Hate Notes
Author: Vi Keeland
Released: November 6, 2018 by Montlake Romance
Genre: Contemporary Romance, RomanceFrom New York Times bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward comes an unexpected love story of secondhand hearts and second chances…
It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress.
Something blue.
I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.”
Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.
The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most romantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there. Because I’ve since found out something else about Mr. Starry-Eyed.
He’s arrogant, cynical, and demanding. I should know. Thanks to a twist of fate, he’s my new boss. But that’s not going to stop me from discovering the story behind his last love letter. A love letter that did not result in a happily ever after.
But that story is nothing compared to the one unfolding between us. It’s getting hotter, sweeter, and more surprising than anything I could have imagined.
Something new.
But I have no idea how this one is going to end . . .
Amanda says: This sounds incredibly interesting! And definitely sexy.

Solace Island
Author: Sara Flynn
Released: November 6, 2018 by Berkley
Genre: Mystery/Thriller, Romantic Suspense, Romance
Series: Solace Series #1A contemporary novel with a strong suspense element from Oscar-nominated actress Meg Tilly set on a peaceful island village in the Pacific Northwest.
Dumped on the eve of her wedding and looking for a quiet place to lick her emotional wounds, Maggie Harris joins her sister on Solace Island, where she hopes to recover from the stunning betrayal. At first, Maggie resists Eve’s impassioned argument about relocating permanently so the sisters can open their own local bakery. What she definitely doesn’t need on her road to recovery are Eve’s efforts to fix her up with their mysterious and alluring neighbor, Luke Benson–even if he is incredibly handsome and desirable.
Just as Maggie starts to get comfortable in her new surroundings, a car tries to run her down in the middle of the street. If it weren’t for Luke’s extremely quick reflexes, Maggie could have been killed, leading her to wonder just who exactly Luke Benson really is…
Luke thought he’d left the violence of the high risk security world behind. But he can’t stand by while Maggie’s life is threatened. Luke will do anything to keep her safe–even moving Maggie and her sister into his house with its state-of-the-art security features. But with the secrets between them and an unknown threat stalking her heels, Luke will have to think fast to prove to Maggie that she can trust him with her life–and with her heart.
Elyse says: I’m really looking forward to this series debut described as contemporary romance with strong suspense elements.

Mammoth
Author: Jill Baguchinsky
Released: November 13, 2018 by Turner
Genre: Young AdultThe summer before her junior year, paleontology geek Natalie Page lands a coveted internship at an Ice Age dig site near Austin. Natalie, who’s also a plus-size fashion blogger, depends on the retro style she developed to shield herself from her former bullies, but vintage dresses and perfect lipstick aren’t compatible with prospecting for fossils in the Texas heat. But nothing is going to dampen Natalie’s spirit — she’s exactly where she wants to be, and she gets to work with her hero, a rock-star paleontologist who hosts the most popular paleo podcast in the world. And then there’s Chase the intern, who’s seriously cute, and Cody, a local boy who’d be even cuter if he were less of a grouch.
It’s a summer that promises to be about more than just mammoths.
Until it isn’t.
When Natalie’s hero turns out to be anything but, and steals the credit for one of her accomplishments, Nat has to unearth the confidence she needs to stand out in a field dominated by dudes. To do this, she’ll have to let her true self shine, even if that means defying all the rules for the sake of a major discovery.

Minimum Wage Magic
Author: Rachel Aaron
Released: November 9, 2018 by Aaron/Bach
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: DFZ #1The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder to cover the tab.
That’s when they call me. My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage with an art history degree who’s employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one—there’s a reason I wear bite-proof gloves—but when you’re deep in debt in a lawless city where gods are real, dragons are traffic hazards, and buildings move around on their own, you don’t get to be picky about where your money comes from. You just have to make it work, even when the only thing of value in your latest repossessed apartment is the dead body of the mage who used to live there.
Sarah says: A new story set in the world of her Heartstrikers series. I love stories that explore characters who have magic but not being ALL POWERFUL SUPERBEINGS.

My Sister, the Serial Killer
Author: Oyinkan Braithwaite
Released: November 20, 2018 by Doubleday
Genre: Mystery/ThrillerSatire meets slasher in this short, darkly funny hand grenade of a novel about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriends.
“Femi makes three, you know. Three and they label you a serial killer.”
Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.
A kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where Korede works, is the bright spot in her life. She dreams of the day when he will realize they’re perfect for each other. But one day Ayoola shows up to the hospital uninvited and he takes notice. When he asks Korede for Ayoola’s phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and what she will do about it.
Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite has written a deliciously deadly debut that’s as fun as it is frightening.
Amanda says: I’ve hard such great things about this from my reader friends.

The Dark Days Deceit by Allison Goodman comes out 11/20. This is the final book in the trilogy. I find the writing a little weak at times, but I like how Goodman shows the strictures of Regency life on all women, even a Chosen One.
I’m going to have to get a second (or third!) job if I keep expanding my tbr list. New books from Molly O’Keefe, CD Reiss, Willow Winters, Natasha Knight (yeah—I’m in the den of dark & angsty with Knight and Winters), Caitlin Crews, Sarina Bowen, and Keeland/Ward (I’d have to try HATE NOTES based on that cover alone). I guess I know what I’ll be doing during the Thanksgiving break!
Okay perhaps I’m projecting based on a prior bad relationship but “A Holiday By Gaslight” sounds awful to me….and I think the Rachel Aaron book should be “Minimum Mage Magic”
LOVE that there’s a new Bridgerton book out.
@Carol: I was thrown by “Gaslight” as well. Doesn’t everyone think of Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, or is it just me? Creepy.
MINIMUM WAGE MAGIC is already pre-ordered. I love everything Rachel Aaron/Bach writes.
I get an amazon error when I try to use your links on my phone, but the amazon site in my mobile browser works if I go there directly. Hopefully your affiliate links aren’t broken and it’s just me!
(Preordered the Balogh and Minimum Wage Magic)(And put Hate Mail on my library list!)
@Joanne: That’s really weird – I’m getting the error too. Thanks for the heads up!
Update: it seems to be the smile.amazon server, because links with http://www.amazon.com instead of smile.amazon.com are working. So it seems to be on their end. I’m sorry for the trouble!
And thank you for doing your book shopping through our links. You help keep the site in business when you do. Massive thanks!!
@Carol/@Darlynne — Me too. I don’t think I could bring myself to read a romance with “gaslight” in the title, unless it was somehow indicating an escape from gaslighting.
There are some really intriguing titles here this month! RIP, my fluff money. I’m even tempted by the Balogh, and I don’t usually care for her books. Does anyone know if I’d need to read the previous books in the series?
I’m SUPER excited about Hate Notes, and have been ever since I first heard about it. Also super jazzed about the new Bowen, because I’m a big fan of hers. A Holliday by Gaslight sounds fun, though I thought it was a collection of novellas at first because of how the description is broken up. And Empire of Sand sounds amazing!
But most of all, I am HERE for the hidden legacy novella! Come to Katie, little unsuspecting book.
@Anonymous – I think you would be okay with not reading the previous books. She is pretty good at weaving in enough backstory so that you’re not lost. I’ve read the previous books but have an awful memory, so it’s very helpful to me too!
House party holiday stories are my jam, but I’m also shying at “Gaslight” in a book title.
The Good, the Bad, and the Duke and Someone to Trust both landed on my Wish List today. My holiday reading may extend in to February at this rate.
Aside from the new Guild Hunter book that the mailman just deposited on my desk, the only books I’m looking forward to this month are The Cowboy from Molly O’Keefe and the latest Casey Daniels mystery from Kelley Armstrong, This Fallen Prey.
Although, Hate Notes is making my one click finger itchy.
MY SISTER, THE SERIAL KILLER is on my library holds list! I’m also chomping at the bit for:
– THE OMEGA OBJECTION by Gail Carriger (Nov 4) – continuation of Carriger’s m/m romance/urban fantasy series
– PULP by Robin Talley (Nov 13) – YA f/f romance in the 1950’s plus books!
– CREATURES OF WANT & RUIN by Molly Tanzer (Nov 13) – prohibition and a cult!
– SEDUCTION: SEX, LIES, AND STARDOM IN HOWARD HUGHES’S HOLLYWOOD by Karina Longworth (Nov 13) – of the You Must Remember This Podcast
– RIVEN by Roan Parrish (Nov 27) – rockstar m/m romance!
@Carol, agreed, “Minimum Mage Magic” was a missed opportunity. I may be biased there because I love puns so much that my cat’s costume yesterday was a “cat-torney at paw” who is “meowing for your rights!”.
@DonnaMarie: Fallen Prey is 2.99 on Kindle. The new one, Watcher in the Woods, comes out in February.
Lots of enticing choices above. Thanks for the list!
I like Mimi Matthews, so I preordered “Holiday By Gaslight”. And I’ll have to read “The Secret Orphan” too, partly because my mother and her brother lived with foster families near Coventry for a year in 1938-1939(they came to England on the Kindertransport).
I meant REND by Roan Parrish. It’s the follow up to RIVEN.
[…] releases: Tor.com (YA fantasy & scifi, adult fantasy, adult scifi) and Smart Bitches […]
@NCK I love puns too, especially cat-related. I am nightmare company. My cat is called Toby and he has really long arms (I refuse to call their front legs anything other than arms), so his future film title is Tobocop: The Long Arm of the Paw.
