A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna

    Author: Sangu Mandanna
Released: September 11, 2018 by Sky Pony Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Celestial Trilogy #1

In a universe of Gods and Goddesses, moons that hide ancient beasts, and cities built on the back of spaceships, infant Princess Esmae was cast into deep space, surviving only by the grace of a Goddess.

Raised far away from her birth home of Kali, Esme longs to return to her real family. And when the King of Wychstar issues a challenge, offering to gift his unbeatable, sentient warship, Titania, to a warrior that can win his competition, the way home becomes clear: she’ll help her brother, Prince Alexi, win the ship and consequently, win her place back in the arms of her family.

But when Alexi rejects, she instead enters as the champion of Max, who banished Alexi’s family from their ancestral home, waging a war that pits cousin against cousin.

And she does the unthinkable. She wins.

Now, Esmae finds herself on the wrong side of an inevitable war, with the Goddess-blessed Titania in the hands of her family’s enemies. Will she be able to reunite with her brother and learn why the queen banished her? Or will her family literally destroy itself, with the weapons she gave them?

Drawing on Indian mythology including the Mahabharata, A Spark of White Fire is a sweeping young adult sci-fi/fantasy retelling that stretches across the universe exploring love, friendship, and the complicated ties that bind families together, and rip them apart, in a world where Gods and Goddesses keep an eye on the stars . . . and the people they favor that fight among them.

Amanda says: Listen, there’s a sentient space ship. Leave me alone.

  • The Glass Ocean

The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams

    Author: Beatriz Williams
Released: September 4, 2018 by William Morrow
    Genre: , , ,

From the New York Times bestselling authors of The Forgotten Room comes a captivating historical mystery, infused with romance, that links the lives of three women across a century—two deep in the past, one in the present—to the doomed passenger liner, RMS Lusitania.

    May 2013
Her finances are in dire straits and bestselling author Sarah Blake is struggling to find a big idea for her next book. Desperate, she breaks the one promise she made to her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother and opens an old chest that belonged to her great-grandfather, who died when the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1915. What she discovers there could change history. Sarah embarks on an ambitious journey to England to enlist the help of John Langford, a recently disgraced Member of Parliament whose family archives might contain the only key to the long-ago catastrophe. . . .

    April 1915
Southern belle Caroline Telfair Hochstetter’s marriage is in crisis. Her formerly attentive industrialist husband, Gilbert, has become remote, pre-occupied with business . . . and something else that she can’t quite put a finger on. She’s hoping a trip to London in Lusitania’s lavish first-class accommodations will help them reconnect—but she can’t ignore the spark she feels for her old friend, Robert Langford, who turns out to be on the same voyage. Feeling restless and longing for a different existence, Caroline is determined to stop being a bystander, and take charge of her own life. . . .

Tessa Fairweather is traveling second-class on the Lusitania, returning home to Devon. Or at least, that’s her story. Tessa has never left the United States and her English accent is a hasty fake. She’s really Tennessee Schaff, the daughter of a roving con man, and she can steal and forge just about anything. But she’s had enough. Her partner has promised that if they can pull off this one last heist aboard the Lusitania, they’ll finally leave the game behind. Tess desperately wants to believe that, but Tess has the uneasy feeling there’s something about this job that isn’t as it seems. . . .

As the Lusitania steams toward its fate, three women work against time to unravel a plot that will change the course of their own lives . . . and history itself.

Elyse says: Some of my favorite historical fiction authors are coming together to tell a story around the sinking of the Lusitania.

  • Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

    Author: Christina Lauren
Released: September 4, 2018 by Gallery Books
    Genre: ,

Most men can’t handle Hazel. With the energy of a toddler and the mouth of a sailor, they’re often too timid to recognize her heart of gold. New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (RoomiesBeautiful Bastard) tells the story of two people who are definitely not dating, no matter how often they end up in bed together.

Hazel Camille Bradford knows she’s a lot to take—and frankly, most men aren’t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd don’t send them running, her lack of filter means she’ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. She’s a good soul in search of honest fun.

Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they met—when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes—to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air.

Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them…right?

Amanda says: This was the first book delivered to my new apartment and I think that’s a sign.

  • Two Dark Reigns

Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake

    Author: Kendare Blake
Released: September 4, 2018 by HarperTeen
    Genre: ,
    Series: Three Dark Crowns #3

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake returns with the highly anticipated third book in the Three Dark Crowns series! And while Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katharine all have their own scores to settle, they aren’t the only queens stirring things up on Fennbirn Island.

Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead—or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne.

Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the minland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.

Jules, too, is in a strange place—in disguise. And her only confidants, a war-gifted girl named Emilia and her oracle friend Mathilde, are urging her to take on a role she can’t imagine filling: a legion-cursed queen who will lead a rebel army to Katharine’s doorstep.

This is an uprising that the mysterious Blue Queen may have more to do with than anyone could have guessed—or expected.

Elyse says: I’m excited for the finale of this trilogy. I loved the first book, but the second one was a little meh.

Divorces are often messy, and Imogen’s is no exception. Phillip Rochester is controlling, abusive, and determined to make things as difficult as possible. • The Real Lolita

The Real Lolita by Sarah Weinman

    Author: Sarah Weinman
Released: September 11, 2018 by Ecco
    Genre:

A gripping true-crime investigation of the 1948 abduction of Sally Horner and how it inspired Vladimir Nabokov’s classic novel, Lolita

Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is one of the most beloved and notorious novels of all time. And yet very few of its readers know that the subject of the novel was inspired by a real-life case: the 1948 abduction of eleven-year-old Sally Horner.

Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the very first time. Drawing upon extensive investigations, legal documents, public records, and interviews with remaining relatives, Sarah Weinman uncovers how much Nabokov knew of the Sally Horner case and the efforts he took to disguise that knowledge during the process of writing and publishing Lolita.

Sally Horner’s story echoes the stories of countless girls and women who never had the chance to speak for themselves. By diving deeper in the publication history of Lolita and restoring Sally to her rightful place in the lore of the novel’s creation, The Real Lolita casts a new light on the dark inspiration for a modern classic.

Elyse says: Part true crime, part literary history, 100% Elyse bait.

    Author: Chrissy Teigen
Released: September 18, 2018 by Clarkson Potter
    Genre:

After the extraordinary success of Cravings, Chrissy Teigen comes back with more of her signature wit and take-no-prisoners flavor bombs.

Cravings: Hungry for More takes us further into Chrissy’s kitchen…and life. It’s a life of pancakes that remind you of blueberry pie, eating onion dip with your glam squad, banana bread that breaks the internet, and a little something called Pad Thai Carbonara. After two years of parenthood, falling in love with different flavors, and relearning the healing power of comfort food, this book is like Chrissy’s new edible diary: recipes for quick-as-a-snap meals; recipes for lighter, brighter, healthier-ish living; and recipes that, well, are gonna put you to bed, holding your belly. And it will have you hungry for more.

Cottonwood Hollow, Kansas, is a strange place. For the past century, every girl has been born with a special talent, like the ability to Fix any object, Heal any wound, or Find what is missing.

Best friends Rome, Lux, and Mercy all have similar talents, but to them, their abilities often feel like a curse. Rome may be able to Fix anything she touches, but that won’t help her mom pay rent or make it any easier to confide in Lux and Mercy about what’s going on at home. And Rome isn’t the only one. Lux has been hiding bigger, more dangerous secrets.

As Rome struggles to keep her friendships close, she discovers the truth about life in Cottonwood Hollow—that friends are stronger than curses, that trust is worth the risk, and sometimes, what you’ve been looking for has been under your feet the whole time.

    Amanda says: Magic. Friendship. Mysteries.

    Author: Beth Revis
Released: September 25, 2018 by Razorbill
    Genre: ,
Series: Give the Dark My Love #1

When seventeen-year-old Nedra Brysstain leaves her home in the rural, northern territories of Lunar Island to attend the prestigious Yugen Academy, she has only one goal in mind: learn the trade of medicinal alchemy. A scholarship student matriculating with the children of Lunar Island’s wealthiest and most powerful families, Nedra doesn’t quite fit in with the other kids at Yugen, who all look down on her.

All, except for Greggori “Grey” Astor. Grey is immediately taken by the brilliant and stubborn Nedra, who he notices is especially invested in her studies. And that’s for a good reason: a deadly plague has been sweeping through the North, and it’s making its way toward the cities. With her family’s life–and the lives of all of Lunar Island’s citizens–on the line, Nedra is determined to find a cure for the plague.

Grey and Nedra continue to grow closer, but as the sickness spreads and the body count rises, Nedra becomes desperate to find a cure. Soon, she finds herself diving into alchemy’s most dangerous corners–and when she turns to the most forbidden practice of all, necromancy, even Grey might not be able to pull her from the darkness.

Released: September 25, 2018 by Forever
    Genre: ,
Series: The Devils of Dover #2

After Waterloo, Eli Dawes, Earl of Rivers, was presumed dead-and would have happily stayed that way. He’s no longer the reckless young man he once was, and only half as pretty. All he wants is to hide his scars away in his country home. But when he returns home and tries to sneak into his old bedroom in the middle of the night, he’s shocked to find someone already there.

Rose Hayward remembers Eli as an arrogant rake who helped her late fiancé betray her. Finding him stealing into the house currently rented by Haverhall School for Young Ladies doesn’t correct her impression. Her only thought is to get him to leave immediately. Yet the tension between them is electric, and her painter’s eye can’t help but admire him, scars and all. He might be back from the dead, but now Rose will do anything to make him feel truly alive.

Elyse says: A scarred hero returning home from war. Totally my thing.

    Transcription by Kate Atkinson

    Author: Kate Atkinson
Released: September 25, 2018 by Little, Brown and Company
    Genre: ,

A dramatic story of WWII espionage, betrayal, and loyalty, by the #1 bestselling author of Life After Life

In 1940, eighteen-year old Juliet Armstrong is reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage. Sent to an obscure department of MI5 tasked with monitoring the comings and goings of British Fascist sympathizers, she discovers the work to be by turns both tedious and terrifying. But after the war has ended, she presumes the events of those years have been relegated to the past forever.

Ten years later, now a radio producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. A different war is being fought now, on a different battleground, but Juliet finds herself once more under threat. A bill of reckoning is due, and she finally begins to realize that there is no action without consequence.

Transcription is a work of rare depth and texture, a bravura modern novel of extraordinary power, wit and empathy. It is a triumphant work of fiction from one of the best writers of our time.

Elyse says: This novel has elements of a thriller and is set in WWII and shortly after.

  1. DonnaMarie says:

Many of these are already on my list (New Grace Draven!!), but I’ll ante up with a new Deborah Harkness, Time’s Convert, which takes place in the world of her previous books and Treacherous is the Night from Anna Lee Huber.

My GR feed still claims that the next book in Kristin Callihan’s VIP series releases on the 18th, but I have no faith that that is true, and I want that book sooooo bad.

  2. Christi says:

Just a quick FYI, the new Hank Green book is not YA, but geared towards adults. I think it’ll be pretty great, though. It’s getting stellar reviews!

  3. Frida says:

Apart from the new Olivia Waite (hell yes femdom!) I’m very interested in the new Jenny Holiday – Undue Influence, a contemporary m/m Persuasion retelling. Also, the new Vanessa North – Off Limits, which is the first in a very promising (i.e. the covers are cute) f/f series.

  4. faellie says:

    Kate Atkinson! Yes!

  5. sb says:

“Most men can’t handle Hazel. With the energy of a toddler and the mouth of a sailor, they’re often too timid to recognize her heart of gold.”

Men with the energy of a toddler and the mouth of a sailor?
Really, if you can’t even get a simple blurb grammatically correct, I’m not buying your book.
    That’s pathetic.

  6. Cassandra says:

I still have great book hangover from Magic Triumphs, but I think Lethal White for me. I just started watching the BBC Strike series and I love the casting of Strike and Robin so far. I’m curious to see what Galbraith (Rowling) will do with this installment.

  7. Amanda says:

@SB: Hey, you do you, but typically the authors don’t write the cover copy of their books. It’s typically editorial or marketing that does that; it’s been a while since I worked in publishing and my memory is a little fuzzy.

  8. Scene Stealer says:

This was an August release, but I just found out that Suzanne Enoch released, “Barefoot in the Dark.” The latest in her Samantha Jellicoe series. I DNF it, which disappointed me greatly because I had been looking forward to a new book in the series. I didn’t care about the story and Sam and Rick were boring.

  9. Cristie says:

@ Frida. A contemporary m/m Persuasion retelling?! I just pre-ordered this since it sounds like everything I never knew I always wanted. Thank you for putting it on my radar.

  10. Kareni says:

That Grace Draven book certainly does sound good. Thanks for this enticing list.

  11. Scene Stealer says:

I just read, “Leverage” by JD Robb. The story was okay, but the writing style was definitely different from previous books. There was a noticeable increase in curse words and way too many fragmented sentences that came across as lazy writing.

  12. […] releases: Bob Woodward’s book on tRUMP comes out this week. Smart Bitches (romance), Tor.com […]
