Hide Your Wallet

October 2022 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • A Turn of the Tide

A Turn of the Tide by Kelley Armstrong

    Author: Kelley Armstrong
    Released: October 4, 2022
    Genre: , ,
Series: A Stitch in Time #3

In Thorne Manor there is one locked door. Behind it lies a portal to the twenty-first century, and nothing is going to stop Miranda Hastings from stepping through. After all, she is a Victorian writer of risqué pirate adventures—traveling to the future would be the greatest adventure of them all.

When Miranda goes through, though, she lands in Georgian England…and in the path of Nicolas Dupuis, a privateer accused of piracy. Sheltered by locals, Nico is repaying their kindness by being their “pirate Robin Hood,” stealing from a corrupt lord and fencing smuggled goods on the village’s behalf.

Miranda embraces Nico’s cause, only to discover there’s more to it than he realizes. Miranda has the second sight, and there are ghosts at play here. The recently deceased former lord is desperate to stop his son from destroying his beloved village. Then there’s the ghost of Nico’s cabin boy, who he thought safe in a neighboring city. Miranda and Nico must solve the mystery of the boy’s death while keeping one step ahead of the hangman.

It may not be the escapade Miranda imagined, but it is about to be the adventure of a lifetime.

Aarya: I like the idea of time travel between two different historical eras (eliminating the 21st century altogether).

    Genre: ,
Series: The Curse of the Blood Moon #1

Returning to her beloved home of Salem after a trip away, Lucy Finch can’t shake the feeling of anxiety that suddenly plagues her. Nor can she shrug off her third eye’s urging that she has a mission she must undertake—a secret she must uncover.

As a green witch, Lucy has always felt strongest and the most at home in the forest, surrounded by nature. But when a disturbing dream wakes her and sends her fleeing into the woods, she isn’t prepared for what she finds. She expected her element. Perhaps a message from spirit. She didn’t expect to cross paths with a sexy-as-sin man, straight out of a movie scene.

Jonas Morley isn’t like the other residents of Hallows End. He knows the town’s secrets, as well as Salem’s, and it has been his honor and duty to protect them for as long as he can remember. But the gorgeous witch who graces the town’s hidden border shakes him and makes him second-guess his directive. She calls to him like no other. But can he save his home and those under his care and still make her his? Or will their union mean danger and destruction for not only them but also those who live within the town’s borders?

Curses don’t discriminate, and the curse of the blood moon is the most determined and dangerous of all.

Hallows End is the first book in the Curse of the Blood Moon Series.

Aarya: Between this and Molly Harper’s audible original Witches Get Stuff Done, I have enough witch content to get in the Halloween spirit.

  • Just Like Magic

Just Like Magic by Sarah Hogle

    Author: Sarah Hogle
    Released: October 4, 2022 by G.P. Putnam's Sons
    Genre: ,

From the author of Twice Shy comes a sprightly Christmas novel, a rollicking romp through the absurdity of family holidays and the hope of new love.

Bettie Hughes once knew the comfort of luxury, flaunting a ridiculous collection of designer shoes and a stealthy addiction to CBD oils. That is, until her parents snipped her purse strings. Long obsessed with her public image, Bettie boasts an extravagant lifestyle on social media. But the reality is: Bettie is broke and squatting in Colorado, and her family has no idea.

Christmas, with its pressure to meet familial expectations, is looming when a drunk Bettie plays a vinyl record of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” backwards and accidentally conjures Hall, an unexpectedly charming Holiday Spirit in the form of a man. Once the shock wears off, Bettie knows she’s stumbled upon the greatest gift: a chance to make all her holiday wishes come true, plus a ready-made fiancé.

But as the wiles of magic lose their charm, Bettie finds herself set off-kilter by Hall’s sweet gestures. Suddenly, Bettie is finding her heart merry and light. But the happier she gets, the shorter Hall’s time on earth grows. Can Bettie channel the Christmas spirit and learn to live with goodwill toward all men? Or will her selfish ways come back as soon as the holidays are over?

Aarya: Really enjoyed Hogle’s first two books, but I might wait for December to get in the proper mood for this.

Rumors begin to spread of a species of hyperintelligent, dangerous octopus that may have developed its own language and culture. Marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen, who has spent her life researching cephalopod intelligence, will do anything for the chance to study them.

  • Station Eternity

    Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty

    Author: Mur Lafferty
Released: October 4, 2022 by Ace
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Midsolar Murders #1

From idyllic small towns to claustrophobic urban landscapes, Mallory Viridian is constantly embroiled in murder cases that only she has the insight to solve. But outside of a classic mystery novel, being surrounded by death doesn’t make you a charming amateur detective, it makes you a suspect and a social pariah. So when Mallory gets the opportunity to take refuge on a sentient space station, she thinks she has the solution. Surely the murders will stop if her only company is alien beings. At first her new existence is peacefully quiet…and markedly devoid of homicide.

But when the station agrees to allow additional human guests, Mallory knows the break from her peculiar reality is over. After the first Earth shuttle arrives, and aliens and humans alike begin to die, the station is thrown into peril. Stuck smack-dab in the middle of an extraterrestrial whodunit, and wondering how in the world this keeps happening to her anyway, Mallory has to solve the crime—and fast—or the list of victims could grow to include everyone on board…

Amanda: I’ve been on a murder mystery kick lately and I love seeing this mix in other genres like fantasy and sci-fi.

Sarah: I’m so, so excited to read this, and not just because of the absolute charming cleverness of “Midsolar Murders.”

  • Such Sharp Teeth

Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison

    Author: Rachel Harrison
Released: October 4, 2022 by Berkley
    Genre:

A young woman in need of a transformation finds herself in touch with the animal inside in this gripping, incisive novel from the author of Cackle and The Return.

Rory Morris isn’t thrilled to be moving back to her hometown, even if it is temporary. There are bad memories there. But her twin sister, Scarlett, is pregnant, estranged from the baby’s father, and needs support, so Rory returns to the place she thought she’d put in her rearview. After a night out at a bar where she runs into an old almost-flame, she hits a large animal with her car. And when she gets out to investigate, she’s attacked.

Rory survives, miraculously, but life begins to look and feel different. She’s unnaturally strong, with an aversion to silver—and suddenly the moon has her in its thrall. She’s changing into someone else—something else, maybe even a monster. But does that mean she’s putting those close to her in danger? Or is embracing the wildness inside of her the key to acceptance?

This darkly comedic love story is a brilliantly layered portrait of trauma, rage, and vulnerability.

Amanda: I think Rachel Harrison is doing such fun things with fantasy and horror.

  • The Belle of Belgrave Square

    Genre: ,
    Series: Belles of London #2

A London heiress rides out to the wilds of the English countryside to honor a marriage of convenience with a mysterious and reclusive stranger.

Tall, dark, and dour, the notorious Captain Jasper Blunt was once hailed a military hero, but tales abound of his bastard children and his haunted estate in Yorkshire. What he requires now is a rich wife to ornament his isolated ruin, and he has his sights set on the enchanting Julia Wychwood.

For Julia, an incurable romantic cursed with a crippling social anxiety, navigating a London ballroom is absolute torture. The only time Julia feels any degree of confidence is when she’s on her horse. Unfortunately, a young lady can’t spend the whole of her life in the saddle, so Julia makes an impetuous decision to take her future by the reins—she proposes to Captain Blunt.

In exchange for her dowry and her hand, Jasper must promise to grant her freedom to do as she pleases. To ride—and to read—as much as she likes without masculine interference. He readily agrees to her conditions, with one provision of his own: Julia is forbidden from going into the tower rooms of his estate and snooping around his affairs. • Butt-dialing the Billionaire

Butt-dialing the Billionaire by Annika Martin

    Author: Annika Martin
    Released: October 11, 2022
    Genre: ,
    Series: Billionaires of Manhattan #7

It was just some silly fun. A goofy imitation of the faceless mega-billionaire who owns our faceless international mega-corporation.

And yes, there was laughter. Possibly a few hoots and screams.

How was I to know that Dave from accounting had sat on the speakerphone, butt-dialing said mega-billionaire? Or that he’d listen to me make fun of him for ten straight minutes.

    Ummm…he could’ve announced himself!

They say he’s a notorious rake. A paparazzi-punching scoundrel. An international jet-set bad boy.

And now I hear he’s determined to track down the jokester. Me.

    Eep!

But we’re tight like family in this office—no way will my co-workers rat me out, in spite of the pressure from the top. Plus, who brings the cookies? Moi!

Things die down after a few months, and I’m pretty sure I’m safe.

Thank goodness, because I have my hands full with our lazy, arrogant new office gopher. He has the worst work ethic I’ve ever seen—how did he even get hired? He doesn’t know how to work a vending machine, and he’s baffled when we send around a card to be signed for somebody’s birthday. It’s as if he’s never set foot in a place of business in his life.

But little by little, we’re drawing closer. He’s funny. Sexy. Wicked. Still, he’s all wrong for me. I like respectable men with a work ethic.

Also, I can’t shake the feeling that he’s hiding something…

Aarya: The most recent installment wasn’t my cup of tea, but I reread a couple books via audio in September and they’re as fun as I remembered (The Billionaire’s Wake-up-call Girl is my favorite).

    Hard Pressed by Aurora Rey

    Author: Aurora Rey
Released: October 11, 2022 by Bold Strokes Books
    Genre: , ,

For Mira Lavigne, cider is about tradition, elegance, and class. She has little respect and even less patience for self-anointed mavericks who think their ticket to fame and fortune is throwing the rulebook out the window. Dylan Miller is one of those people. The only thing she loves more than pushing the envelope is finding ways to make cider, perry, and a few things she hasn’t even named yet more delicious and more accessible to everyone.

When Mira and Dylan are tapped to co-chair Finger Lakes Cider Week, neither can pass up the publicity and prestige of the role. But professional compromises raise personal stakes, and Dylan and Mira are hard-pressed to keep their businesses—and their hearts—out of harm’s way.

Tara: I don’t think I’ve read a romance with a cider maker before and now I want to!

  • Mistakes Were Made

Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner

    Author: Meryl Wilsner
Released: October 11, 2022 by St. Martin's Griffin
    Genre: , ,

From the critically acclaimed author of Something to Talk About comes Meryl Wilsner’s Mistakes Were Made, a sharp and sexy rom-com about a college senior who accidentally hooks up with her best friend’s mom.

When Cassie Klein goes to an off-campus bar to escape her school’s Family Weekend, she isn’t looking for a hookup—it just happens. Buying a drink for a stranger turns into what should be an uncomplicated, amazing one-night stand. But then the next morning rolls around and her friend drags her along to meet her mom—the hot, older woman Cassie slept with.

Erin Bennett came to Family Weekend to get closer to her daughter, not have a one-night stand with a college senior. In her defense, she hadn’t known Cassie was a student when they’d met. To make things worse, Erin’s daughter brings Cassie to breakfast the next morning. And despite Erin’s better judgement—how could sleeping with your daughter’s friend be anything but bad?—she and Cassie get along in the day just as well as they did last night.

What should have been a one-time fling quickly proves impossible to ignore, and soon Cassie and Erin are sneaking around. Worst of all, they start to realize they have something real. But is being honest about the love between them worth the cost?

Tara: I love age gap romances and cannot wait to see how this one plays out.

I already had the Mimi Matthews on my list, but adding THE SPARE MAN and, I think, the Eve Dangerfield. I might need to wait for the description of “just how dark is this…?” before committing on the Dangerfield.

That said, I’m guessing it’s on someone’s list— @DiscoDollyDeb?—and so I’ll just wait for the late-October WAYR post. 🙂

I am HERE for Midsolar Murders. I haven’t been crazy about Kowel, but I’ll give The Spare Man a try.

One Woman’s War by Christine Wells: “From the author of Sisters of the Resistance comes the story of WWII British Naval Intelligence officer Victoire Bennett, the real-life inspiration for the James Bond character Miss Moneypenny, whose international covert operation is put in jeopardy when a volatile socialite and Austrian double agent threatens to expose the mission to German High Command.”

Saturnalia by Stephanie Feldman: “The Saturnalia carnival marks three years since Nina walked away from Philadelphia’s elite Saturn Club—with its genteel debauchery, arcane pecking order, and winking interest in alchemy and the occult….But when she gets a chance call from Max, one of the Saturn Club’s best-connected members and her last remaining friend, the favor he asks will plunge her back into the Club’s wild solstice masquerade, on a mysterious errand she cannot say no to.”

The Socialite’s Guide to Murder by S. K. Golden: “It’s 1958 and Evelyn Elizabeth Grace Murphy has not left the Pinnacle Hotel in fourteen months. But just as Evelyn sets out to prove Henry’s innocence, she finds Billie Bell dead.”

Yes to the Mimi Matthews and Annika Martin. I like the look of the MOUNTAIN IN THE SEA as well. Also Looking forward to Sarina Bowen’s A LITTLE TOO LATE. She’s always reliable for a good story.

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Tara: I’m not sure if you read M/F romances, but Sarina Bowen’s BITTERSWEET (the first book in her long-running True North series) features a cider-making hero. Iirc (it’s been a while), there’s a lot of detail about the cider-making process.

@FashionablyEvil: You are right, indeed, my dear: I have VELVET CRUELTY on my October TBR (see below). I’m expecting it to be very hot and very dark–it’s part of the multi-author Midnight Dynasty series about two big, wealthy families who love and hate each other in equal measure. VELVET CRUELTY features an abduction and (apparently) a poly-am situation between the heroine and her four captors.

  6. Escapeologist says:

I liked the first two chapters of THE SPARE MAN when they were posted on tor.com. Good worldbuilding, likeable characters and a cute dog.

  7. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I was happily surprised to see a couple of the books from my October TBR included in today’s post. As of now, here is what I have lined up for October:

OUT OF LOVE by Ruth Cardello (October 4): The second book in Cardello’s The Switch duet about twin brothers (separated at birth) who reunite and, briefly, switch places. The hero here is a farmer pretending to be a businessman and falling in love with the daughter of one of his brother’s most important clients.

COWBOY, KISS ME AT CHRISTMAS by Genevieve Turner (October 6): You only have to say, “Enforced proximity in a snowstorm with only one bed,” and I am so there! However, I do have to question why the 5th book of Turner’s Cowboy Homecoming series is going to be released before the 4th book (COWBOY, LOVE ME FOREVER due on October 22).

BUTT-DIALING THE BILLIONAIRE by Annika Martin (October 11): Martin’s Billionaires of Manhattan series continues with the story of a butt dial that results in a billionaire hearing the less than complimentary things the heroine says about him.

VELVET CRUELTY by Eve Dangerfield (October 11): Part of the multi-author Midnight Dynasty series of dark romances, this book is a poly-am/why choose? story between the heroine and the four different men who kidnap her. This is Dangerfield’s first Midnight Dynasty book, and I expect it to be very, very hot and very, very dark.

EXTORTION by Amelia Wilde (October 18): The second book in Wilde’s Controlling Interest series about a young woman who attempted to embezzle money from her boss and her boss’s suggestion that she “repay” him in a way that does not involve him going to the authorities.

KING OF WRATH by Ana Huang (October 18): Billed as a “steamy billionaire romance”, I can’t find much else about the book, but I enjoyed Huang’s previous Twisted series, so I’ll give this one a try.

COWBOY, HOLD ME FOREVER by Genevieve Turner (October 22): As noted above, this is the fourth book in Turner’s Cowboy Homecoming series. It’s the story of two hurt & lonely people teaming up to rescue an abandoned horse…and growing closer in the process.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, COWBOY by Maisey Yates (October 25): The latest in Yates’s Four Corners Ranch series, this one features an unplanned pregnancy.

BRUTAL PLAY by Alison Rhymes (October 25): Rhymes’s debut romance, BROKEN PLAY, a sensitive exploration of marital infidelity, made my Best of 2022 list. I’m curious about her follow-up which features two people who were secondary characters in the earlier book, including the heroine who was “the other woman” in the first book. I’ll be interested to see if Rhymes can make her a sympathetic character here.

NOVEMBER by Sybil Bartel (October 29): The next in Bartel’s Alpha Elite romantic-suspense series. This one features a hacker hero. I fully expect the publication date of this book to be postponed because Bartel’s most recent book, ZULU, was only released a few weeks ago after multiple postponements.

UNTAKEN TWIN by Samantha Christy (October 30): I’ve never read any Christy before, but I saw this book’s blurb somewhere and my catnip button was pushed. I love the man-pining-for-late-brother’s/friend’s-widow trope and this one fits the bill: a woman loses her fiancé and leaves town. When she returns, she’s regularly confronted with her fiancé’s face—in the face of his twin brother.

  8. Vasha says:

Although Mur Lafferty’s “Six Wakes” proved disappointing, I absolutely can’t resist the premise of “Midolar Murders.”

  9. Bea says:

I’ve devoured every other Mimi Mathews books, but I can’t get into this series. Dunno why. I just can’t settle into the characters and be in the story.

The books I’ve inhaled instead are Chloe O’Neill’s Kit Brightling series. Napoleonic wars, except Princess Charlotte didn’t die in childbirth, female Navy captains, magic powers, multi-racial crews, found families, romance involving simmering longing, daring rescues, foundling with a mysterious heritage, etc.

  10. Elizabeth says:

Amanda Bouchet! Kelley Armstrong! Mimi Matthews! I only purchase a few authors and these are among my favorites. And Station Eternity looks awesome!
    Huzzah!

  11. denise says:

Looking forward to the Jenny Holiday book, So This Is Christmas, because I love the series.

  12. JoanneBB says:

I preordered the audiobook of The Spare Man because I like her narrations. I might get the Station Eternity as well, I think I’ll read a sample first though.

  13. Lisa F says:

A Curse of Queens is pretty good, and The Belle of Bellegrave Square is one of the best books of the year. everything else is on my TBR!

  14. KitBee says:

Thanks for the space mystery recs! I think this is a genre I need in my life. I’m also super excited for THE BELLE OF BELGRAVE SQUARE!

  15. Tam says:

The third in Naomi Novak’s Scholomance trilogy came out this month, and finished all the plot strands off nicely. I’m not sure if it was the strongest part of the trilogy (mainly due to the sidelining of my favourite characters), but over all, she stuck the landing, and I will re-read it. I think the second is still my favourite, romance-wise. The hero reminded me of one of T. Kingfisher’s tortured paladin knights.
