  • Battle Royal

    Battle Royal by Lucy Parker

RECOMMENDED: Battle Royal by Lucy Parker is $1.99! This is part of today’s amazing set of Kindle Daily Deals, as are all of the books featured today. Catherine gave this one an A-:

I loved Battle Royal. While it did have minor flaws, it more than made up for them with humour, tenderness, and food porn.

Beloved author Lucy Parker pens a delicious new romantic comedy that is a battle of whisks and wits.

    Ready…

Four years ago, Sylvie Fairchild charmed the world as a contestant on the hit baking show, Operation Cake. Her ingenious, colorful creations captivated viewers and intrigued all but one of the judges, Dominic De Vere, the hottest pastry chef in London. When her glittery unicorn cake went spectacularly sideways, Dominic was quick to vote her off the show. Since then, Sylvie has managed to use her fame to help fulfill her dream of opening a bakery, Sugar Fair. The toast of Instagram, Sugar Fair has captured the attention of the Operation Cake producers…and a princess.

    Set…

Dominic is His Majesty the King’s favorite baker, the go-to for sweet-toothed A-List celebrities, and a veritable British institution. He’s brilliant, talented, hard-working. And an icy, starchy grouch. Learning that the irksome Sylvie will be joining him on the Operation Cake judging panel is enough to make the famously dour baker even more grim. Her fantastical baking is only slightly more troublesome than the fact that he can’t stop thinking about her pink-streaked hair and irrepressible dimple.

    Match…

When Dominic and Sylvie learn they will be fighting for the once in a lifetime opportunity to bake a cake for the upcoming wedding of Princess Rose, the flour begins to fly as they’re both determined to come out on top.

The bride adores Sylvie’s quirky style. The palace wants Dominic’s classic perfection.

In this royal battle, can there be room for two?

  • The Bear and the Nightingale

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

RECOMMENDEDThe Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is $2.99! This fantasy novel has elements of Russian mythology and I made a soothing cocktail for it. The book is whimsical and perfect for the winter, though it can drag at time, in my opinion.

A magical debut novel for readers of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, and Neil Gaiman’s myth-rich fantasies, The Bear and the Nightingale spins an irresistible spell as it announces the arrival of a singular talent with a gorgeous voice.

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

  • The Huntress

    The Huntress by Kate Quinn

The Huntress by Kate Quinn is $2.99! I’m a big fan of Quinn’s historical fiction with a dash of mystery and this is one of my favorites, though it’s been a few years since I read it. The main character has dreams of joining WWII’s Night Witches, a group of all-women Nazi-hunting pilots.

From the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel, THE ALICE NETWORK, comes another fascinating historical novel about a battle-haunted English journalist and a Russian female bomber pilot who join forces to track the Huntress, a Nazi war criminal gone to ground in America.

In the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted…

Bold and fearless, Nina Markova always dreamed of flying. When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, she risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment wreaking havoc on the invading Germans. When she is stranded behind enemy lines, Nina becomes the prey of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, and only Nina’s bravery and cunning will keep her alive.

Transformed by the horrors he witnessed from Omaha Beach to the Nuremberg Trials, British war correspondent Ian Graham has become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a vicious predator known as the Huntress. To find her, the fierce, disciplined investigator joins forces with the only witness to escape the Huntress alive: the brazen, cocksure Nina. But a shared secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.

Growing up in post-war Boston, seventeen-year-old Jordan McBride is determined to become a photographer. When her long-widowed father unexpectedly comes homes with a new fiancée, Jordan is thrilled. But there is something disconcerting about the soft-spoken German widow. Certain that danger is lurking, Jordan begins to delve into her new stepmother’s past—only to discover that there are mysteries buried deep in her family . . . secrets that may threaten all Jordan holds dear.

In this immersive, heart-wrenching story, Kate Quinn illuminates the consequences of war on individual lives, and the price we pay to seek justice and truth.

  • The Lion’s Den

The Lion’s Den by Katherine St. John

RECOMMENDED: The Lion’s Den by Katherine St. John is $2.99! Elyse wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A. Definitely check out her review for a list of triggers to be aware of.

This book is really two mysteries in one, and when they collide it’s a wonderful “ah-ha” moment. I wish I could say more than that, but I don’t want to ruin a single thing for another reader.

A dream vacation on a luxurious yacht turns deadly in this pulse-pounding beach read and perfect book club pick about glamour, friendship, romance, and betrayal on the Riviera.

Belle likes to think herself immune to the dizzying effects of fabulous wealth. But when her best friend, Summer, invites her on a glamorous girls’ getaway to the Mediterranean aboard her billionaire boyfriend’s yacht, the only sensible answer is yes. Belle hopes the trip will be a much-needed break from her stalled acting career and uniquely humiliating waitressing job, but once aboard the luxurious Lion’s Den, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems.

The dream vacation quickly devolves into a nightmare as Belle and the handful of other girlfriends Summer has invited are treated more like prisoners than guests by their controlling host, and Belle comes to see Summer for what she truly is: a vicious gold digger who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Belle soon realizes she’s going to have to keep her wits about her — and her own big secret close to her chest — if she wants to make it off the yacht alive.

  1. DonnaMarie says:

Nice selection of deals today. Loved the Lucy Palmer. Looking forward to the silent bodyguard’s story.

THE LION’S DEN was delightfully twisty. You spend a goodly amount of time yelling “JUST GET OFF THE BOAT!”

  2. Qualisign says:

I found BATTLE ROYAL better than expected based on the blurb. In fact, between the cover and the blurb, I’d never have picked it up, but Catherine’s review convinced it was worth reading. And it WAS. Once again SBTB comes through!

  3. Kareni says:

I see that His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novak is also one of today’s deals. It’s an enjoyable tale of the Napoleonic era that includes dragons.

  4. chacha1 says:

Ooh, I love it when something on my wishlist goes on sale. ‘Battle Royal’ is mine now. 🙂

  5. Bre says:

Lucy Parker is usually an autobuy for me. I’m not sure how this one slipped past. So happy to have it!

  6. Kareni says:

Oops! That ought to have been Naomi NOVIK.

@Kareni, I feel you. Parker, not Palmer.

  9. Varian Ross says:

The Lion’s Den looks fantastic, but the mere mention of a cruise ship has me going “nooooooooooo THERE’S COVID.”

  10. Deborah says:

$6.99 is my current price point for an ebook, so I was never going to buy Battle Royal at $10.99. However, I now need Lucy Parker to set up a tip jar so I can send her the other $5.

Treating myself to Battle Royal at great price was a wonderful way to start my Christmas week, and I choose to believe it was discounted now so more readers could experience the same joy, but when publishers sharply discount books so soon after release (BR is 4 months old), I have to admit it discourages me from paying the initial price on any books but my most anticipated reads or for indie authors whom I want to support. (As long as that initial price is < $6.99 ::grin::)

  11. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Deborah: Ditto. The same thing happened with Tessa Bailey’s IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER. When it was released in July, the ebook was $10.99. Too rich for my blood. It was on sale (a KDD, I believe) for $2.99 in November. I bought it and enjoyed it, but $10.99 for an ebook seemed waaaay too high for me. Now the book is back up to $10.99. I guess the moral of the story is, if a pricey ebook goes on sale, grab it while you can.

  12. EJ says:

The Alice Network and The Huntress provided two of the most pleasurable reading experiences I had last year. Historical, suspenseful, feminist awesomeness. Her protagonists are not generic “strong female characters.” The chapters from The Huntress featuring the adventures of the Night Witches are delightful. Seriously I can’t rave enough. I find most WWI and WWII fiction disappointing or worse, exploitative, but these books are exceptions.

The romances are kind of secondary to the suspenseful and ass-kicking aspects of the plots but definitely still important to the development of the stories.

  13. Nikki says:

Gah!!! Battle Royal sounds just like what I need right now, sadly here in Canada on Kindle and iBooks it’s $11.99. As a pastry chef myself I can assure you that is too rich for my blood . I’ll keep waiting for it. Also check library, not available.

  14. omphale says:

@Deborah Maybe split the difference and apply the mental 5 dollars to her next book?

I got Battle Royal from the library and immediately put it on my list for forever copy – lovely and funny and moving.

  15. Jenn says:

I am currently reading Battle Royal, and it is just what I needed. I found it at my library, and it seemed like the perfect fluffy book for my emotions right now. I am not a chick lit/contemporary fan generally, but if you are looking for a well written, fluffy, funny book — this one is a great choice.
