Fantasy and a Historical Romance

  • To Steal a Heart

To Steal a Heart by K.C. Bateman

To Steal a Heart by K.C. Bateman is 99c! This is the first in a new series by Bateman (who also writes historical romances under Kate Bateman). It looks like a lot of fun and I think I’m going to snag this one for 99c. What about you?

A master spy and a beautiful thief find love and intrigue in each other’s arms. . .

Forced to do the bidding of a corrupt government minister, Marianne de Bonnard agrees to plant incriminating evidence in the offices of France’s most notorious spymaster. Under cover of night, the tightrope-walking thief puts her skills to good use—until her aerial stunt is foiled when her target appears in the window and, with consummate poise, helps Marianne off the wire and into his lair. The tremors that run through her body are not just from fear; there’s an unwanted frisson of desire there, too. But is it because of her elegant, wickedly handsome host . . . or his proposition?

Nicolas Valette has had plans for his graceful trespasser since he witnessed her unique skills at the Cirque Olympique. Sinuous as a cat, Marianne is perfect for his next mission, but she refuses his generous offer for fear of disobeying her family’s tormenter. When their mutual enemy auctions off her virginity to the highest bidder, Nicolas leaps at the chance to purchase her cooperation. Keeping her will be like trying to tame a wild animal, but what’s life without a little risk? Besides, Nicolas and Marianne both want the same thing: revenge—and, perhaps, something else that’s equally delicious.

  • Unnatural Magic

    Unnatural Magic by C.M. Waggoner

Unnatural Magic by C.M. Waggoner is $2.99! Ellen mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet and was drawn to its feminist magicians. However, I remember starting this one and finding it a bit slow for what I was hoping for at the time.

A “brilliant and terrifically fun”* debut novel brings an enchanting new voice to fantasy.

Onna can write the parameters of a spell faster than any of the young men in her village school. But despite her incredible abilities, she’s denied a place at the nation’s premier arcane academy. Undaunted, she sails to the bustling city-state of Hexos, hoping to find a place at a university where they don’t think there’s anything untoward about providing a woman with a magical education. But as soon as Onna arrives, she’s drawn into the mysterious murder of four trolls.

Tsira is a troll who never quite fit into her clan, despite being the leader’s daughter. She decides to strike out on her own and look for work in a human city, but on her way she stumbles upon the body of a half-dead human soldier in the snow. As she slowly nurses him back to health, an unlikely bond forms between them, one that is tested when an unknown mage makes an attempt on Tsira’s life. Soon, unbeknownst to each other, Onna and Tsira both begin devoting their considerable talents to finding out who is targeting trolls, before their homeland is torn apart…

  • Kingdom of Souls

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron is $1.99 at select vendors! This is the first book in a YA fantasy series and we talked about this one in a previous Cover Awe. We could all use a throne of skulls. Readers really loved the world Barron created, but warned of a cliffhanger.

A girl with no gifts must bargain for the power to fight her own mother’s dark schemes—even if the price is her life.

Crackling with dark magic, unspeakable betrayal, and daring twists you won’t see coming, this explosive YA fantasy debut is a can’t-miss, high-stakes epic perfect for fans of Strange the Dreamer and Children of Blood and Bone.

“Magnetic and addictive. This book is black girl magic at its finest.”—New York Times bestselling author Dhonielle Clayton

Heir to two lines of powerful witchdoctors, Arrah yearns for magic of her own. Yet she fails at bone magic, fails to call upon her ancestors, and fails to live up to her family’s legacy. Under the disapproving eye of her mother, the Kingdom’s most powerful priestess and seer, she fears she may never be good enough.

But when the Kingdom’s children begin to disappear, Arrah is desperate enough to turn to a forbidden, dangerous ritual. If she has no magic of her own, she’ll have to buy it—by trading away years of her own life.

Arrah’s borrowed power reveals a nightmarish betrayal, and on its heels, a rising tide of darkness that threatens to consume her and all those she loves. She must race to unravel a twisted and deadly scheme… before the fight costs more than she can afford.

Set in a richly imagined world inspired by whispered tales of voodoo and folk magic, Rena Barron’s captivating debut is the beginning of a thrilling saga about a girl caught between gods, monsters, and the gift and the curse of power.

  • Nocturna

    Nocturna by Maya Motayne

Nocturna by Maya Motayne is $1.99! I picked this one for May 2019’s Hide Your Wallet because the premise sounded really neat. Readers warn that this one has a pretty slow build to any action, but others loved the world building.

The first in a sweeping and epic own voices debut fantasy trilogy—set in a stunning Latinx-inspired world—about a face-changing thief and a risk-taking prince who must team up to defeat a powerful evil they accidentally unleashed. Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi, Leigh Bardugo, and V. E. Schwab.

To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks.

As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever.

After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic.

But when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they accidentally unlock a terrible, ancient power—which, if not contained, will devour the world. And with Castallan’s fate in their hands, Alfie and Finn must race to vanquish what they have unleashed, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.

  1. Lisa F says:

RE Bateman – I liked the first one in the series better than the last, to be honest! Go for this volume vs the next.

  2. Penny says:

The cover of To Steal a Heart… her body language makes me think of Madeline Kahn in Young Frankenstein… “Not on the lips! …The hair! The hair! It’s been set!”

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Penny: I was thinking the male model looks like he’s worried he’s going to get girl cooties.

  4. Penny says:

@DiscoDollyDeb For sure… his bicep seems pretty flexed, like he’s trying to pull himself forward while his body is holding back. What is going on here?

  5. Heather says:

I agree! I love what they’ve done with the colors on the TSaH cover, but the body language of both of the models is sooooo uncomfortable.

  6. Jacqueline says:

There’s another version of the cover! A woman in a state of deshabille, her back exposed, and a pair of very strapping looking male hands dipping down her waist. The colors are meh, but there’s chemistry.

  7. Blackjack says:

I liked To Steal a Heart, though other Bateman books haven’t quite worked as well for me.

I agree with Jacqueline that the original edition had a lovely cover.
