  • Connection Error

    Connection Error by Annabeth Albert

    Author: Annabeth Albert
Released: September 5, 2016 by Carina Press
    Genre: , ,
    Series: #gaymers #3

It’s typical of video game programmer Josiah Simmons to be the last one on the plane on the way to the biggest meeting of his career. Though he’s (mostly) coping with his ADHD, he can’t handle another distraction. But he also can’t ignore his rugged seatmate—especially once he learns the military man’s a fan of his game.

Ryan Orson refuses to let his severe injuries pause his career as a Navy SEAL. He’s got hours of grueling physical therapy ahead of him, and no time for anything that might get in the way of his return to active duty. But that doesn’t mean he’s above a little first-class flirtation with geeky-cute Josiah.

When a delay strands the pair in St. Louis, they agree to share a hotel room and a night of gaming. Neither expects their new connection to move to the next level in the light of day. Opposites may attract, but is this game over before it’s even begun?

Sarah says: I liked the first one, and the idea of two men stranded at an airport hotel deciding to spend the time gaming and not being attracted to each other? Forced proximity and I-don’t-want-to-like-you? Almost as good as being trapped in a blizzard.

  • Destined for a King

Destined for a King by Ashlyn Macnamara

    Author: Ashlyn Macnamara
Released: September 6, 2016 by Loveswept
    Genre: , ,
    Series: The Bastard Brotherhood #1

Bestselling author Ashlyn Macnamara, hailed by Jennifer McQuiston as “a born storyteller,” introduces the strapping, audacious outlaws of the Bastard Brotherhood in this enchanting tale of forbidden love between supposedly sworn enemies.

Though she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights. She even manages to sink a poison-tipped arrow into their commander, who survives long enough to conquer the Keep and claim Calista for his own. Now, with her father’s life at stake, Calista must nurse the brigand back to health, and the strangest thing happens: She finds herself fascinated by his tautly muscled body, and enthralled by his hotly whispered demands.

Ever since his father’s death, the fearsome warrior they call Torch has been consumed by his quest for revenge. Taking Blackbriar Keep is the first step in that plan, and—by the three gods—it won’t be the last. But after taking one look into Calista’s smoldering gray eyes, Torch discovers a passion nobler than retribution. He will fulfill his destiny and take her from the usurper king, even in his weakened state. For with Calista’s love, no man has ever felt more powerful.

Amanda says: I’m a sucker for the “nursed back to health” trope.

Released: September 13, 2016 by Gallery Books
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Broads Abroad #1

Avery Bardot steps off the plane in Rome, looking for a fresh start. She’s left behind a soon-to-be ex-husband in Boston and plans to spend the summer with her best friend Daisy, licking her wounds—and perhaps a gelato or two. But when her American-expat friend throws her a welcome party on her first night, Avery’s thrown for a loop when she sees a man she never thought she’d see again: Italian architect Marcello Bianchi.

Or is it just a temporary reprieve before returning to the land of twin-set cardigans and crustless sandwiches?

Amanda says: A fish out of water romance set in Italy with Alice Clayton as a co-writer! I also talked about how much I’m looking forward to this one on a previous podcast.

  • Where Am I Now?

Where Am I Now? by Mara Wilson

    Author: Mara Wilson
Released: September 13, 2016 by Penguin Books
    Genre: ,

For readers of Lena Dunham, Allie Brosh and Roxane Gay, this funny, poignant, daringly honest collection of personal essays introduces Mara Wilson—the former child actress best known for her starring roles in Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire—as a brilliant new chronicler of the experience that is growing up young and female

Mara Wilson has always felt a little young and a little out of place: as the only child on a film set full of adults, the first daughter in a house full of boys, the sole clinically depressed member of the cheerleading squad, a valley girl in New York and a neurotic in California, and one of the few former child actors who has never been in jail or rehab. Tackling everything from how she first learned about sex on the set of Melrose Place, to losing her mother at a young age, to getting her first kiss (or was it kisses?) on a celebrity canoe trip, to not being “cute” enough to make it in Hollywood, these essays tell the story of one young woman’s journey from accidental fame to relative (but happy) obscurity. But they also illuminate a universal struggle: learning to accept yourself, and figuring out who you are and where you belong. Exquisitely crafted, revelatory, and full of the crack comic timing that has made Mara Wilson a sought-after live storyteller and Twitter star, Where Am I Now?introduces a witty, perceptive, and refreshingly candid new literary voice.

Amanda says: Mara Wilson played Matilda and she’s amazing. If you’re not following her on Twitter, you should be.

Redheadedgirl: Mara Wilson telling stories of growing up, going from Matilda to The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home.

  • The Confectioner’s Tale

The Confectioner’s Tale by Laura Madeleine

    Author: Laura Madeleine
Released: September 20, 2016 by Thomas Dunne Books
    Genre: , ,

At the famous Patisserie Clermont, a chance encounter with the owner’s daughter has given one young man a glimpse into a life he never knew existed: of sweet cream and melted chocolate, golden caramel and powdered sugar, of pastry light as air. But it is not just the art of confectionery that holds him captive, and soon a forbidden love affair begins.

Almost eighty years later, an academic discovers a hidden photograph of her grandfather as a young man with two people she has never seen before. Scrawled on the back of the picture are the words “Forgive me.” Unable to resist the mystery behind it, she begins to unravel the story of two star-crossed lovers and one irrevocable betrayal.

Redheadedgirl: Temporally split story about the present characters trying to figure out the past character ALSO WITH FRENCH PASTRIES so basically this is probably under a box propped up with a stick and a string labeled “RHG look here!” so this is totally a trap. I will fall for this trap.

    School Ties by Tamsen Parker

    Author: Tamsen Parker
Released: September 20, 2016 by InterMix
    Genre: ,

Erin Brewster is nervous enough on her first day of teaching at Hawthorn Hill. But the way Zach Shepherd looks at her with his dark and dreamy blue eyes really throws her off her game. He simply has to walk past her to send her heart racing. Although he’s eighteen and a senior, he’s still just a student—and very off limits. To let her eyes linger over his body, to fulfill her fantasies would be more than inappropriate. It would be career suicide.

Three years after his graduation from Hawthorn, Shep has returned as a member of the faculty—and he hasn’t forgotten his favorite teacher, the prettiest woman he’s ever seen. When they finally have a chance to get to know each other, they realize they share a common interest: kink. In fact, Shep has learned a lot about the subject during his time away and is ready to teach Erin a thing or two. He’ll soon have her begging to be held after class.

As their relationship comes under scrutiny, the ties that bind Shep and Erin may begin to fray. But some bonds grow stronger under pressure…

Amanda says: Parker has been on my radar since Sarah reviewed Craving Flight.

  • Three Dark Crowns

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

    Author: Kendare Blake
Released: September 20, 2016 by HarperTeen
    Genre: ,
    Series: Three Dark Crowns #1

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

Amanda says: My roommate has convinced me that I need to read this.

Elyse says: This dark YA fantasy looks intriguing.

Nic wants to discount Jess Koirala’s story as absurd, but there’s something about her reckless desperation that resonates despite his doubts.

Jess has spent years working her way out of a nightmarish life in Calcutta and into a respectable Bollywood dance troupe. Now she faces losing the one thing that matters—her young son, Joy.  She needs to uncover the secrets Jen risked everything for; but the unforeseen bond that results between her and Nic is both a lifeline and a perilous complication.

Delving beyond the surface of modern Indian-American life, acclaimed author Sonali Dev’s page-turning novel is both riveting and emotionally rewarding—an extraordinary story of human connection, bravery, and hope.

Amanda says: New Sonali Dev! Seriously, she’s an autobuy at this point for me.

  • Do You Want to Start a Scandal

Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare

    Author: Tessa Dare
Released: September 27, 2016 by Avon
    Genre: ,
    Series: Spindle Cove #5

On the night of the Parkhurst ball, someone had a scandalous tryst in the library. Was it Lord Canby, with the maid, on the divan? Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall? Perhaps the butler did it.

All Charlotte Highwood knows is this: it wasn’t her. But rumors to the contrary are buzzing. Unless she can discover the lovers’ true identity, she’ll be forced to marry Piers Brandon, Lord Granville—the coldest, most arrogantly handsome gentleman she’s ever had the misfortune to embrace. When it comes to emotion, the man hasn’t got a clue.

But as they set about finding the mystery lovers, Piers reveals a few secrets of his own. The oh-so-proper marquess can pick locks, land punches, tease with sly wit . . . and melt a woman’s knees with a single kiss. The only thing he guards more fiercely than Charlotte’s safety is the truth about his dark past.

Their passion is intense. The danger is real. Soon Charlotte’s feeling torn. Will she risk all to prove her innocence? Or surrender it to a man who’s sworn to never love?

Elyse says: Tessa Dare is one of my go-to authors.

  • The Fall of the House of Cabal

The Fall of the House of Cabal by Jonathan Howard

    Author: Jonathan Howard
Released: September 27, 2016 by Thomas Dunne Books
    Genre:
    Series: Johannes Cabal #5

The fifth novel in the acclaimed, cult-favorite series starring Johannes Cabal, necromancer.

Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, has come into possession of a vital clue that may lead him to his ultimate goal—a cure for death. The path is vague, however, and certainly treacherous as it takes him into strange territories that, quite literally, no one has ever seen before. The task is too dangerous to venture upon alone, so he must seek assistance, comrades for the coming travails.

Assisted—ably and otherwise—by his vampiric brother Horst and by the kindly accompaniment of a criminologist and a devil, they will encounter ruins and diableries, mystery and murder, the depths of the lowest pit and a city of horrors. London, to be exact.

Yet even though Cabal has risked such peril believing he understands the dangers he faces, he is still underestimating them. He is walking into a trap of such arcane complexity that even the one who drew him there has no idea of its true terrors. As it closes slowly and subtly around them, it may be that there will be no survivors at all.

Elyse says: I love this series and I am so, so excited for this book.

  • The Perks of Loving a Scoundrel

The Perks of Loving a Scoundrel by Jennifer McQuiston

    Author: Jennifer McQuiston
Released: September 27, 2016 by Avon
    Genre: ,
    Series: Seduction Diaries #3

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer McQuiston continues her enchanting Seduction Diaries series as a bookish spinster and an unrepentant rogue unite to unmask a traitor

    Every girl dreams of a hero . . .

No one loves books more than Miss Mary Channing. Perhaps that’s why she’s reached the ripe old age of six-and-twenty without ever being kissed. Her future may be as bland as milk toast, but Mary is content to simply dream about the heroes and adventures she reads about in her books. That way she won’t end up with a villain instead.

But sometimes only a scoundrel will do.

When she unexpectedly finds herself in the arms of Geoffrey Westmore, London’s most notorious scoundrel, it feels a bit like a plot from one of her favorite novels. Suddenly, Mary understands why even the smartest heroines can fall prey to a handsome face. And Westmore is more handsome than most. But far worse than the damage to her reputation, the moment’s indiscretion uncovers an assassination plot that reaches to the highest levels of society and threatens the course of the entire country.

When a tight-laced miss and a scoundrel of epic proportions put their minds together, nothing can stand in their way. But unless they put their hearts together as well, a happy ending is anything but assured.

Elyse says: A bookish heroine? Sign me up.

  1. Olivia says:

I love September because that’s when the Christmas stories start coming out. Don’t know why, but I stupidly love Christmas romance stories. Was reading Maggie Shayne’s “Wake to Darkness” a few weeks ago, and just completely started thinking about the holidays. Wanted it to be fall so bad.

Lynsay Sands, Hope Ramsay, and Jill Shalvis (Holiday story!) also have books coming out this month.

  2. I loved Ashlyn Macnamara’s Regencies, so I’m pumped to read this new series of hers. I’m a sucker for anything with knights and castles, so DESTINED FOR A KING sounds right up my alley. And the new Sarina Bowen looks SO GOOD!

  3. You people are evil! Eeeeeeevvvvviiiillll! I need to hide my credit card when the first of the month rolls around!

*Sigh* At least I never have to worry about my TBR shelves being empty.

  4. JayneH says:

Jodi Ellen Malpas’s The Protector is on my September Highlights as well as HelenKay Dimon’s The Talented Mr Rivers.

Super intrigued by Rebecca Yarros’ Wilder. I read an excerpt, bonkers seems to be the keyword!

  5. Heather S says:

The new volume of Sunstone comes out on the 6th (according to Amazon). I can’t wait! Otherwise, when I can fit in some fun reading time with all the nonsense I have to read for my classes, I will probably be catching up on my Dreamspun Desires category romance subscription. I have a stack of paperbacks backlogged from September to March.

  6. BevQB says:

“Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall?”

I KNOW I can’t be the only one that wondered just what kind of Regency this is as I flashed to scenes from women’s prison movies.

    I’m going to Hell, aren’t I?

  7. Ren Benton says:

Ooh, how had I not heard of Johannes Cabal, Necromancer?

*looks at digital price of Book 1, which is $2 more than the paperback*

*forgets hearing of Johannes Cabal, Necromancer*

Random House hasn’t wanted my money for years.

  8. KateB says:

Seanan McGuire is the only author whose books I preorder these days. SO EXCITED.

So pumped for Illona Andrews, too!

  9. chacha1 says:

There is some tempting stuff in this list! The thing I’ve had on my wishlist forever is “The Hanging Tree” by Ben Aaronovitch, but I have to wait till January dammit.

Meanwhile my TBR has gone from “embarrassing” to “shocking” and I really should not buy any more books for a while … .

  10. Katie Lynn says:

I’m VERY excited about this month’s new releases. Rookie Move and Connection Error have been on pre-order since forever! (And if you haven’t read the Ivy Years series, go and do that! Trevi is in several of the books, and they’re mostly hockey related, though a few are just friends of hockey players)

Single Player by Elia Winters also comes out, it’s the third in the Slices of Pi series about some sexy nerds. The second one has a domme who works at a gaming company and a sub bakery owner. It was very good. The Goal by Elle Kennedy comes out, and I’ve also enjoyed this series.

And the one I’m most excited about? Empty Net by Avon Gale. An M/M about two goalies who are competing for the same spot as starter in a double-minor hockey team? And one of the heroes has an eating disorder?! It really can’t get more catnippy for me.

  11. I just finished reading Connection Error a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it as much as the other books in the series.

The Sonali Dev book was just delivered to my iPad thanks to Netgalley and I’ll probably read it this weekend.

Can’t wait for the new Tessa Dare and Jennifer McQuiston books.

The New In Death Novel is also coming out this month (Sept. 6th). I haven’t been crazy about her recent books (the last book being the exception), so I’m hoping this one will be good.

  12. Ariadna says:

Off the top of my head I can only think of two books and a short story I’m heart-eyeing so hard I’ve pre-ordered them:

    * Overexposed by Megan Erickson (Book 4 of the In Focus series)

    * Where We Left Off by Roan Parrish (Book 3 of the In the Middle of Nowhere series)

    * Green But For a Season by C.S. Pacat (the first of 3 short stories set in the Captive Prince ‘verse. This one is about Jord and Aimeric during Prince’s Gambit,a.k.a. the second book in the Captive Prince series)

Knowing myself, I’ll probably snag a few more books here and there. These ones are the ones I’m all *__* about, though.

  13. Susan says:

Any Tinker fans here? Wen Spenser has a new Elfhome book coming out next Tuesday (same day as the new Toby Daye book–aarrgh!). It looks as if it might be a short story collection rather than a novel.

My most anticipated book for the month, tho, is the new Ilona Andrews. I so wanted to take leave on the release day, but Sept/Oct is a really busy time of year for me and I just can’t do it. I’ll probably be wrecked from lack of sleep since I know I’ll start it as soon as it hits my Kindle. Same for next Tuesday–the day after the holiday, first day of school, early morning meeting, and 2 hot books dropping. I need to stock up on 5-Hour Energy drinks. 🙂

And thanks for the other book reccies here–I’m interested in quite a few.

  14. Mara says:

New Johannes Cabal?!?! *clickety click click*

  15. SandyCo says:

I read “Overexposed” through Net Galley, and it’s great. 🙂

I’m looking forward to “Loving You Easy” by Roni Loren, which come out on the 8th. It’s the latest in her “Loving on the Edge” series, and although I don’t usually like menage, she is the one author who can always change my mind.

  16. Emily A. says:

The last of Shannon Stacey’s Boys of Fall (Homecoming) series came out earlier this week. Super Excited! It’s my favorite series of hers.

  17. […] releases: Smart Bitches (romance), Gizmodo (fantasy & scifi), Tor.com (scifi, fantasy), Fiction Vixen (romance), AAR […]

  18. Julia says:

OMG. This is bad. This is really bad. I want to read every single one of these books. Some of these subgenres I don’t even like. Maybe it’s hormonal? It’s like I’m horny for books. Borny? Boorny?

  19. AmandaG says:

New Kate Daniels! *Grabby hands* Can’t wait!

  20. Kate Y says:

I have been waiting for Magic Binds since the minute I finished reading Magic Shifts last August. Almost there!!

  21. Saturngirl says:

New Toby *and* new Kate?!? I have already preordered Seanan’s Once Broken Faith, now I am scurrying off to preorder Magic Binds. I sorta wish they were staggered a bit, but the next few weeks will be bliss.

  22. Madge says:

    Should SBTB be renamed SBSFFB?

Two additional romances coming out this month: Dressed to Kiss, an HR anthology which includes Caroline Linden, pubs 9/12. As does the millionth (not really, but I’m too lazy to look up which number this one is) Shifters Unbound novel, Guardian’s Mate, by the prolific Jennifer Ashley on 9/6. (She’s almost as prolific as JD Robb.)

  23. Ulrike says:

    Magic Binds!!!!!!!!

  24. Demi says:

I think I binge read the first two Jody Wallace Maelstrom books…but only remember bits and snatches…wonder if I can dive back in with book 3? Hmmm…quandaries.

  25. Thanks for the information. I would like to know if it’s possible you mention my novel “What I like about Dublin” in new releases (October 15th).

    Thanks in advanced,

    Amanda Laneley
