If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.
Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.
We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.
As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth.

How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?

Go Hex Yourself
Author: Jessica Clare
Released: April 19, 2022 by Berkley
Genre: Paranormal, RomanceIt’s one hex of an attraction in this romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Jessica Clare.
When Reggie Johnson answers a job ad in the paper, she’s astonished to find that she’s not applying to work at her favorite card game, Spellcraft: The Magicking. Instead, she’s applying to be an actual familiar for an actual witch. As in, real magic.
The new job has a few perks – great room and board, excellent pay, and she’s apprenticing to a powerful witch. Sure, the witch is a bit eccentric. And sure, there was that issue with the black cat Reggie would prefer to forget about. The biggest problem, however, is warlock Ben Magnus, her employer’s nephew and the most arrogant, insufferable, maddening man to ever cast a spell.
Reggie absolutely hates him. He’s handsome, but he’s also bossy and irritating and orders her around. Ben’s butt might look great in a crystal ball vision, but that’s as far as it goes. But when someone with a vendetta targets the household, she finds herself working with Ben to break a deadly curse. Apparently, when they’re not fighting like cats and dogs, things get downright…bewitching.

Book Boyfriend
Author: Kris Ripper
Released: April 26, 2022 by Carina Adores
Genre: Contemporary Romance, LGBTQIA, RomanceA secret crush leads to not-so-secret romance in this delightful romantic comedy from Kris Ripper
There are three things you need to know about Preston “PK” Kingsley:
1) He’s a writer, toiling in obscurity as an editorial assistant at a New York City publishing house.
2) He is not a cliché. No, really.
3) He’s been secretly in love with his best friend, Art, since they once drunkenly kissed in college. When Art moves in with PK following a bad breakup, PK hopes this will be the moment when Art finally sees him as more than a friend. But Art seems to laugh off the very idea of them in a relationship, so PK returns to his writing roots—in fiction, he can say all the things he can’t say out loud.
In his book, PK can be the perfect boyfriend.
Before long, it seems like the whole world has a crush on the fictionalized version of him, including Art, who has no idea that the hot new book everyone’s talking about is PK’s story. But when his brilliant plan to win Art over backfires, PK might lose not just his fantasy book boyfriend, but his best friend.
Aarya: Deception isn’t my favorite, but the romance meta aspects sound cute.

Ilya is sick of secrets. Shane has gotten so good at hiding his feelings, sometimes Ilya questions if they even exist. The closeness, the intimacy, even the risk that would come with being open about their relationship…Ilya wants it all.
It’s time for them to decide what’s most important—hockey or love.
It’s time to make a call.
Aarya: I didn’t expect Shane and Ilya to get another book, so I’m curious how the author tackles the “after the HFN” conflict.

Nettle & Bone
Author: T. Kingfisher
Released: April 26, 2022 by Tor Books
Genre: Science Fiction/FantasyWith her signature mix of the grim and the delightful, award-winning author T. Kingfisher takes the old bones of fantasy and fairytale and makes them into something entirely new in this enchanting adventure.
After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra—the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter—has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.
Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince—if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning.
On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra’s family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.
“Nettle & Bone is the kind of book that immediately feels like an old friend. Fairytale mythic resonance meets homey pragmatism in this utterly delightful story. It’s creepy, funny, heartfelt, and full of fantastic characters I absolutely loved!” —Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage
Aarya: For the legion of Kingfisher fans out there!

I hadn’t realized how rare “coming soon” status is in Overdrive. I have six library accounts, and not one of them has any of the 5 books I want from this list available for a pre-release hold. (I could recommend a purchase and be slotted into the holds when it’s acquired, but I prefer to reserve my recommendations for past releases the libraries haven’t acquired.) Positive focus: five books to look forward to when they show up in the catalog(s)!
Very much looking forward to THE HEIR APPARENT’S REJECTED MATE by Cate C. Wells in one week, despite learning that the protagonists are in a YA/NA age range.
I am hoping someone will review “Nettle & Bone” because while the synopsis intrigues me it also sounds like it could be darker and more gruesome than the Paladin books. I’m always here for a roadtrip through a fantasy world but the suicide mission aspect reminds me too much of the Clocktaur War duology, specifically “The Wonder Engine” which I didn’t enjoy at all.
Tragedy – the library where I have an account has split off from its former library co-op and all my holds are gone. I remember there was a good discussion here a few years ago about libraries you can join online/from a distance. Can any one recommend any? I live in an extremely rural area – the closest city library is two hours away.
I can barely wait for The Long Game – like many others!!! My suspicion is still that that terrible flight from Role Model might serve as a catalyst for Shane and Ilya to come out/do more/something like that… there’s just a glimpse of Ilya typing madly into his phone in that book.
Book Boyfriend sounds cute as well, so I’ve pre-ordered that too.
Just saw that Forever, Con Amor by A.M. Johnson, book four in her For Him series comes out on April 28, so another pre-order that I need! This is a lovely series and this sounds like it will tie up loose ends, with two characters from previous books getting together – Marcos and Chance. You couldn’t find more opposites than these two, so it’s going to be interesting!
I have a business trip with lots of looooong flights coming up in early May, so the challenge will be to not dive right in but actually save these new books for a few days, because I am bad at sleeping on planes, but I love having the time to do nothing but read on long flights. Because, no e-mail, no distractions, not having to do anything…
Counting down to THE LONG GAME and THE HEIR-APPARENT’S REJECTED MATE, although like @Deborah I’m not thrilled about the NA angle. Of course, I’m of an age where people in their forties seem NA to me, so perhaps I’ll simoly adjust the MCs’ ages up in my head as I read. Meanwhile, airbrushed tattoos an’ all, the TANKED cover is going into my HOT AF COVERS folder (which I have helpfully labeled “Interesting Books” on my laptop, lol).
@stacey the Brooklyn Public Library has an online card that is 40-50 bucks a year. I love it and it has seriously saved me so much money over the past 6 months. The waits can be long, but if you have a huge tbr you can usually find books 3+ months old that are ‘available now’
I saw Go Hex Yourself described as a Reylo romance and immediately put it on hold at the library. #1 in line so I’m hoping they get it out on release day.
@Stacey-I second @Jaime’s recommendation for the Brooklyn Public Library. What I love is that they often have numerous copies of online books, unlike my hometown library that usually only has a couple. BPL was the first out of state library I joined, best money I ever spent!
That success encouraged me to join another, the Orange County Library in Florida. It’s more expensive, I want to say maybe $125? Still worth every penny for me, because between the three libraries I belong to-I can usually get the book I want fairly quickly.
I love that libraries offer this service!
@Jaime & @Maureen somehow I had no idea this was a thing! I feel like my local library system sometimes is overwhelmed & it takes forever to get a book (often by the time something new is available it’s gone on sale & I’ve bought it). Thanks for the heads up!
@Stacey, I just learned that we have a state library system, with a big catalog of ebooks. It’s a major relief to me, as I’m soon moving to a rural area without a county library system. So check to see if your state has one, before paying for access elsewhere!
@DiscoDollyDeb Even though I don’t read much NA romance, I do that often, adjusting the MC’s ages up in my head… often I’ll find they seem older than they are anyway, so if the blurb sounds good, I try not to let their ages hold me back too much.
I share @SBAarya’s opinion, BLACK SUN was not only my favorite fantasy read in 2020, it was one of the best fantasies I’ve ever read. I am tappy feet and grabby hands excited for FEVERED STAR next week. Roanhorse has put in her time with the world building, and it shows. If you’re interested in non-Eurocentric fantasy I recommend these books highly.
Also looking forward to DROP DEAD GORGEOUS by Rachel Gibson. She was my first hockey romance and go to for me a while back but somehow fell off my map, so when this popped up in my GoodReads new releases, I decided to try jumping back on the train.
Also, my bank sent me a $5 Amazon gift card for using my debit card so, THE HEIR APPARENT’S REJECTED MATE, you shall be mine. Although, like Triple D, I will be aging them in my head.
Oh, and there’s a new GOOD EATS cookbook out at the end of the month. The books are just as much fun as the show. I’m looking forward to trying his new take on steak. I don’t know why you’d mess with perfection, but I’m always up for a good steak.
All the Duke I Need by Caroline Linden is out on the 26th.
@Erin: “often I’ll find they seem older than they are anyway.” Agreed. I’ve read two books recently, both with MCs in their mid-to-late twenties, with heroines who are completed obsessed with Fleetwood Mac and, specifically, the “Rumours” album. I read those with a rather large pinch of salt because that seemed like a choice a much older character would make. I’m not saying that MCs my kids’ ages don’t know or like Fleetwood Mac, but there are so many more likely acts/albums they would know by heart and be obsessed with.
Thank you everyone who had online library card recommendations! I’m signing up for Brooklyn now. I live in rural Maine, and there is a state library but I want a backup plan 🙂
Charleston lawyer, here. Reading that description for “Partner Track” really made me cringe. I don’t think I would be able to suspend my disbelief regarding the premise to actually read this, but glad to see my demographic being represented!
@DiscoDollyDeb Hey I’m 27 and the Rumors album is permanently in my car and my own mother has told me I play it too much on road trips…so maybe I’m destined to be a romance novel heroine 🙂
Not just Brooklyn but the New York Public Library has a service for those who don’t live in the City, although you need to be somewhere in NY State when you sign up.
https://www.nypl.org
However, until the end of May anyone anywhere in the US can borrow one of four books that have appeared on various banned book lists:
Speak | Laurie Halse Anderson
King and the Dragonflies | Kacen Callender
Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You | Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi
The Catcher in the Rye | J.D. Salinger
Historical aside: Even though Brooklyn became a borough of New York City in 1898, it maintains a separate library system (as does Queens) from when it was an independent incorporated city.
Birds of California was a really nice book; I think I ranked it around a high B or low-level A.
Go Hex Yourself, Part of Your World, Book Boyfriend, Tanked, Partner Track, The Long Game, Nettle and Bone are all on my TBR pile.
The Brooklyn Public Library also just launched a program called Books Unbanned that gives a free library card anyone in the US who is 13-21 yrs old. That way they can access e-books that might be pulled from their local libraries…so a really good place to support!
@Stacey This can also depend on your state. For example I live in Texas where I belong to 3 libraries for free (including the big Houston one) just because I have a Texas drivers license. Research similar libraries in your state for the same free access. The two other cards are for consortium’s that have a 10 or 12 city group to share the costs. There are also libraries that will let you join for a fee of course but I have found that these 3 alone as well as my local pretty much cover all my ebook needs without paying any extra.
@ Erin, @DDD, I too age the really young protagonists to better match my own age. Conversely I recently read a Lily Morton book about older heroes in which the 48 year old can tell the weather by his bum knee – I recall 48 as being fairly young, and suspect Lily Morton is in her late 20s.
If you work in a city but don’t live there, you can often get library cards from the city’s library. I live in the Philly burbs but b/c my office is in Philly proper, I can access the Philadelphia Public Library for free. Just an FYI.
