyssa says:

I love the Innkeeper Chronicles! It’s one of my favorite series, to be honest. It has a romance element but it’s not the main focus of the series.

  9. J says:

If you want a taste of innkeeper they are releasing the latest book for free on their website.

  10. Carrie G says:

@kareni, thanks for the link. DiscoDollyDeb’s overview of 2021 covers is so full of insight and humor.

  11. Susan says:

I’m so many years beyond the target audience for Angus that it’s not even funny, but I also enjoyed it.

I also second all the warm fuzzies for the Innkeeper series. The books aren’t terribly long, so they’re perfect when you need a quick pick-me-up.

  12. Susan says:

I should also mention that there’s a bonus crossover element from another Andrews series. It’s not necessary to have read the other series–it’s just a nice treat the fans.

(I’m purposely not spoiling which series.)

  13. Tam says:

I put off reading Innkeeper for a long time because I was extremely over werewolf/vampire love triangles, which was how they marketed the first book. It is not remotely a werewolf/vampire love triangle, and she could have used another word altogether for her space vampire folk and the book would still have worked fine. Loved this series!

  14. Jcp says:

    Free:
Between His Lover and the Deep Blue Sea by Merry Farmer
The Catching Kind by Bria Quintanilla
Soldier by Tarin Lex today only
Rowan by Tarin Lex today only
Dreams in Deadwood by Kari Trumbo
Lucy in Labuan by Rachel Ayala
    Broken by Lisa Lang Blakeney
The Christmas Bargain by Shana Hatfield

  15. Laurel says:

I would read a toilet paper ad if Ilona Andrews wrote it. Everything they write hits the right spot, and all of their series are different. They are one of my (very few) auto buy authors. If you haven’t read the Innkeeper series, give it a shot – it is very good.

  16. Jerrica says:

GraphicAudio just released Clean Sweep as an audiobook with a full cast narration with music and sound effects. It was great diving back into the original with a new feel to the story.

  17. Taylor says:

@sandra, thanks for the heads up!!! Love IA serials!!!

  18. Msb says:

The Jemisin stories are terrific in themselves and a good intro to the rest of her work (if you need one). The first is a fascinating engagement with LeGuin’s classic The Ones Who Walk away from Omelas, and the last is the kernel of her most recent novel.
