  • The Perks of Loving a Wallflower

The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley

The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley is $2.99! This is book two in The Wynchesters historical romance series. This one has been mentioned a couple times on the site, including a Hide Your Wallet post and Get Rec’d with Amanda.

Fans of Bridgerton will love this Regency romp in which a proper Society miss recruits a very improper lady grifter in a quest for vengeance, only to find love instead.

As a master of disguise, Thomasina Wynchester can be a polite young lady—or a bawdy old man. Anything to solve the case. Her latest assignment unveils a top-secret military cipher covering up an enigma that goes back centuries. But when Tommy’s beautiful new client turns out to be the highborn lady she’s secretly smitten with, more than her mission is at stake . . .

Bluestocking Miss Philippa York doesn’t believe in love. Her cold heart didn’t pitter-patter when she was betrothed to a duke, nor did it break when he married someone else. All Philippa desires is to rescue her priceless manuscript and decode its clues to unmask a villain. She hates that she needs a man’s help—so she’s delighted to discover the clever, charming baron at her side is in fact a woman. Her cold heart . . . did it just pitter-patter?

  • Handle with Care

Handle with Care by Helena Hunting

Handle with Care by Helena Hunting is $2.99! This is part of the Shacking Up series and features the hero getting a makeover. Apparently, we’ve mentioned this previously on the site because it was in our book finder listings, but I have no memory of it. Oh well!

    HE WANTS TO LOSE CONTROL.

Between his parents’ messed up marriage and his narcissistic younger brother, Lincoln Moorehead has spent the majority of his life avoiding his family. After the death of his father, Lincoln finds himself in the middle of the drama. To top it all off, he’s been named CEO of Moorehead Media, much to his brother’s chagrin. But Lincoln’s bad attitude softens when he meets the no-nonsense, gorgeous woman who has been given the task of transforming him from the gruff, wilderness guy to a suave businessman

SHE’S TRYING TO HOLD IT TOGETHER.

Wren Sterling has been working double time to keep the indiscretions at Moorehead Media at bay, so when she’s presented with a new contract, with new responsibilities and additional incentives, she agrees. Working with the reclusive oldest son of a ridiculously entitled family is worth the hassle if it means she’s that much closer to pursuing her own dreams. What Wren doesn’t expect is to find herself attracted to him, or for it to be mutual. And she certainly doesn’t expect to fall for Lincoln. But when a shocking new Moorehead scandal comes to light, she’s forced to choose between her own family and the broody, cynical CEO.

  • First Love, Take Two

First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel

First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance where two exes become roommates. We featured this one on a previous edition of Cover Awe. Shana gave this a B-:

Readers who like to root for a couple who are up against a closed-minded community, and who sympathize with an anxious, and occasionally strident heroine, would enjoy First Love, Take Two. If you’re looking for a standalone romance, low angst, and a couple with stellar communications skills, this might not be for you. Either way, my fellow foodies will want platters of buttermilk biscuits and tacos at hand while you read.

On the verge of realizing her dream of being a doctor, Preeti Patel should be ecstatic. But between the stress of her residency, trying to find a job, and managing her traditional, no-boundaries family, Preeti’s anxiety is through the roof. Relationships and love aren’t even an option. Fortunately, Preeti’s finally found a new place to stay . . . only to discover that her new roommate is her ex.

Preeti never quite got over Daniel Thompson. Super-hot, plenty of swagger, amazing cook—the guy is practically perfect. And if it weren’t for their families, there might have been a happily ever after. But it’s hard to keep her sanity and libido in check when the man of her dreams is sleeping mere feet away. Can Preeti and Daniel find a way to stand up and fight for each other one last time . . . before they lose their second chance?

  • Cinderella is Dead

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron is $1.99! This is a queer YA fantasy novel inspired by Cinderella. Carrie wrote a Lightning Review for this one, but gave it a DNF (did not finish). Have you read this one?

It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all–and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew . . .

This fresh take on a classic story will make readers question the tales they’ve been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.

The sale made me look at GoodReads and I’m much more interested in reading The Perks of Loving a Wallflower after reading a few GR reviews about it and specifically reading how badly the marketing seems to have missed the mark here.

It sounds like it’s not an f/f historical romance between two conventionally pretty femme women. It’s a romance between a curvy bluestocking demisexual cis woman and a non-binary / agender person who prefers short hair and men’s clothing, written by a bi woman. (This is all based on reviews since I haven’t read it).

  2. Omphale says:

I’ve said it previously, but I really really dislike the cover for The Perks of Loving a Wallflower.

Basically, Tommy is genderqueer and prefers casually male attire, to the point where presenting as a young woman is so awkward for her that she cannot function as herself. So this cover is an erasure of a character in ways that are actually deeply misleading for the reader.

But the other issues I had were rooted in the idea that our other lead’s Young Woman’s Awakening of the Soul is in itself interesting and, well, it’s not for me. So I spent the first 65% of the book waiting for a plot to start, and then when it did, I grew more and more frustrated on Tommy’s behalf. Basically, I do not recommend for those well-versed in queer romance.

But, maybe it would be a good gateway for those who don’t know Olivia Waite exists?

@Omphale – Thank you. I was trying to talk myself into this one but yeah, no, I think I’ll pass. So you saved me $2.99!

  4. Omphale says:

@cleo if you are lucky enough to have access to a public library system that caters to a queer reading public*, you may find it worth checking out (I note that Alexis Hall enjoyed Philippa’s character far more than I did)

    * I have access to the DC library system and their e-collections are amazing – tons of comics, queer romance and even self-pubbed

  5. cleo says:

@Omphale – thanks for the reminder. I love my library system (the Chicago Public Library) and use it a lot but still don’t always remember to check it. They have a good queer collection and they do have both e and print versions of this. If I do read it, I’ll wait a bit- I just finished Alexis Hall’s new regency and I liked it so much I’m not really ready to read other queer regencies just yet.

I’ll also check out his review. I’m bi-romantic and demi-sexual and haven’t yet read a demi character that resonates with me. So maybe I will try it.
