The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

The Heir Affair

TW: Miscarriage, infertility The Heir Affair is the follow up to 2015’s debut The Royal We, a book I enjoyed immensely. Unfortunately, while the humor and the narrator’s voice still worked for me, there was no character growth at all in The Heir Affair. A lot of things happen in the book, but the three main characters, Bex, Nick and Freddie all end up at pretty much the same place they started at. First of … Continue reading The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Red, White & Royal Blue

Reading Red, White & Royal Blue is an excellent reminder about why a couple’s chemistry isn’t the only thing that matters in a romance. This book has received positive buzz, and for good reason: the enemies-to-lovers romance is swoonworthy, the banter is witty and laugh-out-loud funny, and the epistolary aspect is a delightful surprise. Despite how much I enjoyed the relationship between Alex (the son of the American president) and Henry (a British prince), there … Continue reading Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Protect the Prince by Jennifer Estep

Protect the Prince

In Kill the Queen Jennifer Estep introduced readers to a fantasy world that was immersive and blissfully lacking in info-dump. It featured female gladiators, political machinations, and an underdog heroine. I really enjoyed Kill the Queen, so I was delighted to find that I loved the sequel Protect the Prince even more. It’s a blend of fantasy-adventure, romance and mystery, and I devoured it in a single day. You do need to read Kill the … Continue reading Protect the Prince by Jennifer Estep

A Prince on Paper by Alyssa Cole

A Prince on Paper

Reading A Prince on Paper by Alyssa Cole is like being wrapped in a warm fuzzy blanket. It’s filled with some of my favorite tropes, demonstrates enthusiastic opt-in consent, and features the heroine’s network of supportive female friends. It was great until I reached the end, which felt too rushed. You don’t have to read the other Reluctant Royals books before you start A Prince on Paper (this is book three), but they will introduce … Continue reading A Prince on Paper by Alyssa Cole

The Gown by Jennifer Robson

The Gown

TW/CW: sexual assault. I enjoyed The Gown: A Novel of the Royal Wedding by Jennifer Robson, mostly because it tackles a subject that is dear to my heart: why is traditionally-female created art  (think quilting, embroidering, knitting) labeled “a craft” and of less than value than male-produced art? As a historical novel, a full third of the narrative I found to be unnecessary, which meant there were parts of the book I had to slog through … Continue reading The Gown by Jennifer Robson

Princess of Zamibia by Delaney Diamond

Princess of Zamibia

I read Princess of Zamibia because it’s a romance between an African prince and an African American woman, and because it avoids negative stereotypes of African countries. I ended up being triggered and upset and a little bit murderous. Rant ahead. TW for kidnapping and rape. I’m angry, people, and anger is contagious. It’s OK to skip everything ahead. Short version is that the hero in Princess of Zamibia is an asshat. It’s my duty … Continue reading Princess of Zamibia by Delaney Diamond

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

A Duke by Default

I loved A Duke by Default so freaking much. This is the second book in Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series and it focuses on Portia, the best friend of the heroine of the first book, A Princess in Theory. A Duke by Default is fine as a stand alone although characters from the first book do show up. In the first book, Portia was introduced as a party girl who couldn’t stick to anything and who frequently … Continue reading A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

The Princess Trap

The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert made me feel really good. It was the read I needed for a crappy day and it went down like a hot cup of tea followed by a cookie. The pacing was a little off at the end, but my appreciation for an emotionally-fluent hero let me overlook that. Also the heroine wears a Dolly Parton tee shirt to bed and fuck yea, Dolly Parton. I do want to add … Continue reading The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

A Princess in Theory

I don’t know if someone at Avon went “Hey, you know what would be smart? Releasing this book around the same time as Black Panther!” or if it was a grand coincidence, but it’s brilliant synchronicity. Naledi Smith is a graduate student in epidemiology in New York. She has a tiny apartment, several jobs, two mice she rescued from a failed experiment, and a history of being shuttled from foster home to foster home. She’s … Continue reading A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

The Ladies, including the newest lady, who has a blue polka dot dress and glasses and is black

Special treat for your Monday: a beautiful cover to look at, and a book to one-click pre-order if the cover makes you as giddy as it did all of us! (Side note: is “OCPO” a thing, where you’re pre-ordering with a one-click frenzy so intense you bruise your one-click finger? Would that be OCK-PO? I think OCPO should be a thing.) You may have noticed a general excitement online regarding A Princess in Theory . I … Continue reading A Duke By Default by Alyssa Cole: Cover Reveal
