    Sookie Stackhouse 8-Volume Boxed Set

The Sookie Stackhouse 8-Volume Boxed Set by Charlaine Harris is $12.99! That’s the first eight books in the much-loved series, which comes out to $1.62 per book – thanks to reader Heather S. for doing the math. For me, the series had a strong start, by my interest waned around book four or five. What does the rest of the Bitchery think?

Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is no typical Southern belle. She can read minds. And she’s got a thing for vampires. Which, in a town like Bon Temps, Louisiana, means she’ll have to watch her back—and neck…

    This boxed set includes:

    Dead Until Dark

    Living Dead in Dallas

    Club Dead

    Dead to the World

    Dead as a Doornail

    Definitely Dead

    All Together Dead

    From Dead to Worse

  • Whisper His Name

Whisper His Name by Elizabeth Thornton

Whisper His Name by Elizabeth Thornton is 99c! This is a historical romance with a heroine who deals in rare books, which is pretty neat. Some readers had trouble with the heroine and the frequent misunderstandings she had with the hero. But many seemed to enjoy the element of suspense and mystery in the historical setting.

Breaking the code to her heart…

Independent and stubbornly unmarried, Abbie Vayle has always been a little too smart for her own good.  But she may have gone too far when she starts her own rare-book business–and accidentally acquires an antique book in Paris with a mysterious code scribbled in the margins….

Someone wants the book back–and is willing to kill to get it.  The only trouble is, Abbie no longer has the book.  It’s locked away in the customs house in Dover.  Now it’s a race against time as Abbie stays one step ahead of her pursuers.  The last person she wants to confide in is her best friend, Hugh Templar, whom she knows only as a formidable scholar who shares her passion for Roman antiquities.

But as Hugh keeps turning up where she least expects him, a few things begin to dawn on her….Not only is Hugh surprisingly–in fact incredibly–handsome without his glasses on, but he’s strangely “professional” in how he handles her mysterious enemies.

Hugh is clearly not what he seems.  And soon Abbie realizes that neither is she…as she discovers what it means to love with all her heart and soul.

  • Exit Strategy

    Exit Strategy by Lena Diaz

Exit Strategy by Lena Diaz is $1.99 and the first book in her EXIT Inc. series. This book was mentioned on a previous podcast with Sarah, Elyse, and HelenKay Dimon, which was recommended by Dimon. Readers thought it had a good blend of suspense and romance, while others said it took a good chunk of the story to really get into it. Diaz’s Deadly Games mystery/thriller series is also on sale!

Lena Diaz launches her thrilling new series featuring the undercover vigilantes of EXIT Inc. with a skilled operative putting his life—and his heart—on the line for a woman in trouble…

When Sabrina Hightower awakens to the sound of an intruder, she figures he’s there to rob her, murder her— or worse. She doesn’t expect to be carried off by a muscle-bound stud with male-model good looks… or that he came to rescue her.

Mason Hunt became an enforcer with EXIT Inc. to eliminate the bad guys—terrorists, militia groups, all those who would do America harm. But his latest target is innocent. If EXIT could lie about sultry, strong-willed Sabrina, what darker truths might they be concealing?

Going rogue in the rugged North Carolina mountains, Mason risks everything to keep Sabrina close, especially now that EXIT’s lethal assassins are chasing them down. The heat is on… but it’s nothing compared to the slow burn of seduction.

  • Red Handed

    Red Handed by Shelly Bell

Red Handed by Shelly Bell is 99c! This is an erotic romance with BDSM elements. It also has hints of romantic suspense. Some readers found the dialogue to be a bit cheesy at times, while others admit that the plot is more complex than it seems. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

Shelly Bell returns with another steamy and suspenseful thriller set at the exclusive sex club Benediction …

An exhibitionist who’s waited her whole life to be seen …

After her stepmother is abducted, Danielle Walker has no choice but to follow the kidnapper’s cryptic instructions. Under the guise of a sex slave trainee, she must infiltrate Cole DeMarco’s BDSM club and find evidence of his offshore bank account … or she’ll never see her stepmother alive again. But Master Cole is no stranger, and despite the dark past they share, Danielle cannot resist his magnetic pull.

The voyeur who’s always been watching …

As Danielle begins uncovering Cole’s secrets, the artistic voyeur arouses her deepest desires, and she surrenders to a fiery passion she never expected. But with time running out to save her stepmother, Danielle and Cole will face off against an evil growing more ruthless by the day … and discover a twisted web of lies, betrayal, and murder that neither saw coming

Yes, there were a couple placeholders in the middle, but Sookie never lost her charm for me. The last book made it all worthwhile as I was never on Team Bill or Team Eric. I always knew who I wanted her to end up with. Okay, so I had that brief fling with Quinn. Who wouldn’t have a fling with a giant pansy-eyed weretiger?

Just found out that Deanne Gist’s “Tiffany Girl” has dropped to $1.99 on Amazon. This was reviewed here awhile back and generally liked.

  3. Katie Lynn says:

Coming in From the Cold by Sarina Bowen is free right now (at least at AMZ US). It’s quite good, I think it was her first novel. Professional skier who has lived his life thinking he has an incurable genetic disease because his brother and mother had it. The whole series is good, but the sex scene in the Jeep? Just…wow.

  4. Karin says:

OK, that hero in “Whisper His Name” sounds just like one of JAK’s contemporary heroes. He’s formerly some kind of hotshot spy/operative but now masquerading as a nerd, check. Wears glasses, check. Scholarly profession or hobby, check. Heroine in danger, check. Heroine runs some kind of arty, niche business, check. She thinks he’s a beta, but he suddenly goes alpha on her, check.
I think I just sold this book to myself, check.

  5. Mary Star says:

@Karin thanks for the gigglesnort! 🙂

  6. Qualisign says:

Agree wholeheartedly with Amanda’s assessment of the Stackhouse series. I loved the early books and uncharacteristically (for me) quit after book 5. I just couldn’t take the increasingly depressing relationships. While I am quite happy to see people taking control of their own destinies (both short and long term) the loss of hope/optimism in Harris’s later books is not compelling. However, I did follow her blog for a year or so and found it delightful.

  7. Heather S says:

I read the Sookie books one after another for the first 8 or 9. I finished off the series a couple of years later, and the last book left me all baffled. Like, where did that even come from?! But I found them absorbing and fun, with enough action to entertain the former Anita Blake fan in me. Unlike LKH, at least CH had the wits to end the series when she ran out of ideas, rather than turning out crap book after crap book just for the money. I binge read the first 8 books while I was deployed – someone had been kind enough to donate them all. 🙂 I am happy to have these on my Kindle now – I can trade in the paperbacks at my local store for credit. 🙂

The Charlaine Harris books are not on sale any more!! Was it only a one day sale? Anyway, I LOVED the whole Sookie Stackhouse series…all 14 books. I agree with everyone that the books were sooo much better than the True Blood series – except the casting – every actor was spot on(except for Tara and her mother, who were not major characters in the books).

    Show Spoiler
I SO wanted Sookie to end up with vampire Bill….and I adored vampires Eric and Pam. The whole series was vampire catnip for me!!!
  9. Beck says:

I’ve got to chime in on the Sookie Stackhouse books. The first book was really great. I also binge read as many titles that I could get my hands on. I’ve read them all (definitely a few misses in the series) but the last one. It’s on my Kindle but I just haven’t been able to read it yet. I was so upset after reading the next to last one that I just couldn’t deal with it. I think Charlaine Harris totally lost it the whole character of Eric in that one. She really neutered him. But… I still read her blog and book recommendations. I really enjoy it.

Her latest series? The first book was a huge disappointment. It was a DNF for me.

  10. Ele says:

I liked the earlier Sookie Stackhouse books better than the later ones, for the most part, but you definitely don’t want to stop at book 5! I think it was book 6 or 7 that was my favorite–

    Show Spoiler
where Sookie goes with the Queen of Louisiana’s retinue to the vamp convention (in Chicago maybe?) She gets to rescue both Bill and Eric (and make out a bit with Quinn) and have all sorts of heroic adventures!

And I, too, was happy Sookie ended up with Sam. (Yeah, Eric was a disappointment at the end, but hey, that was never going to work out anyway.)
