Hide Your Wallet

September’s New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • Cemetery Boys

    Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

    Author: Aiden Thomas
Released: September 1, 2020 by Swoon Reads
    Genre: , , ,

A trans boy determined to prove he’s a brujo to his Latinx family summons a ghost who refuses to leave in Aiden Thomas’s paranormal YA debut.

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.

Bestowed by the ancient goddess of death, Yadriel and the gifted members of his Latinx community can see spirits: women have the power to heal bodies and souls, while men can release lost spirits to the afterlife. But Yadriel, a trans boy, has never been able to perform the tasks of the brujas – because he is a brujo.

When his cousin suddenly dies, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

However, the ghost he summons is not his cousin. It’s Julian Diaz, the resident bad boy of his high school, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves.

Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.

Ellen: This is weirdly specific but I love “inconvenient ghost oops now I’m in love with the ghost” stories.

  • The Deadly Hours

The Deadly Hours by Susanna Kearsley

    Author: Susanna Kearsley
Released: September 1, 2020 by Poisoned Pen Press
    Genre: ,

A stellar line-up of historical mystery novelists weaves the tale of a priceless and cursed gold watch as it passes through time wreaking havoc from one owner to another. The characters are irrevocably linked by fate, each playing a key role in breaking the curse and destroying the watch once and for all.

From 1733 Italy to Edinburgh in 1831 to a series of chilling murders in 1870 London, and a lethal game of revenge decades later, the watch touches lives with misfortune, until it comes into the reach of one young woman who might be able to stop it for good.

Aarya: I’ve only read the Susanna Kearsley novella and I LOVED it. Perfect fan service for SK fans (we see Anna/Edmund, Mary/Hugh, and Daniel/Eva). It works as standalone though you might miss some nuance. I really need to read the rest of the antho.

As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.

  • See What You Made Me Do

See What You Made Me Do by Jess Hill

    Author: Jess Hill
Released: September 1, 2020 by Sourcebooks
    Genre:

At the office of Safe Steps, Victoria’s dedicated 24/7 family violence response call centre, phone counsellors receive a call every three minutes. Many women are repeat callers: on average, they will go back to an abusive partner eight times before leaving for good.

‘You must get so frustrated when you think a woman’s ready to leave and then she decides to go back,’ I say.

‘No,’ replies one phone counsellor, pointedly. ‘I’m frustrated that even though he promised to stop, he chose to abuse her again.’

Women are abused or killed by their partners at astonishing rates: in Australia, almost 17 per cent of women over the age of fifteen – one in six – have been abused by an intimate partner.

In this confronting and deeply researched account, journalist Jess Hill uncovers the ways in which abusers exert control in the darkest – and most intimate – ways imaginable. She asks: What do we know about perpetrators? Why is it so hard to leave? What does successful intervention look like?

What emerges is not only a searing investigation of the violence so many women experience, but a dissection of how that violence can be enabled and reinforced by the judicial system we trust to protect us.

Combining exhaustive research with riveting storytelling, See What You Made Me Do dismantles the flawed logic of victim-blaming and challenges everything you thought you knew about domestic and family violence.

Sneezy: While women are more likely to be victims of domestic violence, we’re also fed bullshit about how we could have been safe if only we were smarter, better, stronger. Knowing what red flags to look for is important, but so is understanding intellectually and emotionally that the blame lies solely with the abuser, not the abused. Hoping this book is a robust read and challenges my thinking as it promises to do!

  • The Smart Wife

The Smart Wife by Yolande Strengers

    Author: Yolande Strengers
Released: September 1, 2020 by The MIT Press
    Genre:

A bold dive into the problematic development (and developers) of “smart wives”–feminized digital assistants who are friendly, sometimes flirty, docile, efficient, occasionally glitchy, and perpetually available.

Meet the Smart Wife–at your service, an eclectic collection of feminized AI, robotic, and smart devices. This digital assistant is friendly and sometimes flirty, docile and efficient, occasionally glitchy but perpetually available. She might go by Siri, or Alexa, or inhabit Google Home. She can keep us company, order groceries, vacuum the floor, turn out the lights. A Japanese digital voice assistant–a virtual anime hologram named Hikari Azuma–sends her “master” helpful messages during the day; an American sexbot named Roxxxy takes on other kinds of household chores. In The Smart Wife, Yolande Strengers and Jenny Kennedy examine the emergence of digital devices that carry out “wifework”–domestic responsibilities that have traditionally fallen to (human) wives. They show that the principal prototype for these virtual helpers–designed in male-dominated industries–is the 1950s housewife: white, middle class, heteronormative, and nurturing, with a spick-and-span home. It’s time, they say, to give the Smart Wife a reboot.

Sneezy: Going by the summary, this book will break down the ways technology is reproducing sexism, classism, and cis het structures. Very much here for and curious about how this book examines this issue and what solutions they suggest.

  • The Tragedy of Heterosexuality

The Tragedy of Heterosexuality by Jane Ward

    Author: Jane Ward
Released: September 1, 2020 by NYU Press
    Genre:

A troubling account of heterosexual desire in the era of #MeToo

Heterosexuality is in crisis. Reports of sexual harassment, misconduct, and rape saturate the news in the era of #MeToo. Straight men and women spend thousands of dollars every day on relationship coaches, seduction boot camps, and couple’s therapy in a search for happiness.

In The Tragedy of Heterosexuality, Jane Ward smartly explores what, exactly, is wrong with heterosexuality in the twenty-first century, and what straight people can do to fix it for good. She shows how straight women, and to a lesser extent straight men, have tried to mend a fraught patriarchal system in which intimacy, sexual fulfillment, and mutual respect are expected to coexist alongside enduring forms of inequality, alienation, and violence in straight relationships.

Ward also takes an intriguing look at the multi-billion-dollar self-help industry, which markets goods and services to help heterosexual couples without addressing the root of their problems. Ultimately, she encourages straight men and women to take a page out of queer culture, reminding them “about the human capacity to desire, fuck, and show respect at the same time.”

Sneezy: Often it is asked, “Are the cis hets okay?” And 99.999% of the time, the answer…is no. But that’s hardly a surprise, is it? Fellow cis hets, let’s dig in and learn!

  • Transcendent Kingdom

    Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

    Author: Yaa Gyasi
Released: September 1, 2020 by Knopf
    Genre:

Yaa Gyasi’s stunning follow-up to her acclaimed national best seller Homegoing is a powerful, raw, intimate, deeply layered novel about a Ghanaian family in Alabama

Gifty is a fifth year candidate in neuroscience at Stanford School of Medicine studying reward seeking behavior in mice and the neural circuits of depression and addiction. Her brother, Nana, was a gifted high school athlete who died of a heroin overdose after a knee injury left him hooked on OxyContin. Her suicidal mother is living in her bed. Gifty is determined to discover the scientific basis for the suffering she sees all around her. But even as she turns to the hard sciences to unlock the mystery of her family’s loss, she finds herself hungering for her childhood faith, and grappling with the evangelical church in which she was raised, whose promise of salvation remains as tantalizing as it is elusive. Transcendent Kingdom is a deeply moving portrait of a family of Ghanain immigrants ravaged by depression and addiction and grief–a novel about faith, science, religion, love. Exquisitely written, emotionally searing, this is an exceptionally powerful follow-up to Gyasi’s phenomenal debut.

Shana: Gyasi’s book Homegoing is one of my faves, so I’m looking forward to new and equally bittersweet sounding book.

Patriot will do anything to protect its secret. On the run and with nowhere else to turn, Willa seeks an alliance with Lock, a notorious blood-hacker who cheats the Harvest to support the children orphaned by it. But they soon find themselves in the grasp of a new type of evil.

Amanda: This sounds absolutely bonkers and I need it.

It Will Just Be Us by Jo Kaplan: “A terrifying new gothic horror novel about two sisters and a haunted house that never sleeps, perfect for fans of Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle.” I at least want to pull the sample for that one.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Why is THE SMART WIFE (which looks interesting, btw) listed as “Not a Book”? It clearly seems to be a book and Sneezy’s blurb even includes the words “this book…”

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I have quite a few books on my September list, but because several of them have been postponed from previous dates, I’m trying not to get my hopes up:

Of course, a new month brings new releases from my favorite Harlequin Presents and Dare authors. Clare Connelly’s HARDEN MY HART (from Dare) is the next in her series about the Hart siblings. The previous book in the series was really dull, so I’m hoping Connelly gets back on track with this one. Meanwhile, Jackie Ashenden has a new HP, THE MOST POWERFUL OF KINGS, obviously a royal romance. The hero here is the brother of the hero in her previous HP, PROMOTED TO HIS PRINCESS, which I liked very much, so I’m hoping she continues her streak.

September 15 is going to drain my book budget if all of these books do make their publication date: Skye Warren’s GOLDMINE, the second of a three-book series that started with DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH; J. Kenner’s MY FALLEN SAINT, the start of a new trilogy (and pricey for an ebook, $6.99–that may have to go to the “wait for a sale” list); Ainsley Booth’s much-postponed FILTHY LIAR, the fifth and final of her Forbidden Bodyguards series; and Natasha Knight’s UNHOLY INTENT—the first book of the duet, UNHOLY UNION, is out now, but I prefer to wait and read both books together.

Rachel Reid’s COMMON GOAL, her next m/m hockey romance, is scheduled for September 21. One of the heroes is apparently a retired player and the book appears to include the age-gap trope.

At the end of the month, Annika Martin concludes her Billionaires of Manhattan series with the fifth and final installment, RETURN BILLIONAIRE TO SENDER. We saw a little of the book’s h&h as background characters in the previous book, THE BILLIONAIRE’S FAKE FIANCÉE. The heroine is a mail carrier—which seems very timely right now.

Also at the end of the month comes CD Reiss’s CROWNE RULES, the next in her series about the Crowne family. In this one, the family’s black sheep son is staying in a house in Tuscany when a family friend, fleeing scandal, lands on his doorstep. Based on its description, this one appears to involve a D/s relationship.

I’ll have to read The Tragedy of Heterosexuality.

    But I wonder about this:
“Ultimately, she encourages straight men and women to take a page out of queer culture, reminding them “about the human capacity to desire, fuck, and show respect at the same time.”

My Bi and Ace daughters might disagree with this assessment considering all the discrimination and rejection they’ve faced from the LGBTQ+ communities. Unfortunately, being queer doesn’t erase some people’s need to control and exclude.

  5. Amanda says:

@DDD: “Not a Book” and “Nonfiction” are rather close together. Fixed!

  6. KatiM says:

I had two books on my list released today! Blood and Honey by Shelby Mahurin downloaded this morning and the new Star Wars Thrawn book is out for delivery. I should have taken today off to read.

  7. I’m intrigued by the cider bar book because I feel so left out of the microbrewery movement. I’ve never been a beer fan, but I love a crisp, dry cider. Throw in a good romance and it sounds like the perfect summer read! Thanks!

  8. Ren Benton says:

In addition to several you already covered, my list includes:

MASTER OF POISONS by Andrea Hairston on Sept 8. Epic fantasy with African folklore.

Also Sept 8, CHARMING AS A VERB by Ben Philippe. High school rom com.

  9. MaryK says:

I’ve been hearing good things about Jenny Holiday and I like royalty books so I’ve got A Princess for Christmas on my calendar for 9/15. And book 5 in Honor Raconteur’s Henri Davenforth series comes out sometime this month with no firm release date.

  10. Frida says:

Love and Pretence by Stefanie Simpson is out next week and it looks like it’s a childhood friends to enemies to lovers with femdom and fake dating.

  11. DonnaMarie says:

A Deception at Thornecrest, the 7th Amory Ames mystery is the only book on my early September list. I’m about two books behind here, and the blurb is a bit of a spoiler as Amory and Milo are noted to be anticipating the arrival of the plot device that ruins a good mystery solving couple. Sigh.

  12. Crystal says:

This week (month, year, life) is a book-buying bloodbath for me. Let’s see, today I copped When No One Is Watching and The Inheritance Games from the above list, along with None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney and A Rogue of One’s Own by Evie Dunmore. Then there’s the rest of the month, in which I know I’ve preordered that new Ruth Ware, Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (I was a pretty big fan of both Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and The Ladies of Grace Adieu, and Piranesi sounds weird as hell, but the woman can write), The Duke Who Didn’t by Courtney Milan (I’m hearing rumors about banter, and I always live for banter), Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots, The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett, A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, and Battle Ground by Jim Butcher.

    I know, it’s appalling.

  13. Susan says:

I am sooo far behind in my reading this year, but there are so many tempting books here. Sneezy, in particular, was on fire!

  14. […] releases: Tor.com (scifi, fantasy, horror/genre benders, YA SFF) and Smart Bitches […]

  15. Blackjack says:

I read an arc of The Deadly Hours and really enjoyed it. All are solid and work well together to explore a cursed gold watch traveling through Europe over a period of several hundred years, bringing death and destruction to nearly everyone unfortunate enough to cross its path. Susanna Kearsley’s novella is good, though C. S. Harris’s story is the best, I think, in the anthology.

I’m tentatively looking forward to A Rogue of One’s Own though I’ve been reading very mixed early reviews that discuss problematic content around racism and colonialism.

My other anticipated books are out in the second half of the month like The Roommate and The Duke Who Didn’t. Sept. is a good month for new releases.

  16. Qualisign says:

On Sept 7 or 8 Fredrik Bachman’s ANXIOUS PEOPLE appears. Bachman doesn’t do romance, per se, but he really does interrogate relationships with others and with oneself.

The blurb: “Rich with Fredrik Backman’s “pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope — the things that save us, even in the most anxious times.”
