Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Noblewoman in a Love Triangle with a Soldier and a Pirate

This HaBO is from Liz, who wants to find this historical romance:

I have a very visceral memory of reading a historical romance (albeit a very PG/maybe PG-13 one) circa 2007 or so. It was set in the Colonial period, in the Americas, and featured a love triangle between a young noblewoman and, I think, a soldier, plus a smoldering pirate. I remember very clearly a subplot where the Strong Willed Young Lady™ has to go and hide among Native Americans before the pirate and the ostensible hero rescue her.

Any ideas? It’s been driving me crazy for almost twenty years that I can’t remember the title.

I’m very curious why she was hiding in the first place!

Could it be CATHERINE AND THE PIRATE by Karen Hawkins?

  3. Lindsay says:

Maybe DANIELLE from the Sunfire series?

  4. @SB Sarah says:

OH my gosh SUNFIRE. Every time I see one I am taken back in time so fast.

  5. Leah says:

I was going to suggest a Sunfire title as well, I feel like that sounded like a plot they used and there was ALWAYS a love triangle!

  6. Lucynka says:

Definitely not Catherine and the Pirate (no love triangle in that book, no Native Americans, and the titular pirate has in fact reformed long before the story even starts), but the Sunfire sounds promising!

  7. Possibly also MERRIE from Sunfire.

*cough* I know this for reasons.

  8. Late-breaking link to the MERRIE book https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1242830.Merrie

Confirmed from the hilarious reviews that Merrie DOES go to live amongst the Native Americans, but no pirate, just a sailor, and no soldier, just a doctor.

I was also going to suggest Danielle from the Sunfire series. It was the PG mention in the question that took me there. I think I checked all these out from my school library.

I was going to suggest the New Orleans-based SUNFIRE book as well!! *sigh* So many happy memories of reading these with my best friend when we were in our earlier teens.

No ideas, just crumbling to dust at the idea that 2007 was nearly 20 years ago

Cynthia Wright wrote a lot of these and she changed the names of some when she republished. They’re a little on the old school side, but she did do some updates.

Stolen by a Pirate was originally Heart of Fragile Stars. All of the Beauvisage books are set in Colonial America.

Some of her Raveneaus are also set in Colonial America.

I have been rereading some of the Sunfire books this spring (I teach US History at the college level and they were one of my American history starting places in elementary school). Danielle and Merrie were not on my reread list for Vivian Shurfranz Reasons but the description does sound like a hybrid of them. I am, however, pleased to report that I loved Caroline and Amanda as much as ever!

  14. @SB Sarah says:

Uh oh – @Abby, what are the Schurfranz reasons? Can you say or do you not want to discuss? Totally ok either way.

  15. Liz says:

    Thanks everyone!

I’d never heard of the Sunfire series before this, but Merrie sounds like a possibility. Doesn’t appear to be available as an ebook, so I’ll have to try and hunt down a physical copy at my local library. Will report back after!

And yeah, I did a double take when I counted the time from 2007.

  16. Liz says:

UPDATE: Having read the first page of “Merrie” that was available as a preview on the Internet Archive, I can definitely state that there’s no way I would have read beyond that. Holy exclamation point usage, Batman!

    The search continues!

Yes, now I am overusing exclamation points too! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  17. razzle07 says:

Song of the Sea by Jean Ferris?

  18. Liz says:

Ooh, sounds like a lot of boxes ticked, razzle07! But I don’t think so, based on the reviews I found. Alas.
