If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.
Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.
We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.
As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

No more mortifying acne—though she still bears the scars—and no more trying to be invisible. She has two goals: get into med school and have sex before graduation. Amanda: I have a weird catnippy weakness for setups that require seduction lessons.

Angel De Cora, Karen Thronson, and the Art of Place
Author: Elizabeth Sutton
Released: March 16, 2020 by University of Iowa Press
Genre: NonfictionAngel De Cora (c. 1870–1919) was a Native Ho-Chunk artist who received relative acclaim during her lifetime. Karen Thronson (1850–1929) was a Norwegian settler housewife who created crafts and folk art in obscurity along with the other women of her small immigrant community. The immigration of Thronson and her family literally maps over the De Cora family’s forced migration across Wisconsin, Iowa, and onto the plains of Nebraska and Kansas. Tracing the parallel lives of these two women artists at the turn of the twentieth century, art historian Elizabeth Sutton reveals how their stories intersected and diverged in the American Midwest.
By examining the creations of these two artists, Sutton shows how each woman produced art or handicrafts that linked her new home to her homeland. Both women had to navigate and negotiate between asserting their authentic self and the expectations placed on them by others in their new locations. The result is a fascinating story of two women that speaks to universal themes of Native displacement, settler conquest, and the connection between art and place.
Sneezy: “…a fascinating story of two women that speaks to universal themes of Native displacement, settler conquest, and the connection between art and place.” SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!

Matzah Ball Surprise
Author: Laura Brown
Released: March 16, 2020 by Entangled: Love Struck
Genre: Contemporary Romance, RomanceThis Passover is starting to feel like the ten plagues might be coming back to haunt them before the weekend is over…one hilarious misstep after the next.
Gaby Fineberg just wants to get through Passover Seder without her “well meaning” family playing matchmaker. She needs a date, just for one simple meal—that includes singing, the history of her forefathers, and not one bit of yeast. The hot guy at her gym would be perfect. He probably hates bread, anyway, with a body like that. But when she finally works up the nerve to ask him…he doesn’t hear a word she said.
Levi Miller is deaf and happily single. Initially, he doesn’t know why this beautiful woman is talking to him, but it’s clear she needs help—and suddenly so does he. In a very complicated situation, Levi finds a simple solution. Gaby will pretend to be his new girlfriend to bail him out, and he’ll return the favor. But he didn’t bargain for a family dinner quite like this one…
Aarya: I don’t think I’ve ever read a Passover romance before? Also, that blurb screams Aarya catnip.

Reborn Yesterday
Author: Tessa Bailey
Released: March 16, 2020
Genre: Paranormal, Romance
Series: Phenomenal Fate #1A timeless love story with bite.
It was a night like any other for funeral home director Ginny Lynn, until the exceptionally handsome—and unfortunately deceased—young man on her embalming table sat up, opened his emerald eyes and changed the course of her life forever, making her feel quite fluttery while he was at it.
Humans aren’t supposed to know Jonas Cantrell, or any vampire, exists. It’s kind of a major rule. Despite his instantaneous bond with perfectly peculiar Ginny, he has no choice but to erase her memories of their one and only meeting.
That was the plan. Before a reluctant Jonas can wipe Ginny’s mind clean, she reveals a secret that brings their worlds crashing together. Human and vampire. Past and present. Darkness and light. And while their love is strictly forbidden, it might be the only thing that can save them…
Reborn Yesterday is a standalone paranormal romantic comedy with a happily ever after.
Aarya: I love PNR but sometimes keeping up with a series with infinite books is exhausting. The fact that the blurb says Reborn Yesterday is a “standalone paranormal romantic comedy with a happily ever after” sounds perfect. I’m not sure how funny it’ll be (who the heck knows what romantic comedy means these days in the romance genre?), but sign me up for a funeral director/vampire romance.

The Degenerates
Author: J. Albert Mann
Released: March 17, 2020 by Atheneum Books for Young Readers
Genre: Historical: American, Young AdultIn the tradition of Girl, Interrupted, this fiery historical novel follows four young women in the early 20th century whose lives intersect when they are locked up by a world that took the poor, the disabled, the marginalized—and institutionalized them for life.
The Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded is not a happy place. The young women who are already there certainly don’t think so. Not Maxine, who is doing everything she can to protect her younger sister Rose in an institution where vicious attendants and bullying older girls treat them as the morons, imbeciles, and idiots the doctors have deemed them to be. Not Alice, either, who was left there when her brother couldn’t bring himself to support a sister with a club foot. And not London, who has just been dragged there from the best foster situation she’s ever had, thanks to one unexpected, life altering moment. Each girl is determined to change her fate, no matter what it takes.
Amanda: Reviews I’ve read of this have been overwhelmingly positive despite the heartbreaking material. Reviewers also mentioned it being well researched.

The House in the Cerulean Sea
Author: TJ Klune
Released: March 17, 2020 by Tor Books
Genre: Fantasy/Fairy Tale Romance, LGBTQIA, Romance, Science Fiction/FantasyA magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret.
Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages.
When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he’s given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they’re likely to bring about the end of days.
But the children aren’t the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn.
An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.
Aarya: My librarian friend Dena loved this book so much that it’s on the top of my TBR. For Klune’s romance fans: while this is categorized as adult fantasy, it has a satisfying m/m romantic arc that ends happily (the author has called it fantasy romance? Not sure what genre it’s in, but I know it’s romance-friendly).

Queerleaders
Author: M.B. Guel
Released: March 17, 2020 by Bella Books
Genre: LGBTQIA, Young Adult“Mack snuck a look at the cheerleaders just as Veronica took her place at the top of the pyramid. Time seemed to slow down as the cheerleader swung her long blond ponytail over her shoulder, pompoms high in the air…”

Even she has a hard time believing it. And Lila is not too happy about her friend’s sudden popularity with the cool kids.

Tara: I’ve been waiting for Queerleaders with zero patience since seeing the author promote it on Twitter like this: “Queerleaders is about a girl who vows revenge for being outed by the football team by stealing their cheerleader girlfriends. Think classic teen comedy, but a book.” I want this in my eyeholes now.

Genre: Gothic, Historical: EuropeanRebecca James unveils a chilling modern gothic novel of a family consumed by the shadows and secrets of its past in The Woman in the Mirror.
For more than two centuries, Winterbourne Hall has stood atop a bluff overseeing the English countryside of Cornwall and the sea beyond.
In 1947, Londoner Alice Miller accepts a post as governess at Winterbourne, looking after Captain Jonathan de Grey’s twin children. Falling under the de Greys’ spell, Alice believes the family will heal her own past sorrows. But then the twins’ adoration becomes deceitful and taunting. The City We Became
Author: N.K. Jemisin
Released: March 24, 2020 by Orbit
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Series: Great Cities #1Five New Yorkers must come together in order to defend their city in the first book of a stunning new series by Hugo award-winning and NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin.
Every city has a soul. Some are as ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York City? She’s got five.
But every city also has a dark side. A roiling, ancient evil stirs beneath the earth, threatening to destroy the city and her five protectors unless they can come together and stop it once and for all.
Maya: Based on a short story from How Long ’til Black Future Month, this start to a new series is about five people who are the physical manifestation of New York City’s soul and how they band together to fight an ancient evil.
Shana: Jemisin is one of my favorite sci-fi authors. This new series sounds fab, I love stories set in New York and the blurb makes it sound super imaginative.
Susan: I really loved the short story that this was based on, The City Born Great, with its fantastic magic and its love for cities, and I’m excited about getting to spend more time immersed in that setting!

The Last Human
Author: Zack Jordan
Released: March 24, 2020 by Del Rey
Genre: Science Fiction/FantasyThe last human in the universe must battle unfathomable alien intelligences—and confront the truth about humanity—in this ambitious, galaxy-spanning debut.
Most days, Sarya doesn’t feel like the most terrifying creature in the galaxy. Most days, she’s got other things on her mind. Like hiding her identity among the hundreds of alien species roaming the corridors of Watertower Station. Or making sure her adoptive mother doesn’t casually eviscerate one of their neighbors. Again.
And most days, she can almost accept that she’ll never know the truth—that she’ll never know why humanity was deemed too dangerous to exist. Or whether she really is—impossibly—the lone survivor of a species destroyed a millennium ago. That is, until an encounter with a bounty hunter and a miles-long kinetic projectile leaves her life and her perspective shattered.
Thrown into the universe at the helm of a stolen ship—with the dubious assistance of a rebellious spacesuit, an android death enthusiast on his sixtieth lifetime, and a ball of fluff with an IQ in the thousands—Sarya begins to uncover an impossible truth. What if humanity’s death and her own existence are simply two moves in a demented cosmic game, one played out by vast alien intellects? Stranger still, what if these mad gods are offering Sarya a seat at their table—and a second chance for humanity?
The Last Human is a sneakily brilliant, gleefully oddball space-opera debut—a masterful play on perspective, intelligence, and free will, wrapped in a rollicking journey through a strange and crowded galaxy.Amanda: Humans do have a way of ruining everything and this sounds like goofy fun.

Gaming Grace
Author: Piper Drake
Released: March 24, 2020
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romance
Series: Gone Wild #2All work and no play is no way to enjoy this cruise.
Executive Director Grace Kim figures this reunion with her college friends is the perfect excuse to prove that she knows how to keep work/life balance and enjoy the Caribbean, preferably with her pants intact.
Rich, sexy, brilliant Bryan Wu has an app for that, and he charms Grace into helping him test it. He offers seven days of the best vacation of her life (bonus, sizzling chemistry) before they return to reality, but he didn’t anticipate just how much of his heart he’d give her.
When an accidental error results in a humiliating video of her online, Grace must salvage her career and decide whether to erase Bryan from her memory forever or admit they brought out the best in each other.
Five friends. One singles cruise. So many sexy shenanigans. Be sure to check out all of the Gone Wild standalone books!
Aarya: I’m nervous about what “humiliating video” entails, but the cruise setup sounds sunny and perfect. It’s one of five books in a multi-authored series and they’re all being self-published on the same date (other authors are Katee Robert, Avery Flynn, Robin Covington, and Stacey Kennedy). I *think* every MC is part of the same college friend group.

Genre: Contemporary Romance, LGBTQIA, Romance
Series: Dreamers #4Juan Pablo Campos doesn’t do regrets. He’s living the dream as a physical therapist for his beloved New York Yankees. He has the best friends and family in the world and simply no time to dwell on what could’ve been.
Except when it comes to Priscilla, the childhood friend he’s loved for what seems like forever.

What she especially doesn’t want is to be stuck on a private jet to the Dominican Republic with JuanPa, the one person who knows her better than anyone else.
By the end of a single week in paradise, the love/hate thing JuanPa and Pris have been doing for sixteen years has risen to epic proportions. No one can argue their connection is still there. And they can both finally admit—if only to themselves—they’ve always been a perfect match. The future they dreamed of together is still within reach…if they can just accept each other as they are.
Maya: Been seeing on the Twitters how good this is and I’m always here for Afro-Latinx characters!
Aarya: I love that the series has mixed-pairings (first three books were m/m and this one is m/f with a bi protagonist). The core friendship (Nesto, Milo, Patrice, and JuanPa) anchoring the series has been wonderful, and I hope we see some familiar faces from previous books.

Hurricane Season
Author: Fernanda Melchor
Released: March 31, 2020 by New Directions
Genre: Literary FictionThe English-language debut of one of the most thrilling and accomplished young Mexican writers.
The Witch is dead. And the discovery of her corpse—by a group of children playing near the irrigation canals—propels the whole village into an investigation of how and why this murder occurred. Rumors and suspicions spread. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters that most would write off as utterly irredeemable, forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village.
Like Roberto Bolano’s 2666 or Faulkner’s greatest novels, Hurricane Season takes place in a world filled with mythology and violence—real violence, the kind that seeps into the soil, poisoning everything around: it’s a world that becomes more terrifying and more terrifyingly real the deeper you explore it.
Maya: All the CWs for violence against women. This story about the murder of a woman was based on a real-life crime in Veracruz, Mexico where a man said he murdered a woman because she was using witchcraft to make him fall in love with her. The Spanish-language version of this story was published in 2017 to great acclaim and its translation to German won an award in 2019. This is the author’s English language debut. I’m guessing there’s no happy ending here.

Other than Jemisin, the only book remaining on my March list is BINDING SHADOWS by Jasmine Silvera.
There are two rules: find a way to use your magic and never reveal it to anyone.
Hunting lost books is more than a job; it’s a way for Barbara to hide her powers in the mundane world of the university library. One misstep and she risks exposure to ruthless necromancers willing to destroy anything supernatural they cannot control. But the prickly new professor in charge of her latest assignment proves more than he seems, and rules are no match for her growing fascination.
After years of battling to cage the beast within him, Tobias returns to Prague and the safety of his pack of brothers. But keeping his family safe means never revealing his dual nature, not even to the irresistible research assistant with a nose for rare books.
When an enchanted book triggers unpredictable surges in Barbara’s magic, unleashing his beast may be their only defense against the malevolent spell buried in its pages. Now, a 400-year-old witch’s revenge threatens to reveal everything they’ve concealed. Trapped between a witch and a necromancer, Barbara and Tobias must choose: embrace the powers that could expose them or allow their secrets to destroy them.
I only just discovered that one of my favorites—Kate Canterbary—has a new book scheduled for March 31: MISSING IN ACTION. It’s an m/m romance between a covert agent (recuperating from a mission gone wrong) and a businessman. There is a connection to Canterbary’s Walsh Family series: the covert agent is Lauren Walsh’s brother and Shannon Walsh’s brother-in-law. I’m expecting Canterbary’s trademark heat, humor, and heart—and I hope she checks back in with the members of the ever-expanding Walsh family.
The latest mercy Thompson arrives on Tuesday, arch 17th. Can’t wait.
I just read Team Player by Julianna Keyes, a story about 2 really lonely (and adult! Yay!) people, and also a love story to baseball, which I don’t love in real life but now appreciate more. The loneliness and isolation of the main characters reminds me of the H and h in Love Lettering, there are real reasons they’re alone now. Anyway, I loved it so much I preordered the next book, Bench Player out March 30.
I’m waiting for Dear Enemy by Kristen Callihan and Breaking and Entering 101 by Honor Raconteur. Breaking and Entering 101 is book 4 in the Henri Davenforth series which is … fantasy mystery, I guess? It’s kind of quiet but fun. I thought book 2 had serious pacing issues, but I liked book 3 a lot better. I’m in it for the characters anyway.
@DiscoDollyDeb I believe the other lead in Canterbury’s new book is Tom, Shannon’s assistant, so hopefully we get to see some more of the Walshes and their shenanigans.
Matzah Ball Surprise and Thorn are SO GOOD.
@EmilyB: Thank you! I’m glad to know Tom’s going to have a romance now!
TJ KLUNE… I will read any and everything he writes, and am really looking forward to The House in the Cerulean Sea. That and his other two releases for this year (The Extraordinaries in May and Brothersong in August) are all at the top of my most anticipated in 2020 list! I’m not sure if I’m ready to say goodbye to the Ox and his Green Creek crew though!
Also, can’t wait for ‘Badger to the Bone’ so I can devour the Honey Badgers trilogy… Shelley Laurenston is totally my comedic catnip, I’m one of those who finds the utterly ridiculous nature of many of her characters and their personalities the absolute draw for her books.
And The Degenerates sounds like it will be heartbreaking and I’ve not heard about that one before. Thanks 🙂
There are many books that come out tomorrow (!! Can’t wait!) that are very needed in my life currently. I’ve signed a contract to start a new job in a new city but my old job fired me the day I signed –and as a good girl, I was supposed to give 45 days notice, so now I’m sans pay for 5 weeks after a big move…
Anyway. Releases I’m looking forward to:
Smoke Bitten, by Patricia Briggs (TOMORROW)
Badger to the Bone, Shelly Laurenston (3/31)
Kindle Unlimited offerings:
Heart of Shadows, by Lisa Edmonds (Book 5 in the Alice Worth series) (TOMORROW)
Crypts and Crimes, Scarlett Dawn (book 3 in a series–mediocre but enemies to lovers and some lovely hate sex) (3/31)
I really thought there were more? But now I’m sad that there’s not more. 36 is a little young for memory loss, no?
[…] releases: Smart Bitches […]
I just started reading Isabel Morin’s A First Time for Everything, and it’s…quite delightful. Exactly what I need to console me during my coronafunk.
“The House in the Cerulean Sea” is fantasy with a strong m/m romance element rather than actual romance. Also, it’s fucking DELIGHTFUL and if you feel like your heart needs a hug right now, you need to one-click it NOW. It has precocious children with magical powers who are adorably terrible, a cat who gives no fucks, a shy and hapless paper-pushing hero who is actually a straight-up boss with a spine of steel, an evil bureaucracy in need of a stern talking-to, a sexy love interest who’s hiding a huge secret, and a message of inclusion. Buy it. Just buy it. You’re welcome in advance.
Now that I’ve actually read it, I agree with Jacki’s hard sell (#13) of TJ Klune’s wonderful, whimsical and very funny The House in the Cerulean Sea. But then, TJ never misses, and I’m so glad that by being picked up Tor his work is now being seen by a much wider audience. He is not just a great writer of queer fiction, he is a great writer of fiction PERIOD.
In particular, I loved the message we got in the book about the child character Sal, but am not sure if others picked up on that one.
Lots of options to read. Thanks dearies.
Also, how are people managing to use Zoom? I’m still stunned by people using the service. My rehab therapy service is using the service and I need to use speakerphone.
