    Society’s most exclusive invitation…

Welcome to the Phoenix Club, where London’s most audacious, disreputable, and intriguing ladies and gentlemen find scandal, redemption, and second chances.

Dissolute rogue Tobias Powell, Earl of Overton, has just inherited a sheltered, proper young ward for whom he must find a husband. And that is only the start of his problems. His father’s will demands Tobias marry within the next six weeks, or he’ll lose his mother’s house, a treasure so dear that Tobias can’t consider defeat. Surely he can rehabilitate his scandalous reputation, secure a match for his ward, and find the sophisticated woman of his dreams before it’s too late. Except his ward is a hellion who cannot behave. She can, however, make him laugh.

Provincial Miss Fiona Wingate is eager to swap her boring small town for an exciting London Season. Until she realizes her new guardian, a dashing earl, plans for her to wed with the utmost haste. Fiona has no interest in marriage—she’s only just been liberated from her lifelong isolation! Moonglow by Kristen Callihan is $1.99! This is book two in the Darkest London series. I feel like we’ve only featured the first book in the series on sale. And this one and book four are on sale. I really enjoyed most of these books, though I didn’t end up finishing the full series.

  • Trade Me

    Trade Me by Courtney Milan

RECOMMENDED: Trade Me by Courtney Milan is 99c! We ran a joint review with Carrie and Redheadedgirl for this one, way back in 2015. They gave it a B+:

Carrie: What a fantastic book. I don’t know where to even start with the raving. The dialogue is so good that I have to resist the temptation to just quote the whole book.

Tina Chen just wants a degree and a job, so her parents never have to worry about making rent again. She has no time for Blake Reynolds, the sexy billionaire who stands to inherit Cyclone Systems. But when he makes an offhand comment about what it means to be poor, she loses her cool and tells him he couldn’t last a month living her life.

To her shock, Blake offers her a trade: She’ll get his income, his house, his car. In exchange, he’ll work her hours and send money home to her family. No expectations; no future obligations.

But before long, they’re trading not just lives, but secrets, kisses, and heated nights together. No expectations might break Tina’s heart…but Blake’s secrets could ruin her life.

  • Long Shot

    Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan

Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan is FREE! This is the first book in the Hoops series and features a basketball player hero. Basketball is a severely underrepresented sport in romance and I’m always happy to see more of it. Readers warn that there is a character background involving graphic descriptions of domestic abuse.

A FORBIDDEN LOVE SET IN THE EXPLOSIVE WORLD OF THE NBA…

Think you know what it’s like being a baller’s girl?
    You don’t.
My fairy tale is upside down.
    A happily never after.
I kissed the prince and he turned into a fraud.
I was a fool, and his love – fool’s gold.
Now there’s a new player in the game, August West.
One of the NBA’s brightest stars.
    Fine. Forbidden.

  1. Star says:

All the trigger warnings for Long Shot. I think it’s misleading to say that the domestic abuse is background, though? because that is very much part of the main story. When we first meet the heroine, she is in the early stages of that relationship, and we watch as it unravels in gory detail. The book does cover a much longer period of time than romances typically do, and there are a few time-jumps, but the abuse is detailed in the main timeline, not in flashbacks, and it is intense.

I was impressed with this book, because the author really did not flinch or take any of the easier/more typical outs in her depiction of domestic violence and abuse, but if you read it, definitely go into it knowing that it is pretty harrowing and that for a large portion of the book, you will be watching a bright, talented young woman go through absolute hell as her promising future is shredded around her by her abuser and by the various people and systems enabling him. No romance heroine has ever deserved a happy ending more than this one, and the hero, while flawed, is lovely.

(Unfortunately, I found the sequel unreadable because of its “hero”‘s sociopathic treatment of the heroine.)

I loved Trade Me by Courtney Milan. It’s a refreshing twist on a billionaire romance. But also I love everything she writes!

  3. Neile says:

I loved both HOOP DREAMS and TRADE ME. Both are powerful in their own ways, and I loved the romances.

Also, Elsie Silver’s PHOTO FINISH is free for a few days. She’s an author new to me from last year but an instant favourite even though I never thought I’d be a fan of horse ranch novels! I read her entire back list last year and now she’s an autobuy.

  4. Anne says:

I have recently finished Kristen Callihan’s entire Darkest London series. Thoroughly enjoyable, beautifully written, excellent world building and OMG the pining! And when the pining resolves…OMG the swoonworthy heat. I recommend reading in order, as all the characters are eventually involved in the stories. But each has it’s own HEA. Gorgeous.

  5. Musical Trees says:

I agree with @Star about LONG SHOT. It is well written, but I personally tagged it “do not re-read” because of the intensity of the domestic violence.

TRADE ME is fabulous. It covers a lot of issues – wealth, poverty, mental health, family dynamics, immigration, the difficulties of being a first generation American, and so much more. At the same time, it’s a great, really hot story! I feel as though I’ve been waiting absolutely forever for the sequel FIND ME, but there’s no publication date in sight.

  6. Ele says:

Trade Me was far outside my usual type of book–involving a college-age romance. However, I really loved it. In particular, the hero’s father and the heroine’s mother really stole the show. I keep reading other books in this series just to get more of Mr. Reynolds and Mrs. Chen. There are also some aspects of the book that are really unusual for a billionaire-type romance but it would be spoiler-ish to say too much about them, other than that they take on some pretty difficult issues.

  7. Susan/DC says:

Like Ele, I don’t often read NA but very much liked TRADE ME and loved Mrs. Chen. The cake she decorates for Mr. Reynolds makes whatever I paid for the ebook worth every penny. Unlike Ele, I didn’t like Blake’s father. The book was written before the whole Twitter mess, but Mr. Reynolds gives off definite Elon Musk vibes. Nonetheless, I’ve read all the available sequels and will read more if Ms. Milan writes them.

  8. Susan/DC says:

Re TRADE ME (Courtney Milan’s Cyclone series): Does anyone have any idea when the rest of the series will be published?

  9. oceanjasper says:

Regarding Long Shot: the problem with trigger warnings, as was discussed at AAR recently,is that the definition of a trigger warning is a bit fuzzy. I’ve seen book listings accompanied by a laundry list of trigger warnings that include some things that seem ludicrous to me, like ‘death of a pet off page,’ etc. My interpretation of a trigger warning is something that might occur in a book unexpectedly and upset some readers. But when the main plot of the book is that the heroine is in an abusive relationship when she meets and falls in love with the hero, that shouldn’t be something the reader encounters unexpectedly. The Amazon blurb for the book is ridiculously vague, especially given the tendency of romance reviewers to summarise the plot in detail (too much detail for me but I’ve resigned myself to not reading reviews of books I might actually want to read anytime soon). Anyone who’s not keen on reading about DV can skip Long Shot because it’s a huge part of the book but if you’re sensitive about some other issue that may blindside you, that’s what a trigger warning is for, preferably on the author’s website or somewhere obscure where it won’t be a spoiler for everyone else. (As soon as that little girl’s dog was mentioned I was waiting for it to be run over….)

  10. Emily B says:

Kennedy Ryan has been a must read for me ever since Long Shot and the Grip series, but the intimate partner violence in Longshot is a major part of the story and is definitely graphic. If you know you that’s not something you want to read but are still interested in some Ryan, might I suggest the All the Kings Men Duet (for Scandal-like sexy political intrigue), Queen Move (childhood best friends turned lovers get a second chance later in life), or Reel (for some Hollywood Black excellence). Her writing is beautiful and her female characters are always strong and competent.
