Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: The Linguist & the Virgin

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO was sent in by Kimberlee, who wants to find a book that may have been mentioned on the site:

Long time lurker, first time sending in a request for HaBO!

I’m looking for a book that’s a historical romance, heroine is a linguist (or anthropologist) of some kind (if memory serves me correctly I think she has red hair?) who falls in love with a man she meets while out on an expedition. One unique thing is that the hero is a virgin, and the heroine helps him re-learn English and integrate him back in to society.

I’m fairly confident that I found the book through a Rec League on virgin heroes but I can’t be sure…in any event, I’d love to find the book again if I can! Thank you all in advance!

Talk about catnip!

    Watching…….

  2. Marie says:

    sounds promising. Watching …

  3. Julie B. says:

Sound kind of like “Wild at Heart” by Patricia Gaffney. The father was an anthropologist and the hero was raised by wolves and didn’t speak.

  4. Lara says:

@Julie B.–That was my very first thought.

  5. Kimberlee says:

@Julie B. It is in fact Wild at Heart! I just re-read the summary on goodreads and it call came back to me. Adding it to my TBR pile now, thanks a million 🙂

  6. Fiona McGier says:

If you like virgin heroes, try The Gazillionaire and the Virgin by Lisabet Sarai. It has more than a touch of BDSM, because it seems our virginal, overly-shy hero has a stash of that kind of porn, which the very rich heroine finds stashed in his apartment. I love steamy romance, and Sarai never fails to supply it.

  7. Yota Armai says:

Hmmmm it sounds like a Tarzan retelling? I have no idea what it is though. Fingers crossed the bitchery recognizes this one.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Slightly o/t, but this is something I’ve mentioned before when we’ve discussed virgin heroes: right off the top of my head, I can think of at least four contemporary romances where the hero is a virgin (or, at least, has never had p-in-v sex), but in all four cases, part of the enjoyment of the story involves the slow reveal of the hero’s virgin state and then going back to reread places where the author cleverly dropped hints regarding it. So, on the one hand, I’d love to recommend some very good romances featuring virgin heroes, but on the other hand, I don’t want to spoil the “virginity revelation” for anyone else since in all cases it’s an integral part of the storyline. Le sigh.

  9. Emily says:

Well crap, DiscoDollyDeb! Now I’m intrigued and REALLY want to read those books but I’m not sure how to find them! LOL

  10. DiscoDollyDeb says:

    @Emily: Exactly! That’s my quandary.

  11. Minerva says:

I really enjoyed Wild at Heart when it first came out. I still have the paperback which has survived multiple book purges. I need to reread it and see if it holds up.

  12. Yota Armai says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, make 8 book recs so we have a 50/50 chance of getting the right one? We’ll be primed but unsure?

  13. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Yota Armai: to me, it’s like telling someone who’s never seen “Citizen Kane” what Rosebud is or someone who’s never seen “Vertigo” who the shopgirl is. Part of the enjoyment of those movies is uncovering the secret yourself on first viewing. And, in each of the books I’m thinking about, the hero’s virginity is revealed slowly—it’s not like on page one he says, “Well, I’m ready to lose my virginity now.”

I think someone also mentioned that she had the same problem in books where the heroine doesn’t end up with the guy who seems as if he’s going to be the hero. You want to recommend the book, but you want readers to discover the surprise themselves.

  14. Kit says:

I know what you mean @DiscoDollyDeb I recently read a sci do romance with a virginal hero but to reveal it would be giving it away!

  15. LN says:

So maybe a rec league about books with big or unusual plot twists… I’d love to see that. There are so many many books that follow well trodden paths… so trodden they become ruts 🙂

  16. MaryK says:

I’d much rather have spoilers than miss out on a book completely. Maybe a spoiler rec league that people who don’t want spoilers can skip.

  17. Heather says:

I was thinking something similar, @MaryK. How about a Rec League for books with surprises? There would be no indication as to what the surprise might be, but it would allow us to list those sorts of books.

  18. MaryK says:

@Heather – There’d have to be a strict HEA Romance requirement. I’m not interested in “surprise, they broke up” or “surprise, she died.”

  19. Heather says:

    @MaryK – agreed!

  20. Zoe says:

@DiscoDollyDeb can we DM you for the recs? I truly don’t mind spoilers but I really want to read these!

  21. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Zoe: Sorry—I’m not on any social media, but I do like Heather’s idea of a Rec League for “surprises” (and agree with MaryK that they should have HEAs)—although, of course, as soon as you see my name, you’ll know the refs all have virgin heroes, lol! Maybe I’ll get one of my daughters to post for me.
