  • Fated Blades

    Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews

Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews is $1.99! Lots of Andrews fans here! This is book three in the Kinsmen series, which I’m not familiar with. Do these have to be read in order? Would love to know!

An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power―and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology. Expecting to suffer through their uneasy alliance, Ramona and Matias instead discover that they understand each other as no one in their families can―and that their combined skills may eclipse the risks of their forbidden alliance.

As the two warriors risk their lives to save their families, they must decide whether to resist or embrace the passion simmering between them. For now, the dance between their families continues―but just one misstep could spell the end of them both.

  • Unconquerable Sun

    Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliot

Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliott is $2.99! Ellen reviewed this one and gave it a B:

You can bet when I saw the words “gender-swapped Alexander the Great in space” used to describe a book, my immediate reaction was PUT IT IN MY EYEBALLS. Plus, it’s written by Kate Elliot, who wrote the totally amazing and ass-kicking Spiritwalker fantasy trilogy.

GENDER-SWAPPED ALEXANDER THE GREAT ON AN INTERSTELLAR SCALE

Princess Sun has finally come of age.

Growing up in the shadow of her mother, Eirene, has been no easy task. The legendary queen-marshal did what everyone thought impossible: expel the invaders and build Chaonia into a magnificent republic, one to be respected—and feared.

But the cutthroat ambassador corps and conniving noble houses have never ceased to scheme—and they have plans that need Sun to be removed as heir, or better yet, dead.

To survive, the princess must rely on her wits and companions: her biggest rival, her secret lover, and a dangerous prisoner of war.

Take the brilliance and cunning courage of Princess Leia—add in a dazzling futuristic setting where pop culture and propaganda are one and the same—and hold on tight:

This is the space opera you’ve been waiting for.

  • The Book of Koli

The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey

RECOMMENDED: The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey is $2.99! This is the first book in a trilogy. Carrie read this one and had this to say on a previous Hide Your Wallet:

Character driven and imaginative. Will never regard a tree in the same way again.

Beyond the walls of the small village of Mythen Rood lies an unrecognizable world. A world where overgrown forests are filled with choker trees and deadly vines and seeds that will kill you where you stand. And if they don’t get you, one of the dangerous shunned men will.

Koli has lived in Mythen Rood his entire life. He knows the first rule of survival is that you don’t venture beyond the walls.

What he doesn’t know is – what happens when you aren’t given a choice?

The first in a gripping new trilogy, The Book of Koli charts the journey of one unforgettable young boy struggling to find his place in a chilling post-apocalyptic world. Perfect for readers of Station Eleven and Annihilation.

  • The Wrath and the Dawn

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh is $2.99! This is a YA fantasy novel with romance elements and is a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights. Readers love the world Ahdieh built, but do mention there seems to be a love triangle in the first book that doesn’t quite work well.

A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

  1. Laurel says:

The Fated Blades series by Ilona Andrews are all loosely related, so I don’t think you have to read them in order. This is scifi/fantasy, so the world building done in previous books might help, but I don’t think reading them is required. I enjoyed the series. I don’t think it is quite as good as some of their previous series, but even average Ilona Andrews is better than a lot of other books. They are an auto buy for me.

I see Homefront by Jessica Scott is 99 cents on Amazon today. It is not my favorite book in the Coming Home series, but I did like it a lot. She writes military romance that has spoiled me for any other author in that genre. She is active duty military (I believe she teaches at West Point), and even though I have no experience with the military life, her books seem so authentic and real. This series also does not have to be read in order I don’t think, but characters from previous books do show up in other books.

  2. Elaine says:

I loved The Book of Koli – the entire trilogy is insanely imaginative and wonderful. You may want to try a sample – it’s written in the voice of the main character and if you can’t get into the voice, it’ll be a challenge. But I strongly recommend the series if you’re looking for something original and captivating.

  3. Escapeologist says:

The Wrath and the Dawn has been adapted into a graphic novel on Webtoon. I didn’t finish it, the power dynamics are not my cup of tea, but had to shout out the beautiful art and POC representation.

  4. Musical Trees says:

I read FATED BLADES without remembering any details from the other novellas and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend for great chemistry, fun world building, and fantastic sword play.

  5. Joy says:

I highly recommend FATED BLADES. If you think of a very energetic and hot Paso Doble, the swordplay dance scenes are easily visualized.
I like Ilona Andrews’ books but especially like the ones like FB and other Kinsmen books that aren’t part of their main series. I re-read the short story A MERE FORMALITY which is available on their website. It’s so funny–writing a whole story about smut.
To stall for time and having the bridegroom read a list of every possible sex act and decide whether he will ask his bride to perform it or not in the marriage contract–so funny.
