October’s New Releases

Is it officially fall yet? Because cooler weather means curling up with a good book, a fluffy blanket, and a warm drink, which is easily one of my favorite things to do. Below are some awesome books that the SBTB posse is totally pumped for, but here are some other important releases coming out this month:

  • New Margaret Atwood! Hag-Seed  ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) is a retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest
  • Charlaine Harris returns to her Aurora Teagarden cozy mystery series with All the Little Liars ( A | BN | K | G | AB )
  • Garth Nix’s Abhorsen series continues with Goldenhand ( A | BN | K | G | AB )
  • The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton is still going strong with book twenty-five – Crimson Death ( A | BN | K | G | AB )

And of course, we want to know all about what’s on your to-buy list this month!

Featuring the entire BEAUTIFUL series cast for one final hurrah!

A FREE-SPIRITED GIRL IN NEED OF A BREAK.
A MAN WEIGHED DOWN BY RESPONSIBILITY.
A ROAD TRIP VACATION WHERE ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Scaling the career ladder is the default way to deal with heartbreak—and to just deal—for Jensen Bergstrom. Absolutely buried by his drive and workload, he rarely takes time for himself. But when his sister Hanna convinces him to join the gang on a two-week wine tour, he has a rare moment of cutting loose. Of course, it’s only once he’s committed that he realizes the strange girl he met briefly on the plane is coming along, too. She might be too much for him…or he might realize his life has become too small and needs her to make it bigger, crazier.

With this circle of friends there’s always something going on: from Chloe and Sara’s unexpected personality swaps to Will’s new domestic side to Bennett’s text message barrage and George’s own happily-ever-after. In short, their adventures in love, friendship, and hilarity are nothing short of Beautiful.

Elyse’s says: Lauren’s books are an instant pick-me-up.

  • When the Moon was Ours

When the Moon was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

    Author: Anna-Marie McLemore
Released: October 4, 2016 by Thomas Dunne Books
    Genre: , ,

When the Moon Was Ours follows two characters through a story that has multicultural elements and magical realism, but also has central LGBT themes—a transgender boy, the best friend he’s falling in love with, and both of them deciding how they want to define themselves.

To everyone who knows them, best friends Miel and Sam are as strange as they are inseparable. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and rumors say that she spilled out of a water tower when she was five. Sam is known for the moons he paints and hangs in the trees, and for how little anyone knows about his life before he and his mother moved to town.

But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumored to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love. And they’re willing to use every secret Miel has fought to protect to make sure she gives them up.

Sarah says: The description reads like magical realism, fantasy and Southern gothic, with a trans lead character and witches – I’m so intrigued.

  • You Can’t Touch My Hair

You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson

    Author: Phoebe Robinson
Released: October 4, 2016 by Plume
    Genre: ,

A hilarious and affecting essay collection about race, gender, and pop culture from celebrated stand-up comedian and WNYC podcaster Phoebe Robinson.

Phoebe Robinson is a stand-up comic, which means that, often, her everyday experiences become points of comedic fodder. And as a black woman in America, she maintains, sometimes you need to have a sense of humor to deal with the absurdity you are handed on the daily. Robinson has experienced her fair share over the years: she’s been unceremoniously relegated to the role of “the black friend,” as if she is somehow the authority on all things racial; she’s been questioned about her love of U2 and Billy Joel (“isn’t that . . . white people music?”); she’s been called “uppity” for having an opinion in the workplace; she’s been followed around stores by security guards; and yes, people do ask her whether they can touch her hair all. the. time. Now, she’s ready to take these topics to the page—and she’s going to make you laugh as she’s doing it.

Using her trademark wit alongside pop-culture references galore, Robinson explores everything from why Lisa Bonet is “Queen. Bae. Jesus,” to breaking down the terrible nature of casting calls, to giving her less-than-traditional advice to the future female president, and demanding that the NFL clean up its act, all told in the same conversational voice that launched her podcast, 2 Dope Queens, to the top spot on iTunes. As personal as it is political, You Can’t Touch My Hair examines our cultural climate and skewers our biases with humor and heart, announcing Robinson as a writer on the rise.

Redheadedgirl says: Essays on race, gender, and pop culture from a podcaster and comedian.

    A Raven’s Heart by K.C. Bateman

    Author: K.C. Bateman
Released: October 18, 2016 by Loveswept
    Genre: ,
    Series: Secrets and Spies #2

August 1815. The war with France is officially over, Napoleon’s an exile on St Helena, but Europe is still a very dangerous place to be.

Kidnapped and held for ransom at nineteen, ducal heir William Ravenwood knows the only person he can rely on is himself. Now part of a spy ring that includes his friends Nicolas and Richard Hampden, he’s the smuggler known as The Raven, a ruthless agent who specializes in rescuing hostages and prisoners of war from captivity.

Raven longs to discover the fate of his colleague, Christopher ‘Kit’ Carlisle, who’s been missing, presumed dead, for over two years. He’s also equally determined to stay away from the one thing he knows is dangerous to his health – the bane of his life, his best friends’ infuriating and provocative little sister, Heloise.

Heloise is a brilliant code breaker, one of the English government’s most valuable assets. She’s also loved Raven for years, but considering that he rejected her at sixteen, before her face was scarred rescuing her brother from an icy river, she’s certain he doesn’t want her now, despite his outrageous flirting.

But when Heloise decodes a message that proves Kit is alive and a prisoner in Spain, Raven realizes she’s in grave danger. With French agents determined to silence her, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe – even if that means taking her to Spain with him as an unwilling hostage.

As they face French deserters and Spanish freedom fighters, Raven and Heloise try to ignore the simmering attraction that’s been building between them for eight long years. The differences between them are striking but they’ve always had a strange underlying bond. Heloise might be scarred outwardly, but Raven’s wounds are all on the inside. He knows he’s not worthy of her love—a shadowed Hades pining for sun-kissed Persephone—but he’s not above showing her passion for the short time they’re together.

A master at decoding complex messages, Heloise finds Raven frustratingly hard to read, but as their lives hang in the balance she’s determined to unravel his secrets and unlock his dark, elusive heart…

Redheadedgirl says: Spies and codebreakers and I hate you I hate you I hate you I can’t stop thinking about your hair DAMMIT so basically catnip all the way!

  1. Crystal says:

I need that Sherry Thomas to come out four days earlier when I’m getting a wisdom tooth out. Somehow Lady Sherlock and narcotic painkillers seem like two great tastes that would go great together.

Also, I’d throw out that Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff is out this month. I don’t know if anyone else read Illuminae but I was utterly unable to put that bad boy down. I looked like Belle walking through the village with that one.

  2. Becky says:

I have really enjoyed the Nine Kingdoms series. They pack a nice romantic punch while being very light on the sensual side. They are generally neck and neck with the Amish romances but with swashbuckling and magic instead of… a lot of pie. I am looking forward to being able to share them with my daughter. They engage me but would also be appropriate for any girl (or boy) entering their starry-eyed romantic phase. The women tend to find strength in unexpected ways- it’s not all about brute strength. I appreciate that.
My only caution would be that they have been solidly written as trilogies, thus far, and The White Spell would be the first in a new series. The cliffhangers haven’t been terrible but the storylines are not complete, either. But, within the series, you are generally fine to have read just that trilogy. You should be able to reasonably follow what’s going on without reading all 9 (soon to be 10) books although you’ll probably enjoy it more if you read the whole series. (The books move fairly quickly so that’s not quite the project it sounds like.) The middle trilogy about Sarah and Ruithneadh is weaker than the others, if you are going to skip, skip that.

  3. Kareni says:

What an enticingly dangerous collection of books. Hide your wallet, indeed!

  4. Joanna says:

Looking forward to the Sherry Thomas!

Also a heads up for the audible deal of the day – The Turn of the Screw read by Emma Thompson with the introduction read by Richard Armitage!

  5. DonnaMarie says:

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of Courtney Milan’s Hold Me downloading into my Kindle. Yay!! I’m dog sitting, the weather is crappy and I have a warm puppy, hot tea, comfy quilt plan.

Also looking forward to new books this month from Julianna Grey, Anna Lee Huber and the latest Maggie Hope installment from Susan Elia MacNeil.

  6. SandyCo says:

“Pansies” by Alexis Hall comes out on the 10th.

“Enjoy the Dance” by Heidi Cullinan comes out on the 11th.

“Interborough” by Santino Hassell comes out on the 24th.

What a lovely birthday month this is going to be for me! 🙂

  7. Ariadna says:

Seconding the excitement for Pansies and Interborough. Oh, and for When The Moon Was Ours.

Other books I’m all shiny-eyed about:

    * Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roherig (YA mystery featuring an MC who is a queer male) Oct. 4

    * A Most Novel Revenge by Ashley Weaver (3rd book in the Amory Ames mystery series) Oct. 11

    * A Darkly Beating Heartburn by Lindsay Smith (time-travel story with a bisexual Japanese-American young woman as the MC) Oct 25

    * Hotline by Quinn Anderson (NA M/M romance about a telephone sex operator and the guy he falls for) Oct 31

    * Tattoo Atlas by Tim Floreen (YA sci-fi about a teenage sociopath who gets “cured”. There’s an M/M romance between the leads) Oct 18

    * Iron Cast by Destiny Diría (YA historical fantasy about two young women who use blood magic. The MCs are WOC.) Oct 11

    * The Queer and the Restless by Kris Ripper (3rd book in the Queers of La Vista series. MC is a trans guy who works as a journalist. He’s trying to untangle a mystery.)

In short, October will be a TERRIBLE month for my wallet (and I couldn’t be happier.)

  8. Ariadna says:

*A Darkly Beating Heart NOT Heartburn. *Shakes a tiny fist of fury at autocorrect*

  9. SandyCo says:

LOL, Ariadna! 😀 Sounds like a chapter from “The Inner Workings of My Stomach”! No one is going to want to read that…

  10. Julia aka mizzelle says:

    On my radar:
    Ashley Weaver
    Juliana Gray
    Joanna Shupe

    Also new Connie Willis book!!

Second in Ken Liu’s silkpunk fantasy epic.

  11. Maria F says:

Penny Reid’s next Winston Brothers book, Beard Science, comes out 10/18.

  12. Beth Not Elizabeth says:

“Evelyn, After” by Victoria Helen Stone (Victoria Dahl). Kindle First available today! It is kinda dark… about 20% in.

  13. Cas says:

My TBR just toppled over but I’m adding more — thank you SBTR!
Silent Revenge by Laura Landon is 99 cents today in the US. The Black Moth by Georgette Heyer: there’s a free version and I did not know this.
    Happy reading!

  14. LML says:

    I’ve missed Aurora.

  15. Darlynne says:

So much love for Kurland’s Nine Kingdoms, but @Crystal, I am all over GEMINA. I read ILLUMINAE from the library and then bought the digital edition because I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters and story. I was concerned that digital wouldn’t convey the awesome-sauce of this epistolary tale, but that worry was unfounded. Cannot wait to see what happens next.

And uncharacteristically for me–always waiting for reviews–I pre-ordered Tracey Livesay’s book because it sounded great.

Thanks for all the links. My wallet isn’t even bothering to hide any more.

  16. Chris says:

@DonnaMarie: What?!?!? Hold Me?!?! Where?!?!?! Have been regularly checking Courtney Milan’s website looking for the release date…. If it’s out please help!!

  17. LauraL says:

I am so looking forward to Baron. I love this series!

Sign me up for A Raven’s Heart. Regency, spies and a second chance. HIde my wallet indeed.

  18. DonnaMarie says:

@Chris, sorry, spoke too soon. I had a plan, but assumed the release date hadn’t changed. So apparently it’s not out until maybe end of the month. Just as well as the doggie doesn’t like my reading any more than my typing.

  19. SonomaLass says:

I am excited about Sherry Thomas’s book!

Also, Victoria Dahl has her first book out under anew pen name, Victoria Stone. Evelyn, After, is not a romance,, but it is a gripping read. Free on Kindle First and only $1.99 right now.

  20. DonnaMarie says:

@Chris, also, sorry, Apple store. Too many books on too many devices!

  21. […] October’s New Releases […]

  22. Susan says:

Huh. I’m somewhat surprised that Harris is releasing a new Aurora Teagarden book after all this time. I read all of them back when, but don’t think I’ll read the new one. TBH, I thought Aurora was self-centered and awful. I can’t imagine her as a parent.

  23. Chris says:

@DonnaMarie – Thanks! I thought I was losing it there for a minute…. I will continue to wait patiently! The Year of the Crocodile was a nice little teaser but it’s had me hungry for the next full-length novel in the series!!

  24. Madge says:

Another peep excited for Gilded Age shenanigans with Baron. Railroads and seances – can’t wait for the romantic train wreck!

  25. Demi says:

Thank goodness for free samples on Kindle as I am trying to stay strong…my resolution is no more new book purchases for 2016 because Mt. TBR is toppling and the budget needs to be allocated elsewhere, like possibly attending RT..but THE PULL IS SO STRONG. SHERRY THOMAS TAKE THE MONEY AND GIVE ME THE BOOK NOM NOM NOM.
Also, Renegade Dragon is looking quite sassy with his hip wave.

  26. […] releases: Fiction Vixen (romance), Smart Bitches (romance), Tor.com (genre benders, fantasy, scifi), and Dear Author […]
