  • Just Some Stupid Love Story

Just Some Stupid Love Story by Katelyn Doyle

Just Some Stupid Love Story by Katelyn Doyle is $3.99! This is Scarlett Peckham’s penname for her contemporary romances. It came over during the summer. Did any of you read this one?

For fans of Emily Henry, a debut about a rom-com screenwriter who doesn’t believe in love and a divorce attorney who does, forced together at their high school reunion fifteen years after their breakup

Molly Marks writes Hollywood rom-coms for a living—which is how she knows “romance” is a racket. The one and only time she was naive enough to fall in love was with her high school boyfriend, Seth—who she ghosted on the eve of graduation and hasn’t seen in fifteen years.

Seth Rubinstein believes in love, the grand, fated kind, despite his job as, well…one of Chicago’s most successful divorce attorneys. Over the last decade, he’s sought “the one” in countless bad dates and rushed relationships. He knows his soulmate is out there. But so far, no one can compare to Molly Marks, the first girl who broke his heart.

When Molly’s friends drag her to Florida for their fifteenth high school reunion, it is poetic justice that she’s forced to sit with Seth. Too many martinis and a drunken hookup later, they decide to make a bet: whoever can predict the fate of five couples before the next reunion must declare that the other is right about true love. The catch? The fifth couple is the two of them.

Molly assures Seth they are a tale of timeless heartbreak. Seth promises she’ll end up hopelessly in love with him. She thinks he’s delusional. He has five years to prove her wrong.

Wickedly funny, sexy, and brimming with laughs and heart like the best romantic comedies, Just Some Stupid Love Story is for everyone who believes in soulmates—even if they would never admit it.

  • Boyfriend Material

    Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

RECOMMENDED: Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

I thought this book was lovely. It had real depth. There were characters who made me angry. Sometimes those characters were truly awful people and sometimes they were good people who made mistakes (hello, Luc, you mess). Sometimes the book made me sad. Mostly, it made me swoon and laugh in equal measure – a great stress read!

    Wanted:
    One (fake) boyfriend
    Practically perfect in every way

Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.

  • Wreck My Plans

Wreck My Plans by Jillian Meadows

Wreck My Plans by Jillian Meadows is $1.99! This is a holiday romance that came out last spring. The hero is the best friend of the heroine’s older brother, if that’s your catnip.

A sweet and spicy holiday romance between a spirited artist who returns to her small town for Christmas and her older brother’s best friend, a serious architect who pushes all her buttons—but whom she can’t seem to stay away from. Now with exclusive bonus content!

Lena’s plans are simple. Surprise her family for Christmas, don’t tell them she lost her job, and most importantly, spend the week relaxing with the people she cares about.

But when she arrives in Juniper, she discovers she’s not the only unexpected guest this year. Her older brother’s best friend, Gavin, is back after disappearing three years ago without a word. He has the kind of charm Lena has always been drawn to. But she knows he’s also the kind of temptation she needs to stay far away from.

Gavin has built his architecture career out of planning strategies for dealing with the unexpected—but he didn’t have a strategy for the possibility of seeing Lena again. Though he’s been dreaming of her since the day he left, he can’t risk giving in to his feelings when they could upend the only family and home he has ever known.

New plan: try to be friends again. Just friends.

But as the pieces fall into place about why Gavin left, staying friends is the last thing on his mind…and on Lena’s. All the plans they’ve made might end up completely wrecked. And for once, maybe they want it that way.

  • Just a Heartbeat Away

Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone

Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone is 99c! Aarya mentioned this one in a previous Whatcha Reading and mentioned it’s an age gap romance with a slow burn. Bastone’s books have been highly recommended in the comments.

    Some people change your life

    Others change your heart

Newly widowed dad Sebastian Dorner was unraveling at the edges—until his son’s teacher, Via DeRosa, threw him a lifeline. Now, two years later, they reconnect at Matty’s new school, and an inconvenient but unmistakable jolt of attraction crackles between them. But why does the first person to spark with Sebastian in years have to be a millennial? Is twentysomething Via really too young for him or does fortysomething Sebastian just feel too damn old?

A former foster kid, Via’s finally forged the stable life she’s always dreamed of—new job, steady income, no drama. The last thing she needs are rumors about her and a single dad at school. But why does she keep being drawn into his capable, worn-flannel orbit? And why does being around Sebastian, Matty and even their dog, Crabby, seem to spark so much want?

They’re trying to ignore the tension threatening their friendship. But sometimes what’ll heal you is just a touch—and a heartbeat—away…

  3. Kim says:

I really enjoyed the Bastone. Lots of excellent pining before the steam.

  4. Liz says:

HIGHLY recommend “Boyfriend Material”—one of my go-to recs, in fact—and “Just a Heartbeat Away,” along with really anything written by Cara Bastone.

Always loved Scarlett Peckham and was planning to give JSSLS five stars, but then the way things were resolved in the final act was actually really upsetting and I had to DNF. But it might not be as big of an issue for readers who haven’t had to work hard over many years to get past childhood trauma related to crappy parents (esp fathers) in the hope of being able to have healthy relationships in which you can really trust the other person to love you for who you are and not put their (his) wishes above your needs? :///

  5. Mzcue says:

@flchen1 Thanks for the warning about Mari Carr’s Wild Devotion. I’m skirting the heartbreaking stories these days when I can. Much appreciate your daily tips.

  6. FashionablyEvil says:

I found the humor in BOYFRIEND MATERIAL to be great, but the impetus for the MCs getting together is some hardcore homophobia, so if you’re on the lookout for pure escapism, proceed with caution on that front.

  7. Al R-B says:

I second FashionablyEvil: the banter in BOYFRIEND MATERIAL is top shelf. I laughed out loud several times reading it, and the audiobook is really well done too. HOWEVER, there’s enough homophobia and bad parenting in it to warrant several CW’s. Proceed with caution and self-care.

  8. flchen1 says:

@Mzcue–the whole series is really top-shelf entertaining big family romance, lots of friends, etc. But yeah, that particular story is brutal. Excellent, but expect to cry.

  9. Liz says:

Oh, thanks @FashionablyEvil! Completely forgot about CWs *facepalm*

  10. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@flchen1: because “angsty with a splash of melancholy” absolutely describes my preferred romance reading, I grabbed WILD DEVOTION. I hadn’t heard of it or the series of which it is a part, but I shall be reading it shortly. I’m always interested in how romance writers handle ambiguous or non-existent HEAs. Thank you for the heads-up. (Sorry, @Mzcue, lol.)

  11. drewbird says:

Agree with everyone else on Boyfriend Material – hilarious (the knock-knock joke that goes totally awry made me literally LOL), but the damage is there too.

    Also on sale:

    1.99
Devil’s Bride (Cynster Book 1) by Stephanie Laurens
    Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson (not a romance but the end of this one totally surprised me. LOTS of TW though)

    .99
Got Me Thinking (Vet Shop Boys Book 4) by Casey Cox
The Winner Takes All Complete Collection by L. Blakely
The Men of Summer Collection (Men of Summer – An MM Forbidden Sports Romance) by L. Blakely

    Free
Hell For Hire: Urban Fantasy Action with Witches and Demons (Tear Down Heaven Book 1) by Rachel Aaron

  12. FashionablyEvil says:

@Liz—I still really enjoyed it! It was just one of those books where it was a big enough piece of the plot that I thought it warranted mentioning.

  13. Kolforin says:

A solid set of covers on this batch! I love the illustration on JUST SOME STUPID LOVE STORY.

  14. Liz says:

@FashionablyEvil I’m glad you mentioned it! Always best to err on the side of caution with CWs. Tbh my memory is garbage, and what stuck with me the most was the humor/voice, romance, and utter skewering of the English aristocracy. Oh, and the delightfully British names! “Mum lives in Pucklethroop-in-the-Wold—this tiny, chocolate box of a village where I grew up—and spends her days getting into scrapes with her best friend, Judith Cholmondely-Pfaffle.” Chef’s kiss

  15. Star says:

Seconding the endorsement for the Bastone. It has a more organic feeling to it than I at least typically find in romance these days: light hand on tropes, realistic pacing, more character-driven, and characters that are ordinary people you might know. I loved it.

  16. flchen1 says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, eagerly awaiting your thoughts… Hope you enjoy the read!
