  • To Best the Boys

To Best the Boys by Mary Weber

    Author: Mary Weber
Released: March 19, 2019 by Thomas Nelson
    Genre: ,

The task is simple: Don a disguise. Survive the Labyrinth. Best the boys.

In a thrilling new fantasy from the bestselling author of the Storm Siren Trilogy, one girl makes a stand against society and enters a world made exclusively for boys.

Every year for the past fifty-four years, the residents of Pinsbury Port receive a mysterious letter inviting all eligible-aged boys to compete for an esteemed scholarship to the all-male Stemwick University. The poorer residents look to see that their names are on the list. The wealthier look to see how likely their sons are to survive. And Rhen Tellur opens it to see if she can derive which substances the ink and parchment are created from, using her father’s microscope.

In the province of Caldon, where women train in wifely duties and men pursue collegiate education, sixteen-year-old Rhen Tellur wants nothing more than to become a scientist. As the poor of her seaside town fall prey to a deadly disease, she and her father work desperately to find a cure. But when her mum succumbs to it as well? Rhen decides to take the future into her own hands—through the annual all-male scholarship competition.

With her cousin, Seleni, by her side, the girls don disguises and enter Mr. Holm’s labyrinth, to best the boys and claim the scholarship prize. Except not everyone’s ready for a girl who doesn’t know her place. And not everyone survives the deadly maze.

Amanda says: It’s giving me very slight Mulan vibes. And if you didn’t know, Mulan is my absolute favorite Disney movie.

  • Woman 99

    Woman 99 by Greer Macallister

    Author: Greer Macallister
Released: March 5, 2019 by Sourcebooks Landmark
    Genre: ,

    She’s only a number now.

When Charlotte Smith’s wealthy parents commit her beloved sister Phoebe to the infamous Goldengrove Asylum, Charlotte knows there’s more to the story than madness. She risks everything and follows her sister inside, surrendering her real identity as a privileged young lady of San Francisco society to become a nameless inmate, Woman 99.

The longer she stays, the more she realizes that many of the women of Goldengrove aren’t insane, merely inconvenient — and that her search for the truth threatens to dig up secrets that some very powerful people would do anything to kep.

A historical thriller rich in detail, deception, and revelation, Woman 99 honors the fierce women of the past, born into a world that denied them power but underestimated their strength.

Elyse says: This novel is about a woman working to break her sister out of an insane asylum. I’m really interested in understanding how women’s mental health issues have been treated historically (awfully usually).

  • The Trial of Lizzie Borden

The Trial of Lizzie Borden by Cara Robertson

    Author: Cara Robertson
Released: March 12, 2019 by Simon & Schuster
    Genre:

The remarkable new account of an essential piece of American mythology—the trial of Lizzie Borden—based on twenty years of research and recently unearthed evidence.

The Trial of Lizzie Borden tells the true story of one of the most sensational murder trials in American history. When Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally hacked to death in Fall River, Massachusetts, in August 1892, the arrest of the couple’s younger daughter Lizzie turned the case into international news and her trial into a spectacle unparalleled in American history. Reporters flocked to the scene. Well-known columnists took up conspicuous seats in the courtroom. The defendant was relentlessly scrutinized for signs of guilt or innocence. Everyone—rich and poor, suffragists and social conservatives, legal scholars and laypeople—had an opinion about Lizzie Borden’s guilt or innocence. Was she a cold-blooded murderess or an unjustly persecuted lady? Did she or didn’t she?

The popular fascination with the Borden murders and its central enigmatic character has endured for more than one hundred years. Immortalized in rhyme, told and retold in every conceivable genre, the murders have secured a place in the American pantheon of mythic horror, but one typically wrenched from its historical moment. In contrast, Cara Robertson explores the stories Lizzie Borden’s culture wanted and expected to hear and how those stories influenced the debate inside and outside of the courtroom. Based on transcripts of the Borden legal proceedings, contemporary newspaper accounts, unpublished local accounts, and recently unearthed letters from Lizzie herself, The Trial of Lizzie Borden offers a window onto America in the Gilded Age, showcasing its most deeply held convictions and its most troubling social anxieties.

Elyse says: A glimpse past rumor and hype to examine who Lizzie Borden really was.

  • The Woman in the Dark

The Woman in the Dark by Vanessa Savage

    Author: Vanessa Savage
Released: March 12, 2019 by Grand Central Publishing
    Genre:

In the vein of The Couple Next Door, a debut psychological thriller about a woman who moves with her family to the gothic seaside house where her husband grew up — and where 15 years ago another family was brutally slaughtered.

Sarah and Patrick are happy. But after her mother’s death, Sarah spirals into depression and overdoses on sleeping pills. While Sarah claims it was an accident, her teenage children aren’t so sure. Patrick decides they all need a fresh start and he knows just the place, since the idyllic family home where he was raised has recently come up for sale. There’s only one catch: for the past fifteen years, it has become infamous as the “Murder House”, standing empty after a family was stabbed to death within its walls.

Patrick believes they can bring the house back to its former glory, so Sarah, uprooted from everything she knows, pours her energy into painting, gardening, and giving the rotting old structure the warmth of home. But with locals hinting that the house is haunted, the news that the murderer has been paroled, strange writing on the walls, and creepy “gifts” arriving on the doorstep at odd hours, Sarah can’t shake the feeling that something just isn’t right. Not with the house, not with the town, or even with her own, loving husband — whose stories about his perfect childhood suddenly aren’t adding up. Can Sarah uncover the secrets of the Murder House before another family is destroyed?

Elyse says: This books has a family fixing up a home known as “The Murder House” so you know I want to read it.

    Genre: ,

Fans of Danielle Paige, Marissa Meyer, and Alex Flinn will devour New York Times bestselling author Meagan Spooner’s next fierce fairy tale-inspired story, which Illuminae author Amie Kaufman calls “a kick-ass, gender-flipped feminist retelling.”

  • Burnout

    Burnout by Emily Nagoski

    Author: Emily Nagoski
Released: March 26, 2019 by Ballantine Books
    Genre:

What’s expected of women and what it’s like to be a woman today are two very different things – and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. How can you ‘love your body’ when everything around you tells you you’re inadequate? How do you ‘lean in’ at work when you’re already at 110% and aren’t recognised for it? This paradox isn’t going away any time soon, so let’s stop ignoring it and change our relationship to it.

Twin sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski are here to help end the cycle of inadequacy, overwhelm and exhaustion, to go beyond banal self-help platitudes (‘Practice self-care!’, ‘Set boundaries!’) and confront the real obstacles that are standing between women and well-being. Combining the latest science-based evidence with prescriptive advice and a good dose of humour they reveal:

    · how stress is a biological cycle that has to be completed before your body can return to a state of relaxation
    · why rest, human connection and reducing self-criticism are key to recovering from and preventing burnout
    · how to control the ‘monitor’ in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration
    · why the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies – and the easiest way to fight back
    · what you can start doing today to manage stress more effectively

Eye-opening, compassionate and optimistic, BURNOUT will completely transform the way we think about and manage stress, empowering women to thrive under pressure and enjoy meaningful yet balanced lives.

Amanda saysCome As You Are is one of my favorite self-help/nonfiction books and I’m so excited for this one.

Sarah says: This is cheating: I already read this because I interviewed Emily and Amelia Nagoski for the podcast, but y’all, seriously, this book is incredibly good. I cannot wait to hear what you think of it.

    Genre: ,

  1. MirandaB says:

    I’m looking forward to:

That ain’t Witchcraft by Seanan McGuire (next in Incryptid series)

Ambush by Barbara Nickless (next in Sydney Rose Parnell mystery series). She’s a former soldier turned railroad cop and has a Belgian Malinois army dog as a partner! You should probably read the first 2 in the series before this one, but both were good!

  2. Kathy says:

Or course the amazing Courtney Milan is releasing her Mrs. Martin’s Incomparable Adventure. I can hardly wait! Alyssa Cole has another instalment in the Reluctant Royals series, Can’t Escape Love. It’s a novella, which turns some off, but the others in the series have been great. Finally, Bella Andre has the next in the Sullivan’s series. I know she’s desperately ‘uncool’ but I do love them for pure D comfort reading.

Elyse: have you read FINGERSMITH by Sarah Walters? Part of it takes place in an asylum in the 1800s and it is terrifying. The book is very good, but dark.

I only see two books (so far) on my March “Can’t Wait” list: Caitlin Crews’s UNTAMED, the next in her Hotel Temptation series published through Harlequin’s Dare line; and Ainsley Booth’s WICKED SIN, the next in her Forbidden Bodyguards series (unfortunately, the h&h aren’t the ones whose story I’ve been waiting for, but when it comes to this series, I’ll take what I can get). There are a bunch of books I’m waiting for that have release dates this spring and summer, but March appears to be a bit of a dead zone for me, new-book-wise.

I have March 26 marked on my calendar since Courtney Milan’s new book is out that day!

  5. Mzcue says:

Sandra Antonelli’s second book in her Secret Service series is due out on March 29, titled Forever in Your Service. Antonelli’s leads are always smart, sexy and well into midlife. I love the originality, the intelligence and the tart dialog of her writing and how appealing Romantic Suspense—which is not my usual catnip—becomes in with this story about a spy and the woman who loves him. Highly recommend readers who enjoy romance among people who have been there and are surprised at how strong the desire is go again. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MXLJSH7/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1

@SBSarah, I share your enthusiasm for all things Speedwell & honey badger. Other than Wild Country, that’s all that’s on my can’t wait list. Although… Save Me From Dangerous Men sounds like it might be worth a twirl.

  7. Kathy says:

@Mzcue Sounds lovely. One click for the first in the series!

  8. Crystal says:

It’s hopefully a slow month for me (January and February were both what I call “preorder bloodbaths”), but I think I’ve got preorders sitting out there on That Ain’t Magic by Seanan McGuire and In a Badger Way.

  9. Julia aka mizzelle says:

“Kiss and Cry” by Mina V Esguerra hit my Kindle this morning. Figure skater and a hockey player.

  10. Amelia says:

Kiss and Cry by Mina V. Esguerra came out today! My pre-order just showed up on my kindle and I am DEVASTATED that I actually have to go do things other than read all day. h/h are a hockey player and a figure skater at the end of their careers. I grew up with a bunch of elite athletes so I’m excited to see that retirement transition handled as thoughtfully as the rest of Esguerra’s work.

Also, Courtney Milan is a goddamn national treasure and her novella game is on point. March 26!

  11. Amelia says:

@Julia aka mizzelle hahaha I probably should have hit refresh before just straight up echoing you but doubling the Esguerra love actually feels right.

  12. Kareni says:

I am REALLY looking forward to Anne Bishop’s new book. Lots of other good books on the horizon, I see.

  13. Lisa F says:

Woman 99 and Sherwood fell tragically short of the mark for me. On to To Best The Boys!

  14. Elizabeth says:

“Dogs and Goddesses” by Jennifer Crusie is on sale in March:

  15. Leigh Kramer says:

I’m reading American Dreamer right now and absolutely loving it! The only bad thing is Nesto’s food truck isn’t nearby while I read because it’s making me really hungry. I can’t wait to read Nagoski’s new book!

  16. Meg says:

The ninth installment in Cole McCade’s Criminal Intentions series is out on March 10th and I can hardly wait. Two hot, smart dudes; super slow burn over the first several books; one character consistently making the sort of bad choices that have you yelling, “Oh COME ON, Malcolm, get it together!” and (this is really important to me) really detailed CWs in the front of each book. Like, so detailed that I know if I’m going to need to basically close my eyes and skip ahead several pages at some point in the book. These are grittier than I usually read but the writing is so darn good and the characters, including the secondary characters, unfold in fascinating ways.

  17. Rhiannon says:

I have Jackie Lau’s Pi Day romance pre-ordered along with Alyssa Cole’s novella. I requested my library order the Nagoskis’ Burnout, so I’m first on the hold list 🙂

  18. sarahinsf says:

I don’t usually go in for self-help but I’m excited about how non-self-help-y Burnout sounds after reading this post. I’m definitely ready to understand stress as a biological cycle.

  19. RouRouRou says:

The final book in the Unlikeable Demon Hunter series by Deborah Wilde comes out on Tuesday! I love the series – funny, sexy, and a great work of paranormal romance. The main character Neva is so spunky, you cant help but root for her as she maneuvers through the Male-dominated world of demon-hunting.

I also pre-ordered The Dragon of New Orleans by Genevieve Jack from the description here on SBTB, and that comes out Tuesday as well.

  20. vasha says:

The amazing cover picture for Girls with Sharp Sticks is by one Daryna Barykina, to give credit where it’s due.

  21. Deianira says:

Pippa Grant’s “Flirting with the Frenemy” is next up in my romance queue, & Lila Mnroe’s “Best Man” will hit my Kindle on March 11th. Yay! Two of my favorite romance authors in one month!

  22. […] New releases: Tor.com (scifi, fantasy, young adult sff, genre benders) and Smart Bitches (romance) […]

  23. MaryK says:

Revisiting this thread to say I finally got my library copy of Wild Country and was sooo disappointed. I need to vent and I need an antidote STAT.
