Historical Romances from Neville, Callihan, & More

  • Evernight

    Evernight by Kristen Callihan

RECOMMENDED: Evernight by Kristen Callihan is $1.99! Though technically this isn’t a straight historical and is more of a steampunk set in London, I’m bending the rules a little bit. This book is currently nominated for a RITA  in the Paranormal Romance category.

Guest reviewer, ElizaS, gave it a B-:

Ultimately, the second half of this book was an improvement on the first half, and I think it will be a more rewarding read for those who are sufficiently warned that, at least for this romance series, it’s fairly necessary to read each book that has come before this one.

Guest reviewer, DonnaMarie, gave it a B+:

The perfect blend of action and romance. Often one or the other of these suffers.  Here we have an engaging adventure that both informs and accents the romance, and a romance that grows because of what they learn about each other as a result of their adventures.

    Once the night comes . . .

Will Thorne is living a nightmare, his sanity slowly being drained away by a force he can’t control. His talents have made him the perfect assassin for hire. But as he loses his grip on reality, there is no calming him—until he finds his next target: the mysterious Holly Evernight.

Love must cast aside the shadows . . .

Holly cannot fathom who would put a contract on her life, yet the moment she touches Will, the connection between them is elemental, undeniable—and she’s the only one who can tame his bouts of madness. But other assassins are coming for Holly. Will must transform from killer to protector and find the man who wants Holly dead . . . or his only chance for redemption will be lost.

  • The Wild Marquis

The Wild Marquis by Miranda Neville

The Wild Marquis by Miranda Neville is $1.99! This historical romance is the first book in The Burgundy Club series and was talked about highly by author Sarina Bowen in a previous Whatcha Reading. Readers love the setting of “book collecting” and found the auctions instead of grand balls a nice change of pace. It has a 3.7+ avg on Goodreads.

The Marquis of Chase is not a reputable man.

He is notorious for his wretched morals and is never received in respectable houses. The ladies of the ton would never allow him in their drawing rooms . . . though they were more than willing to welcome him into their bedchambers. Ejected from his father’s house at the age of sixteen, he now lives a life of wanton pleasure. So what could the Marquis of Chase possibly want with Juliana Merton, a lovely, perfectly upstanding shopkeeper with a mysterious past?

    A moment’s indiscretion?

    A night’s passion?

    Or a lifetime of love?

Even the wildest rakes have their weaknesses . . .

  • The Importance of Being Wicked

The Importance of Being Wicked by Miranda Neville

The Importance of Being Wicked by Miranda Neville is $1.99! This historical romance is the first book in her Wild Quartet series. In short, a duke has his sights on a heiress but winds up falling for her cousin instead. Though readers loved the theme of badly behaved women, many seemed to take issue with the immature heroine. Has anyone read this one?

The rules of society don’t apply to Caro and her coterie of bold men and daring women. But when passions flare, even the strongest will surrender to the law of love…

Thomas, Duke of Castleton, has every intention of wedding a prim and proper heiress. That is, until he sets eyes on the heiress’s cousin, easily the least proper woman he’s ever met. His devotion to family duty is no defense against the red-headed vixen whose greatest asset seems to be a talent for trouble…

Caroline Townsend has no patience for the oh-so-suitable (and boring) men of the ton. So when the handsome but stuffy duke arrives at her doorstep, she decides to put him to the test. But her scandalous exploits awaken a desire in Thomas he never knew he had. Suddenly Caro finds herself falling for this most proper duke…while Thomas discovers there’s a great deal of fun in a little bit of wickedness.

  • The Secret Heart

The Secret Heart by Erin Satie

The Secret Heart by Erin Satie is $2.99! This is the first book in the No Better Angels series and the second book, The Lover’s Knot ( A | K | AB ), is was a nominee in the Historical DABWAHA category this year. Many reviewers say that this isn’t your typical historical romance, which is something that they see as a pro rather than a con, though some thought the author did more telling than showing. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

    She’s a fortune-hunter. He’s nobody’s prey.

Adam, Earl of Bexley, lives to work. His only relief is the sordid savagery of bare-knuckle boxing. Not women, and definitely not a disreputable, scheming woman who dances in secret with such passion…

Caro Small is desperate to escape her selfish family. Her only chance is a good marriage, and she intends to marry Adam—whether he likes it or not. But the more she schemes to entrap him, the more she risks trapping her own heart.

Adam won’t be caught by a fortune-hunter’s ambitious schemes. But the vulnerable, passionate woman underneath the plots might just bring him to his knees.

  1. Ren says:

I read The Importance of Being Wicked. She wasn’t particularly badly behaved, at least by historical romance novel standards. The guy was refreshingly decent. It was kind of a “quiet” book — nothing overtly terrible about it, but nothing thrilling, either.

The only things I remember complaining about are both of them being stupidly irresponsible with money — debtor’s-prison-in-five-years stupidly irresponsible, right to the end — and the Miracle Baby Epilogue.

  2. Lammie says:

I have read The Importance of Being Wicked, according to my Goodreads ratings, but I don’t really remember it. I gave it 2 stars, which means I finished the book, but didn’t really enjoy it. So, it didn’t annoy me enough to get a DNF, but I didn’t like it enough to give it a 3, which I would consider to be an average read. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend it.

  3. Melissa says:

Slowly adding to my Darkest London collection! Thanks.

  4. I just might go grab Evernight, since I have yet to finish that series. Thanks for the heads up.

  5. marjorie says:

I was in 3-star territory with both Evernight and The Secret Heart.

  6. ClaireC says:

$7 and more books go on the vacation reading list! I really need to read book #4 in the Darkest London series, so maybe having #5 on the Kindle will give me a kick in the pants. I am VERY EXCITE for the inventor heroine.

The Wild Marquis and The Secret Heart were both on my TBR list and how can I say no to book-selling heroines and bare-knuckle boxing heroes at those prices?

  7. chamekke says:

I started reading Evernight but couldn’t get past the butler calling his employer ‘mum’.

  8. Miranda Neville has become one of my favorite authors and I simply adored The Wild Marquis. I love characters who are trying to do the right thing.

  9. Taffygrrl says:

The Importance of Being Wicked was my favorite of the four novels in that series. I know everyone raved about The Duke of Dark Desires but it left me cold. I liked each book in that series a little less than the previous one.
