  • The Wolf and the Woodsman

The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid

The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid is $1.99! This fantasy debut was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick for me and I was definitely curious about the Hungarian history. The description also made me think there might be a romance. Have any of you read it?

In the vein of Naomi Novik’s New York Times bestseller Spinning Silver and Katherine Arden’s national bestseller The Bear and the Nightingale, this unforgettable debut— inspired by Hungarian history and Jewish mythology—follows a young pagan woman with hidden powers and a one-eyed captain of the Woodsmen as they form an unlikely alliance to thwart a tyrant.

In her forest-veiled pagan village, Évike is the only woman without power, making her an outcast clearly abandoned by the gods. The villagers blame her corrupted bloodline—her father was a Yehuli man, one of the much-loathed servants of the fanatical king. When soldiers arrive from the Holy Order of Woodsmen to claim a pagan girl for the king’s blood sacrifice, Évike is betrayed by her fellow villagers and surrendered.

But when monsters attack the Woodsmen and their captive en route, slaughtering everyone but Évike and the cold, one-eyed captain, they have no choice but to rely on each other. Except he’s no ordinary Woodsman—he’s the disgraced prince, Gáspár Bárány, whose father needs pagan magic to consolidate his power. Gáspár fears that his cruelly zealous brother plans to seize the throne and instigate a violent reign that would damn the pagans and the Yehuli alike. As the son of a reviled foreign queen, Gáspár understands what it’s like to be an outcast, and he and Évike make a tenuous pact to stop his brother.

As their mission takes them from the bitter northern tundra to the smog-choked capital, their mutual loathing slowly turns to affection, bound by a shared history of alienation and oppression. However, trust can easily turn to betrayal, and as Évike reconnects with her estranged father and discovers her own hidden magic, she and Gáspár need to decide whose side they’re on, and what they’re willing to give up for a nation that never cared for them at all.

  • When You Love a Scotsman

When You Love a Scotsman by Hannah Howell

When You Love a Scotsman by Hannah Howell is $1.99! This is book two in the Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen series with a road trip element. I haven’t read this series, but I’m completely curious about the American historical setting and Scottish heroes. Have you read any of these?

New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell sweeps readers away with the passion-filled adventures of the MacEnroy brothers, seven daring Scotsmen who take on America in her most turbulent days—and capture the hearts of the ladies each is destined to wed . . .

With danger closing in from all sides, Abigail Jenson works tirelessly to protect her small Missouri farm. She doesn’t require saving—but a handsome officer appears on horseback just as ruthless marauders set her cabin ablaze. With nowhere else to turn, Abigail allows the soldier with the seductive Highlander’s gaze to escort her to shelter in a nearby town.

Matthew MacEnroy was reluctant to join his adopted nation’s conflict—until an enemy attack wounded two of his brothers. Bravely doing battle has its price when a proud, independent beauty comes under his watch—no military man can risk the powerful emotions their attraction has unleashed. But when Matthew himself is caught in the crossfire, Abigail leads their long journey home to MacEnroy valley . . . and her caring touch sparks the promise of a bold future together

  • The Smoke Thief

The Smoke Thief by Shana Abe

The Smoke Thief by Shana Abe is $3.99! This is the first book in Abe’s Drakon historical paranormal romance series. I really enjoyed this book and the world Abe created with dragons. The hero is definitely an Alpha hero and can be a jackass at times, which some readers found off-putting. But I went on to read the rest of the Drakon series.

For centuries they’ve lived in secret among northern England’s green and misted hills. Creatures of extraordinary beauty, power, and sensuality, they possess the ability to shape-shift from human to dragon and back again. Now their secret–and their survival–is threatened by a temptation that will break every boundary….

Dubbed the Smoke Thief, a daring jewel thief is confounding the London police. His wealthy victims claim the master burglar can walk through walls and vanish into thin air. But Christoff, the charismatic Marquess of Langford, knows the truth: the thief is no ordinary human but a “runner” who’s fled Darkfrith without permission. As Alpha leader of the drakon, it’s Kit’s duty to capture the fugitive before the secrets of the tribe are revealed to mortals. But not even Kit suspects that the Smoke Thief could be a woman.

Clarissa Rue Hawthorne knew her dangerous exploits would attract the attention of the drakon. But she didn’t expect Christoff himself to come to London, dangling the tribe’s most valuable jewel–the Langford Diamond–as bait. For as long as she could remember, Rue had lived the life of a halfling–half drakon, half mortal–and an outcast in both worlds. She’d always loved the handsome and willful Kit from the only place it was safe: from afar. But now she was no longer the shy, timid girl she’d once been. She was the first woman capable of making the Turn in four generations. So why did she still feel the same dizzying sense of vulnerability whenever he was near?

From the moment he saw her, Kit knew that the alluring and powerful beauty was every bit his Alpha equal and destined to be his bride. And by the harsh laws of the drakon, Rue knew that she was the property of the marquess. But they will risk banishment and worse for a chance at something greater. For now Rue is his prisoner, the diamond has disappeared, and she’s made the kind of dangerous proposition a man like Kit cannot resist….

In this bewitching novel, Shana Abé transports us into a world of exhilarating romance and magic.

  • Get a Clue

Get a Clue by Jill Shalvis

Get a Clue by Jill Shalvis is $1.99! This is a standalone contemporary romance with a hint of mystery. Readers say this isn’t her strongest romance, but both Sarah and Elyse have recommended Shalvis’s books for cozy, low angst romances to read.

When Breanne Mooreland gets left at the altar, she decides the best thing to do is to go on her honeymoon alone. Of course, she loses her luggage along the way and ends up snowed in at a Sierra mountains lodge run by a noticeably quirky staff. And before she can order room service, she finds a naked—and gorgeous—man taking a shower in her suite who refuses to leave . . .

Vice cop Cooper Scott is in serious need of a vacation. He’s not about to give up the only available room to a stranger because of a mix-up. They’ll just have to make the best of it by sharing the bed. They’re mature adults after all. But when Cooper wakes up kissing the long, leggy Breanne, he wants to show her exactly what the honeymoon suite is intended for. That will have to wait, though, because a screaming Breanne has just stumbled over one very dead body . . .

  1. Kris says:

I’ve got the wolf and the woodsman on hold at the library. You had me at “ the cold, one-eyed captain”.

    Can’t wait.

  2. After Dark with the Duke by Julie Anne Long is $1.99. Lara found it squee-worthy here:

  3. Carrie G says:

PSALM FOR THE WILD-BUILT by Becky Chambers is $2.99 at Amazon. This is a wonderful longish novella. I bought the audio at an Audible sale and my husband and I loved it so much I bought it in print so we could reread it and take our time.

  4. Tam says:

THE WOLF AND THE WOODSMAN was a disappointment to me. It had a very YA-feel, but with an adult protagonist who might’ve worked better as an eighteen year old. It also could have used a good editor; I found parts of it dragged for me.

  5. Darlynne says:

@CarrieG: Same here. I still think about this book, sort of like looking back at a safe and comforting place. Cannot wait for the second book.

  6. Jazzlet says:

I am worried the pup on the cover of the Jill Shalvis is going to get hot hot chocolate all over itself, which just no 🙁

  7. Taylor says:

I find the sharing a bed with a stranger who “wakes up kissing” to be creepy as hell.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Taylor: not to mention, being naked in the shower and “refusing to leave.”

  9. LisaM says:

My library only has paper copies of the Drakon series, but I’m happy to wait for one because sometimes my brain won’t focus on screen reading.

    I second @Taylor and @DDD’s comments.

  10. Lace says:

Seconding Tam on The Wolf and the Woodsman, unfortunately. Tons of worldbuilding, but plotting/pacing issues.

  11. Taylor says:

@DDD, yep! There are ways to write all sorts of things, but in the fluffy romance, NEWP.
