Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Bakery Owner with Suspenseful Past

This HaBO comes from Michelle. Content warning for the description below:

Its a contemporary romance I read around like 2007 or so, and it was pretty recent.

A woman is at this fancy government party in a foreign country, I think. I don’t remember what her job was. She has to go to the bathroom. She’s at the sink washing her hands, and all of a sudden a group of terrorists with big guns come storming into the building to hold all the people hostage. She ends up getting shot, I’m pretty sure.

Cut to her like 5 years later or something, she’s moved back to her hometown and has opened up a bakery. It turns out that she had been pregnant when she was shot and she had a miscarriage. She ends up falling in love with a local guy, and in the end everybody lives happily ever after.

This sounds kind of bonkers.

This kinda reminds me of Bel Canto on some level, though that’s not exactly a romance.

  2. HeatherT says:

I also thought of Bel Canto, but clearly not the same book, since opera is so key to that book. Also, not a romance.

  3. Kate says:

“The Ugly Duckling”, by Iris Johansson.

I would swear there’s a Laura Griffin short story/novella with the same beginning premise. But I can’t find it on her website. Might be Night Heat in the Love is Murder anthology. But don’t have it downloaded to my nook, so can’t confirm. Definitely has the terrorists attacking an embassy party, but no pregnancy or bakery. Maybe a couple of stories in the anthology got conflated?

  5. Kerri says:

It sounds like it could almost be the Nora Roberts book Angels Fall. She was working at a fancy restaurant and it was the site of a mass shooting where she was the only surviver. She ends up drifting around, finally lands in a small town and becomes the cook at the town’s diner. I don’t remember her being pregnant in the book. It came out in 2006.
